Non-smoker jailed for attacking deaf smoker - icWales

A NON-smoker was jailed for two years yesterday for attacking a “deaf and mute” man who refused to stub out a cigarette.

Robert Russo, 35, asked Glyn Robbins to stop smoking while they were waiting at a bus stop. But he didn’t realise Mr Robbins, 56, couldn’t hear him, and thought he was being rude.

Cardiff Crown Court heard Russo then punched him in the face and kneed him as he fell to the floor. CCTV footage was played to the court showing Russo kick Mr Robbins as he lay on the floor. A witness called police and Russo was arrested.

Russo, of Snowden Road, Ely, Cardiff, admitted wounding with intent and unlawful wounding.

He told police, “I told him to stop smoking and I thought he was going to have a go at me so I hit him.”

Mr Robbins was left bleeding from the nose and ear after the attack at Cardiff Central bus station.

Good, he will be in jail for two years. ...will teach him a lesson to respect deaf people more.

But that is still curious, doesn't deaf man know it's rude and sometimes even illegal to smoke in public area?

But still, hearing man shouldn't have reacted like that. *sigh*

Maybe in that area, it is not illegal? :dunno2:

I don't think smoking outside public places is illegal to smoke but it is illegal to throw ciggy butt on the ground if not put it out. I hate it when people smoke and leave cigg butts all over the ground look like trash.

Me too.

I am against smoking in public places. I am for smoking ban for all public places, even in casinos. What a terrible thing for deaf got attacked by non-smoker.

He's allow to smoke unless there was a sign that says smoking wasn't permitted.

This guy needs anger management classes. You can't go around beating people up when something doesn't go your way.

Poor deaf man who took the beaten out of nowhere, some people have to realized this world isn't full of hearings.

This reminds me of the dollar general store incident where a deaf man got clubbed by the clerk bec he though the man was being rude.

People are too quick to assume that they are being ignored. when in fact we can not hear. sheesh!

People like that have issues with themselves, if they feel that they have to go around beating up anyone that doesnt respond to them..

I don't mind smoking OUTSIDE. When you smoke inside, I consider that MURDER. Don't try to change my mind.

If this happened in America, Russo would have had his his pants sued the heck off!

Yep, I agree with you,, some hearing people think deaf are being rude to ingore you,, what don't some of us deaf wear a t-shirt says " I am not ingoring you, I am DEAF! got it? " maybe they get the message more clear before they beat a deaf person up. :cool2:

Well, it's no fun gagging on the smell of smoke while waiting for the bus. It's not right that I have to give up my spot so that I can stay back of where they smoke and pray that wind is not blowing in my direction.

That happens sometimes on college campus where I had to wait for a bus at bus stop. It's just plainly rude. I don't care if it's not illegal, I should have a right to breath air without it. What happens to people who are allergic to it? They have to sacrifice their spot because of people like those. Ugh.

I just think smoking at places that is filled with people should be illegal no matter what, outside or not. I am talking about places where people have no choice but to mingle with others like audience on the bench watching football, bus stop, waiting at the line at a movie theatre, and so on. Yup. *sigh*

So true, Babyblue. They continually use extreme measures to demand respect for themselves without having the ability to give respect to others. Very self centered and egocentric.
