why people equate blindness with mental and congnitive disabilities is beyond me.
I dont know but it ticks me off to no end. Ohh, talk about strike a nerve...
why people equate blindness with mental and congnitive disabilities is beyond me.
No freakin' idear............but we dhh also get that shit too......I got lumped in with the "Ummm who's President Bush/Clinton dumbasses who overpopulated the Resource Room. I also can't tell you how many people thought I'm MR b/c of my deaf voice.why people equate blindness with mental and cognitive disabilities is beyond me.
Hear Again,
I know that there are Deaf schools with mostly severely/multi disabled kids, however it's a pretty well known fact that the Deaf population tends to be more likely then other disabled populations to be educated in non mainstream settings. It also means that even at Deaf schools where there are majority multiple/severely handicapped kids, there tends to be a significent subpopulation of "just dhh kids."
Whereas at a School for the Blind, there might be less then ten "just blind/low vision" kids. (especially in the upper grades, since intially some just blind kids might go to the Blind School for preschool/EI/kindergarten.
lumping us in those schools is also a 'very reason' why deaf culture continues, it is the breeding ground.....
With all of the technology and all that may be just over the horizon, how will this affect Deaf culture. If hearing loss or deafness is "cured" will culture be lost? Is there a way to keep Deaf culture and use all of the technology that could become available? What are people's thoughts on the new technology and what the effects are? Any thoughts would be great!
Thanks!
Yeah I know. My best friend is low vision/hoh, and he was mainstreamed to the max until middle school when he went to Perkins.for those of us who are blind, many of us are thrown into a mainstream setting where we are forced to rely on our poor residual vision, do not receive adequate o&m instruction or are taught braille.

I honestly think that virtually ALL dhh and blind/low vision kids really need to attend schools for their disabilty and then transistion to the mainstream.
We are being underserved by teachers and professionals who don't have the abilty or skills to teach kids like us.
Hear Again, don't you mean for preschool and kindergarten? Preschool usually lasts more then one year for kids with disabilites.
