No more mail delivered to homes?

We have these in my neighborhood. The two larger boxes are for packages or anything that does not fit in our mailbox. Mailman leaves a key in our box if we have a package in the bigger box.

What if there are more than two package customers on the same day?

How do they deliver mail to people with mobility problems? Do they deliver to a door slot or some other way?

Hey Reba, in my neighborhood these mailboxes are for every 12 houses. Six on one side of the street six on the other. So you don't have to go far. Most people walk to them. Our mail usually comes at the same time every day which is around 5pm. Our mailbox just happen to be at the end of our driveway. It's actually a nice meeting spot to chat with neighbors.

Reba, in our case if you are receiving more packages they will leave them on our porch. You can change that and have them stay at the post office and pick them up there. I have not had the mobility issue since my hubby gets the mail. We don't have mail slots in our doors here typically. I do remember way back in the day when they delivered mail to our front door. That was nice but I guess not very safe now a days since they were not locked.

My MIL has mobility issues so she gets her mail delivered to the door instead of at the end of the driveway where her mailbox is located.

My dad has been living for 20 years with the mailbox exactly like the picture. Never once had the mailbox broken into. That's what the keys are for.... besides many houses have the mailboxes by the curb... that's easily get stolen since they don't have a lock on them. I think the mailboxes on the pic I showed is pretty much safer and secure this way.

I bet a lot of them get broken into around holidays when people send checks and gift cards as gift. What happen when people want to send a packages at Christmas , are they just left on the ground for anyone to steal? This is horrible and I can tell anyone the work for the government will still be getting their mails brought right to their front door.

What are the two bigger boxes for?

Parcels, and large items that does not fit in the mailbox. My area don't have those, but my dad's does. My mailbox is next to the house next door... about 50 ft walk. Compared to my dad's several houses down.

How far do any of you have to go for the community and boxes? Do you walk or drive? How do you know what time the mail is in the box?

I am one of the farthest from the community box and it is still quite close - 3 houses down. I see neighbors that have trouble getting around simply pull up next to it and open it from their car - I do the same when it is stormy but usually take my dog along for the walk. The mailman usually shows up the same time so you get to know when to check.

I can get the mails from my car as the box is easily accessible just by the curb. But my dad's is not... it's far from the curb.

In my case, I can walk but not drive. My MIL can't really leave her house without help.

So, I'm wondering what do people do if they can't leave their houses? :dunno:

I just Googled this and there are quite a number of curbside mailboxes available for purchase that have a lock. They use a slot for delivery that must be big enough for priority envelopes without folding.

I guess they're all set up differently. The ones I've seen at apartment complexes are usually not on the roadside where anyone can drive up to them. They are set back away from the road, accessible by sidewalk only.

I think that is really a bad idea and someone posted they do not leave packages in the bigger boxes b/c they can get stolen.

Our mailbox is locked it requires a key to open it. If you have a package that the mailman placed in the larger "locked" mailbox, the key is placed in your mailbox which is locked. When you use that key to open the larger mailbox the key does not come out. It stays in the lock until the mailman removes it. I've lived here for over 20 years and have never had any mail or packages stolen.

I really don't see the problem?

There are many communities around here where I live where they already have these community mail boxes. It seems to work for most. (I can understand those who are not as mobile would have a hard time, but the article does say waivers can be obtained in those types of situations). My first home (as an adult) had a community mailbox. It was nice that it happened to be located on MY yard :) We are building a new home now and we will have the same thing (houses are too far apart, I think and that's why) so I will have to drive about 1 - 1 1/2 blocks to the mailbox.

Try it in an inner city...NOT

Read comment #12 , the OP said they do not use the bigger boxes for packages b/c it's not foolproof . I guess it would depend on where you live too.

I had my W2form put in the wrong mailbox in my condo and whoever got it by mistake open it and read it before putting it bin under the mailboxes . I had no idea who open it if I did
I would had reported them to the cops.

I've had postman put one envelope with wrong address in my mail. I go to the house to give the mail to. No one is perfect, but still the postman should have checked before putting in the box. Sorters sometime mix up the mail.

I have about $800 checks and a package that was worth $100 lost in the mail . The package was sent to me. The checks I send where all local and had a return address label on them . I was getting my next door neighbor mail in my box at least once a week and it was all magazines and that left little room for my mail. I no longer use the mail to pay my taxes , I drive to city hall , I did not like having to pay interest b/c my check was lost in the mail.

they are refering to ones like for apartments/condos... wont happen in the cities.

talking about one on ever corner for that actual block/neighborhood.
