I haven't found anything in this thread to be mocking of any kind of mental health issue....with any disability people can be "mocked" by the ignorant or people who just don't care....cruel jibes and sick jokes are the usual ways. I have learned a lot from the stuff I have read on here. It's just a discussion and I'm sure no one would wish to offend anyone. People who are deaf/blind/ill/black, whatever are always the butt of inappropriate comments...we just dont get peeved about it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and if it doesn't suit what you expected....rise above it :nana:

sorry for getting involed in a bit of a do...but i came on AD to smile and learn

I didn't vote, as the question requires that a diagnosis be made by a layperson. Making a diagnosis is a complicated procedure, and should not be undertaken by anyone who is not qualified.

I was a psychology major undergraduate, and am completing my master's degree in psychology at this point. Once I have completed my master's (2 more quarters) I will be qualified to do clinical counseling and make such a diagnosis.

MPD, or dissociative disorder as it is known clinically, is an extremely rare disorder, and the criteria for diagnosing is very stringent. Very few practicing psychologist or psychiatrists will actually treat a case of dissociative disorder during the entire time they are practicing, the reason being is that it is so very rare. If the professionals spend their entire careers without ever seeing an individual with this disorder, then I doubt that we as lay people have ever seen one, much less have the knowledge to correctly diagnose it.

No opinion is right or wrong.
the definition of opinion= * A personal belief or judgment that is not founded on proof or certainty
* A belief or sentiment shared by most people; the voice of the people
* A message expressing a belief about something; the expression of a belief that is held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof
* A vague idea in which some confidence is placed

So ladies and gentlemen, could we carry on learning?? The more info we learn about MPD/DID, the less they will be mocked.

boy this thread is getting really technical....I'm blonde so bear with me :giggle: ...i have to say that everyone has multiple personalities to some degree....i readily admit to it....I am one person at work (professional and non personal, and fight my corner (the only time I do)...private life is my own, etc) and can honestly say that no one i work with knows the real me. I have a "friends" personality...the daft me, who might get on the tables for a boogie and drink till i drop. Then there is the "family" me....I behave, don't burp out loud/break wind or guzzle vast quantities of lager. Finally there is the "romantic, I'm with the love of my life" me, where I am soft and snuggly, etc........I'm sure everyone has different personalities which we use for different situations.

So true. But those are not separate personalities, nor do you dissociate from your host personality in the expression of such. They are merely different facets to your personality, and are integrated as such. You choose when and how to express the facets, and it is actually a sign of mental health to do so.

DID involves a total lack of integration and the host personality experiences only an amnesia during the time when the alternate is in control. It is not in control of the host personality, but happens spontaneously due to a reaction to a stimulus that invokes a feeling of helplesssness in the host.

I remembered that one of my co-workers from Rutgers Univerisity (NJ)Neuroscience Dept told me that she did a research on a deaf person who has several personalities and one of the personalities is being a hearing person. Can hear and speaks clearly as a hearing person. I still struggle to believe it. I mean, how is that possible?? I would understand IF the person is hearing but by choice the person thinks and acts like deaf all its life. But my co-worker said the person is DEAF. I still don't get it.

I haven't heard of that case, but there is a very famous case in Ohio that was researched at Ohio University in Athens. As amatter of fact, one of the professors wrote a book about this case called "The Mids of Billy Milligan". Very interesting. He was hearing, but one of his personalities was a deaf child.

thanks for that jilio...you have a balanced and easy to understand way of talking!

hey me not squabbling...I too new to squabble :eek3:

If you don't like what you are reading of this topic what it is being discussed about then don't bother to come back this thread, plain and simple.

Unfortunately, I'm going to pull this topic back on.. I do have a few questions about multiple personalities, when someone has it is that almost like when Satan spirit comes within them that they have no control or power to get rid of that spirit, Isn't that almost the same meaning? I just wanted to understand certain circumstances if they have no control of how they feel the way they feel, their behaviors, thoughts, and emotions. Is it like a switch on and off? Is all this only temporary or do they have to carry this disease for life?

And for those suffering from multiple personality disorder are they allow to have children in the same house with them or do they need to be under watch?

I know someone who has it cuz she told me herself abt what happened to her and I did not even know it! I was kind of shocked but now she seem to be doing better after I left from other state and I am not sure right now tho cuz I have not seen nor heard from them for a long time... she has a husband who work at college happened to be my couslor! For reason was that she has bad past expreinces with abused by her parents...been like that for a long time... but now I hope she has a happy life with no more of Multiple Personalities but then I have no idea if any cure for it!!! I have heard a lot abt it and I do belive that might happened to anyone who do not know it! I feel bad for what happened to her cuz of her abuse parents!

This JLFWildKat here was just wonder abt it and how to help them, that was all... I would the same thing too if I ask anyone on how to help .... so I agree that it was okay to ask some questions abt it and it was not that asking if anyone has it and how that happened, no way... it was simple to ask ON HOW TO HELP PPL WHO HAS IT... that all... I hope that what JLFWildKat means to say that, eh? Pls correction me if I am wrong... thanks!

No, I do not consider multiple personality Disorder as a satan spirits but psyohotic disorder. A person who suffer from mental disturbance due their bad experience of childhood trauma.

I just wanted to understand certain circumstances if they have no control of how they feel the way they feel, their behaviors, thoughts, and emotions. Is it like a switch on and off?

Yes.

Is all this only temporary or do they have to carry this disease for life?

Disease? I would say disorder.

It will not stay for life only if you get a professional help. It's good if you want the help then it will cure... See link in my previous post.

[/QUOTE]

Unfortunlately, it would create unhealthy relationship including family if you refuse to get professional help. To me, I suggest them to get the help first until they are cure then... because it's unfair for the children to watch their parent like this.

I would consider them as selfish if they refused to get the help and continue to start family which unfair for the children to watch unhealth atmosphere.

For your information, I'm not an Expert but I study physocolgy for years and understand where they come from ... how to help them... I collect alot of tips from parental conferences....

If anyone who correct me is welcome... because I like to learn more and more... It's my interesting task.

Yes exactly... That's what I said the same thing but my post was being removed.

We'd like to learn where they come from and how to help them..., not mocking what some think.

Oh yes, some threads about health issues, I saw where it affect me but I do not take it serious because I know they like to know and wonder where it come from... which is good for them to learn where we come from... example about thyriod, etc. I'm not shame to admit that I have thyriod gland.... I did said this in some threads about my health...

That is not what I meant, You have misunderstood my post, I said is it "almost like"? Which means that when a evil spirit comes inside a human being, that person been possessed by a demon have no way exiting it out of that person's body unless it's from a ritual performed by a priest Right? So that's what I meant about someone with multiple personality when someone has it, there's no way of getting rid of what this person has unless that person is on treatment to help control or fight the multiple personality that they have, Am I correct? ;)

Thanks AngelWolf. Few people think that I created this thread for kayos & to make fun of people with this problem. But their wrong. I know how much of a sensitive subject this is to allot of people. For people that has participated in here, even started posting other subjects related to other mental health issues. & I don't have a problem with that because it's turned out to be more then what I asked for.

Regardless what the issue is, I also didn't create this thread for showing off, to look great, &/or WTF-ever people might think. I'm no different then anyone else. I know people with any type of mental health issues can do anything that other people w/out mental health issues can do. I believe in them, I encourage them. Nothing wrong with that.

Cheri- It's sort of like possession I guess, in that the host personality (true personality) can't control when the other personalitites take control and come out. But it is unlike possession in that the host personality never remembers what the other personality did or said. It's like a block of missing time. The only way they ever know what happened while the other personality was in control is if another person tells them what happened. When someone seeks treatment for a diagnosis of DID, they usually tell the doctor only that they are having periods of amnesia. Only after therapy has continued for a while does the doctor even realize exactly what is happening. The patient can't say, "I have Multiple Personality Disorder" because he/she is completely unaware of the other personalities inside.

Thank-you for having the time to answer my question, that sure does answers my question. ;) Thanks so much!

omg thats terrible!! Did anyone ever know the reason why??

Of course it was wrong for her to even pretend to be deaf. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone doing something like that. Certainly someone could have known & figured out she wasn't deaf:dunno:
