Emergency room doctors treating young people hooked on Flakka

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
There is a new drug on the streets and teens are the target. It's called Flakka and it's highly addictive. Emergency room doctors and first responders in South Florida say they're seeing an alarming rise in the number of young people getting hooked.

Kat, who wants to remain anonymous, talks about the drug that landed him here in detox.

"The people that normally smoke crack don't want crack . This is the new crack this is what's going to stop crack, says Kat".

He had uncontrollable shaking and cold sweats. But he knows this drug could have killed him.

Addictive and dangerous, on the streets, its called Flakka. It's smoked or vaped and is the newest evolution in bath salts. Even paramedics, who've seen it all, say this drug is scary. The calls come in as trouble breathing, chest pains and patients who seem mentally unstable.

Mathew Schaefer with Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue talks about patients on Flakka.

"Their words are incoherent their body language is just not really normal off the charts and not making sense with anything they are doing," says Schaefer.

Flakka comes from the Khat plant grown in East Africa and Arabia. The plant produces Cathinode an Amphetamine which gives patients an immediate high.

The drug is available over the internet and comes in from China chemists are constantly changing it's ingredients making it hard for law enforcement to prosecute dealers and even harder for doctors to treat its users.

Psychiatrist, Dr. Daniel Dober says Flakka is so dangerous because it's unpredictable.

"The real danger in Flakka is you don't know what you're really getting. There is no consistency, no reliability, and so you may get something that could be deadly," says Dober.

Dr. Dober points out your behavior can take a dangerous turn, fast.

"There's a lot of psychosis that goes with it. There's a lot of violence. They get a little aggressive with us the cops or with the hospital staff when we drop them off," says Dober.

Kat is trying to break his addiction to Flakka. It's not easy besides the shaking and sweating Kat is paralyzed with anxiety and has painful arthritis like effects in his joints. His message: don't try Flakka not even once.

"Its always going to be a temptation its going to ruin your life. Guaranteed I lost everything anybody could," says Kat.

Flakka is mostly used by young men and is hard for medical professionals to screen for because a urine test does not pick it up.

ban one thing and replaced quickly by something else...we got things called legal highs everytime gets banned they change ingredients

Yup, this is precise why I think government is wasting resources on so-called war on drugs, original objective was to reduce availability of drugs that started more than 40 years ago, now did that original objective have met? The answer is NOT at all, BUT actually worsen, plus more lethal as well.

I hope congress start to wake up and realize they are making matter worse everyday, and to stop that from getting worse? Simple, legalize weeds and start to relax some drug regulation. The damage is done, and it is getting harder to reverse the trend.

Don't get me wrong, one of my best friend passed away last week, all due to drug overdose, no idea if intended suicide or not but obviously overdosed. I remmy him complaining of pain and unable to get pain killer due to new regulations, thanks to new regulations that got him killed.

I am really to sorry to hear about your friend . I knew someone that OD and no one if this was an accident or suicide . This was years ago , I agree weed should be legalize , I saw on the news there are talks about doing this in my state , Massachusetts. We have a heron problem I think over 200 people dies from this so far this year.

I believe that rise on heroin death has to do with tighter painkiller prescription regulation. Its getting real harder to get painkiller refill since two years. The more restriction, the more people would attempt dealing on their own with black market that don't give a damn about one's life.

In order to get pain killer, one has to see doctor every time they need refill, which I think is ridiculous, and one that gets rx for pain killer must inform doctor where they will get them filled, if filled at wrong pharmacy, its ground for termination, and will rise red flag. If contact different doctor, its red flag and patient will be barred from getting them refill. Very restrictive procedures that really encourage one's making bad decision, and that often could lead to fatal.

Remember the convo I had w/a drug addict (for 25 years)...in and out of rehab...and the last time in the effort to get clean, lasted 3 months....that person told me..."You know? I thought getting clean and staying straight would be a wonderful feeling....but its not...."

All I could respond was..."it takes time"....and "hang in there, it will get better"...MY guessing too...drug addicts cannot face reality and everyday living without something to take them into another world. Have to let them go!

so why not see the same doctor and go to same pharmacy?

why do you think seeing a doctor for every time if you need a refill is ridiculous? you know very well that painkiller med is very addictive and often abused. I think it is a right step to prevent a patient from getting addicted to painkiller med. I'm sorry if you felt inconvenienced but the fact remains that before the regulation got tighten up... too many patients were abusing it and selling it.

so what are you proposing what should we do about flakka?

There will always be a new and more lethal drug coming out.

'spose I am out of town. That is where I ran into problems.

Secondly, there are many patients that don't have car, friend of mine who passed away recently happens to be one of them. Not easy for them to stick with one place every time. Some patients were forcing to relocate, and try to refill makes it taunting for them, which sometimes end up having them resort to black market that offers zero hassles. There's more that you don't know at all.

And its right direction in order to encourage them figuring out other way around, and often its much more lethal than whats to begin with. Its endless!

Very simple, don't criminalize addicts. They need help, not punishment.

Which would better help addicts, though legal market or black market? Think about it, there will always be black market, and do these owners of black markets care?

:hmm:...They need help, not punishment?....We spend millions of $$ for rehab and halfway houses for addicts that simply don't want to give up their "happy pills"...they either go to the ER complaining of all sorts of pains to get pain killers...even faking a bad toothache to get them....They will even steal them from their parents/friends/older grandparents, etc. (it's happened to me)....
Doctors do prescribe pain management, as mine did with all the Ear(s) surgeries I've had and I do just fine, knowing that I do not and will not get hooked on pain killers....Too many people just pop a pill for any ache and pain they have....

Don't forget one of my best friend was overdosed and died from it, all due to court order mandates. I discovered last week about it and realize the real problem.

Why are we suggesting feeding black markets? Aren't you forgetting the black markets? Secondly, have you ever wondering why we (USA) have world's largest prison business on this planet? Don't you realize that prison is in reality as a university for criminals, and throwing addicts there only to have them recruits for black market owners and enhance their criminal skills? Anytime when prisoners throws in prison, the rest knows that person and gain trust knowing they aren't part of 5-0.

Lastly, lately, government have cut down on mental health care programs, whats up with that?

There is more that many don't know exists, and lastly criminals always at least steps ahead of laws.
