Loss of Culture?

Hear Again,
I know that there are Deaf schools with mostly severely/multi disabled kids, however it's a pretty well known fact that the Deaf population tends to be more likely then other disabled populations to be educated in non mainstream settings. It also means that even at Deaf schools where there are majority multiple/severely handicapped kids, there tends to be a significent subpopulation of "just dhh kids."
Whereas at a School for the Blind, there might be less then ten "just blind/low vision" kids. (especially in the upper grades, since intially some just blind kids might go to the Blind School for preschool/EI/kindergarten.

why people equate blindness with mental and cognitive disabilities is beyond me.
No freakin' idear............but we dhh also get that shit too......I got lumped in with the "Ummm who's President Bush/Clinton dumbasses who overpopulated the Resource Room. I also can't tell you how many people thought I'm MR b/c of my deaf voice.

lumping us in those schools is also a 'very reason' why deaf culture continues, it is the breeding ground.....

the same holds true for the blind. i was born totally blind yet i was raised in a mainstream environment and never attended a school for the blind. my suburb had a resource room for the blind at a local catholic school, but my parents couldn't find a way to transport me there. it seems that the deaf have it easier in some ways because they get the best of both worlds. many of them are educated in a mainstream setting using a terp while many of them are also educated at a school for the deaf. some even attend a school for the deaf and a public school. for those of us who are blind, many of us are thrown into a mainstream setting where we are forced to rely on our poor residual vision, do not receive adequate o&m instruction or are taught braille. having said that, i also believe the incidence of more blind people with multiple disabilities attending schools for the blind has more to do with the cormobidity of other conditions that commonly co-exist with blindness.

hence another reason why deaf culture won't come to an end as long as schools for the deaf are not closed.

With all of the technology and all that may be just over the horizon, how will this affect Deaf culture. If hearing loss or deafness is "cured" will culture be lost? Is there a way to keep Deaf culture and use all of the technology that could become available? What are people's thoughts on the new technology and what the effects are? Any thoughts would be great!

Thanks!

i would say, there would be a leftover people who are stubborn to keep the deaf culture running on but that would be smaller than years ago.

I just hope that some of us who reallly care about deaf cultures and its our chance to keep this deaf culture continues to be alive and carry it to pass to our next "deafies" generation no matter how hard it is. some of us already have deaf culture in us. well, i know the more, deaf parents have deaf kids who receives CIs and do care about the deaf culture too and teaching them to keep deaf culture somehow.

i admit that i do miss the old time but i am always going for the better change though. can't win both.

Yeah I know. My best friend is low vision/hoh, and he was mainstreamed to the max until middle school when he went to Perkins.
I honestly think that virtually ALL dhh and blind/low vision kids really need to attend schools for their disabilty and then transistion to the mainstream.
We are being underserved by teachers and professionals who don't have the abilty or skills to teach kids like us.

i agree wholeheartedly. if i ever have a d/hh or blind/vi child, they will be enrolled in a school for the deaf and/or blind for their first 2 years and then placed in a private school setting where they can be mainstreamed.

Hear Again, don't you mean for preschool and kindergarten? Preschool usually lasts more then one year for kids with disabilites.

i would enroll my child in preschool for their first 1 or 2 years and then a school for the deaf and/or blind for kindergarten and first grade. from 2nd grade on, they would attend a private mainstreamed program.

at the time of my last posting, i was only referring to kindergarten and 1st grade and forgot to mention preschool.

If I had a deaf child I would keep them in a signing deaf school for the whole of their education.

If I had a blind or partially sighted child they would be placed in a Blind elementary school. Then I'd leave it up to them to make the choice weteher they wanted to continue with their blind school or go to a mainstream high school.

Sometimes I am loss culture deaf important to commuity to town. I want to teach to skills to people. I give you help you support to be peaceful.
