Most dangerous metro areas in the US

This is true although my experiences in Detroit have been mixed. Once I had a homeless person follow me while I was being trained with my first guide dog. He wouldn't leave us alone, so my trainer had to call the police.

In Milwaukee, the north and south side are the part of the city you want to avoid. The east side, northwest side and southwest side are the safest in terms of crime level. One of the interesting things about Milwaukee is that it is surrounded by a number of suburban communities. One of them is located minutes from downtown while others are 20 minutes or more away. I happen to live in the suburbs, but if I had to live on the Eastside of Milwaukee, I wouldn't complain. The university I attend is in that neighborhood and it's a wonderful area of culture and diversity. The only complaint I would have is the extremely high rent. Rent starts at $800/month and can go as high as $1000/month or more.

I feel the same..I live in Baltimore but never had any problems in the 10 years I have lived here but my 19 year old brother who drove from Phx was a victim of armed robbery on his first day here. Go figure!

The average rent here in MD is $1200 and up or so the last time I checked. EXPENSIVE to live in this state!

I'm sorry about what happened to your brother. :(

It's strange how that works out, isn't it? :hmm:

You're right about how expensive MD is. When I thought about attending Gallaudet, I was shocked at how expensive it was to live on the East Coast.

Speaking of expensive, I would *love* to live in California. Unfortunately, I can't afford the rent, so that will never happen until I find a good job.

I posted about the drama with my brother and many here on AD were so fascinated with it!

Yea, I felt the same when I moved from AZ to MD..I was like :jaw:

I moved cuz I thought I would only live here for 2 years and then return...well, it has been 10 years and I am still here in MD. LOL!

As you know shel, I visited Tucson and found several neighborhoods that were very affordable in terms of rent yet were also safe. I heard from a friend who lives there that the neighborhood I'm thinking about moving to has a similar crime level to the suburb I live in now (i.e. it's very low). At the moment, I'm debating between living in downtown Phoenix, Tucson (in the outlying areas) or Tempe.

*chuckles* When I saw it and I was like I bet first number is Detroit, Michigan. so Im right, just know that Detroit will be ALWAYS dangerous metro area in the US in everybody's eyes. *shrug*

I think Tempe is expensive cuz of Arizona State University and Mill Ave...I lived there.

I dont know about downtown Phx...during the time I left, there were several projects in the works for building condos and lofts there. If those projects were completed, I can imagine they would be costly. It has been so long and so much has changed there, from what I learned.

Detroit has had a bad reputation since the 50s and 60s when most of the white population moved to the suburbs (i.e. "white flight").

The same can be said of Milwaukee. Back in the 60s and 70s, Milwaukee enjoyed a dramatic population increase that eventually dropped during the 80s and 90s. The city is now starting to experience more development in terms of expensive condos and highrises, so things are slowly turning around.

These statistics are misleading, regardless which city you are at, it all depends on where you're standing (ie east side, north side, central, etc.) - of course there is the miniscule odds of getting into trouble, especially in the safest city. I have been to Detroit with no problems what-so-ever, though I disliked Portland OR for it's rude people, though I don't blame Portland as a whole, just a case of "wrong place, wrong time" coincidence. My city Charlotte NC is on the list, and I STILL love it!

They are just count in total in entire of metro area.

I have a friend who lives in downtown Phoenix. He told me that the rent there is more affordable than it is outside of the city.

As far as Tempe is concerned, expense is the reason why it's last on my list.

At the moment, the order of cities where I wish to live are as follows:

1. Tucson
2. Phoenix
3. Tempe

I'd also love to live in Scottsdale, but that won't happen anytime soon either. :giggle:

Same with Chicago in 60's and 70's, they are used to be 2nd largest city but lost to Los Angeles in 1980's and most white left to suburb.

It had been rebound in 90's but not much.

That's true. From what I understand (although I could be wrong so someone please correct me if I am), most Chicago residents grew up in or around Chicago. The same is true for Milwaukee with the exception of the 60s and 70s.

I already know about detroit has had a bad reputation since the 50s and 60s... Because my grandma born in there, it was GREAT city until she married a guy and moved to califorina and lived there for awhile, having four kids(my mama is the last baby) until my mama is around 4 years old, they decided to move back to Michigan due to job. Then they was planning to live in Detroit but too dangerous. My grandma told me all and everything about Detroit and etc like that.

I'm surprise St. Louis didn't make in that list as that city is know as the highest crime rate. Hmm..

A few days ago I was with a friend whose car broke down in East St. Louis. It was midafternoon but we were still nervous, since we were in the hood. Man, I will NEVER go back there!
