This is the second "stray" that showed up in my yard this week.
A few days ago, a large, elderly, chocolate Lab showed up in my front yard while I was gardening. He wouldn't let me get close enough to check his collar for a tag. I didn't recognized him from the neighborhood.
He strolled into my back yard, so I quietly followed, and then closed the gate behind me. He didn't try to get out. Instead, he drank water out of my lower bird bath, and rolled around under the spray from my water sprinkler. He was soaked!
I could see that there was no tag on his collar, so I didn't know who to call. I took a piece of plywood, and used a Sharpie to make a sign, "found dog". I propped it up against my mailbox out front. I hoped if someone was driving around, looking for their dog, they would see the sign.
My mail lady stopped at the box, and gave me my mail. She said that some people in a subdivision a few miles away were searching for a dog that fit the description. She couldn't remember their name, just the address. So I went in and did a reverse look up on the computer to get their phone number. By then, Hubby was home, so he called the number, and gave the people directions to our house. The lady came by and picked up her dog. We were all shocked how the dog walked so many miles across the busy traffic, and into our yard.
If the bunny shows up again I might be able to catch him, and then try to find the owner. I have a humane trap that I can bait and catch him, without harm. It's just a cage with a trap door; they can get in but they can't get out. I use it sometimes for relocating squirrels. In the past, I've also caught raccoons and possums in my yard (I let them go; I wasn't trying to catch them; they just got curious).
I hope we can catch him before a dog or car gets him.
