I want to reassure you that under new policy which lifts the 18-years ban, the families of the fallen do reserve the rights to allow media coverage or not. The government has no say in this matter.... the families do.

Not really. "Mainstream media" is a vocabulary coined during the 1990s when large corporates started buying out newspapers, radios, TV shows and so on. SO basically, everything you see is controlled by the owners of those corporates.

Everything you see on Fox, ITV, Sky and so on is controlled by News Corporations.

It's not a tongue-in-cheek joke. It's a perception that a certain viewpoint dominated the markets.

Conservatives call liberal newsources MSM; liberals call conservative newsources MSM.

Right now, there's a few people saying that the MSM is conservative due to all the criticism of Obama.

You don't really get it. This is a term used for years by conservatives. It's a tongue-in-cheek thing. A stab at a particular group, so to speak.
