sadly always public

i know how you feel. i wish i could have attended a school for the blind during my elementary grades and public school for the remainder of my education. my mother never thought to send me to a school for the blind, but once she saw the summer adult program they had at wsvh (wisconsin school for the visually handicapped), she fell in love with the school and told me how she wished she had sent me there during my childhood years.

I agree, I wish i had gone to TSB for elementary school, and mainstreamed for high school.

From what I have heard from some folks that went to blind schools, while you learn great braille and O&M skills, many blind schools only teach you the bare minimum and don't encourage students to excel. Another thing I have heard is that when going to a blind school, many blind/VI children don't learn how to socialize with sighted people, and how to constantly be around people to whom blindness is a novelty.

I'm not sure how accurate that is, but I think it's worth considering.

It maybe true, the reason i would have mainstreamed, is because i want my reading level higher than it would have been at TSB, but its better than going to elementary school, and knowing that you are different, and others shunning you all through your school career till college, and being afraid to socialize... then becoming an adult, and having to step out and meet people and biting your nails the whole way...

That's definitely true. I was bullied to death for it in elementary and middle school. Were you bullied a lot? (I'm hoping somehow your classmates were miraculously enlightened and you coasted through elementary and middle school.)

Kids were pretty mean. I would say more, but i would probably get banned from AD if i did... It was bad, I was scarred kind of, its why i dont have many sighted friends, i am scared...

Aw typeing that breaks my heart. Same here. I wish people weren't so narrow minded. <sad>

me too, *on the narrow minded part* I wish more people were better educated on how to treat people.

Couldn't agree more.

You mentioned you don't have many sighted friends. Where do you manage to find other blind/VI people? I seriously can't find them! Unfortunately we don't have a Blind/VI Club at my university. (Or even a more general Disability Awareness or similar type club.)

NFB email lists, and i went to the Louisianna center for the blind, and met a bunch of blind people and made several good friends. Hear again is a really good friend too!

Hear Again is definitely awesome! I just haven't met any other blind/VI folks in person. Would love to meet someone that shares that experience with me, someone who doesn't ask annoying questions like "so if you're blind, how do you know which way is up?"

Are most of your friends online or in person?

And of course you're awesome too, typeing. <smile> Didn't mean to exclude you.

I agree, mostly online...

Most of my friends are online. It's easier to weave out the narrow minded ones and to find truly well-intentioned, good-hearted people.

exactly. some people underestimate the power of an online friendship, but i think they're just as valuable as real life (i.e. in person) relationships.

i know what you mean about people always asking annoying questions. it's so nice to have people who truly understand what you are going through.

i've made all kinds of friends here on ad as well as the bipolar forum i participate on. it's wonderful having that kind of support!
