Listening And Hearing, Not The Same For Children With CI

The fine points of that difference were not coming across in the comments to her.

Then, maybe you can clear that up instead of accusing us of something we are not. That's how the fights get started. It has started with other members who came across as anti-Deaf (my assumption only). It gets old.

If I was against CIs, I wouldnt be freinds with people like Deafskeptic, for one. It is the views that having hearing is superior that we are against.

Yes, I think it was necessary. Can't tell the players without a scorecard. When willsmom is getting hit with snarky posts right off the bat about her decision to use CIs for her son, it's only fair that she have a little background to put those remarks in context.

What does my hearing status have to do with anything? I still have more experience and knowledge regarding prelingually deaf children than an HOH late deafened person with no contact with deaf children ever.:dunno2:

Nor was my comment "snarky". Will'smom has already verified that she did not feel she was being attacked. Perhaps you are simply too quick to judge that which you do not understand and defend those that don't need your defense.:cool2:

What you really need to do is read the literature on CI and what can be expected.

Then you need to get out a lot with deaf people and meet people with CI.

It is really a mixed bag what can happen. I know people my kids age who have them for whom they do not work at all. And I have met a late deafened woman who had one, who seemed quite horrified to meet an old pre lingual deaf person.

And then there are young kids for whom they work great. And also some they really don't work .

It's important to know what you are talking about and not just react emotionally.

I have a late-deafened friend who had 2 CI failures. I felt so bad for her because she wanted it to work so badly. It was important for her because her husband won't learn ASL.

It is sad when people want something so badly and it just doesn't work out. I guess that is just more of a reason why parents need to have very conservative expectations.

Family members can be such selfish twits sometimes.

Thanks, DS. It was my own ignorance and denial that led to disappointment. I'm over that now.

Beach girl, just putting some general info out there. That happened to me and it sucked. lol

A side note: You can measure your own distance for centering and order glasses online cheap. Bott has some great glasses she ordered online. I need progressive lenses now so I don't order as many.

Somehow, I don't think I could order mine online that easily. I wear bi-focals and need tri-focals. My right eye is almost blind and my left is halfway there according to the last doc. It's these "extra" pupils. I guess for some reason, the man upstairs decided I needed more than one in each eye. 4 in the right eye and 2 in the left eye.

Goodness! I've never heard of that before. That would make ordering glasses difficult, to be sure.

Happened to me once too, actually, from LensCrafters or one of those places at a mall. The left lens was very clearly off and the woman said "Oh, you just have to get used to them.

I said "I've worn glasses for 30 years and I know these are off. They need to be fixed."

She fussed but I demanded to see the opthamologist again. He looked at the lens and realized the prescription was right, but they had been cut and put in the glasses at the wrong angle. He agreed they needed to be re-made, it was taken care of, and all was well.

I know you can order on-line; I've never tried it, though. Just ordered a new pair last week from the eye doctor here in the OBX.

Related note: has anyone had good experience ordering hearing aids on-line? There are a couple places that seem to offer lower prices, but how would you figure out what you need?

My first pair of bi-focals were made incorrectly and I was told I didn't know how to wear glasses. They put the distance part in the reading area. They also put the lens for the right eye in the left placement. I argued and argued and was escorted out by a security guard. I took all the papers to a branch location, and they fixed them free of charge. Never went back after that.

I know. :(

I fee bad for your friend too.

Isn't that the stupidest thing.

That's one reason why I'm leery of getting glasses on-line. If I order from my own optometrist, he won't let me walk away unhappy with them. And I've never had a problem ordering right from the professional's office. The only time I had a problem was that mall outfit (and I'm not positive it was Lenscrafters; it was one of those ubiquitous places you find everywhere, though.)

My eye exam last week was a different doc than my current glasses are from, and he said my left lens (in the glasses) was a bit too strong. Huh. Don't know if my eyes are getting better (seems unlikely!) or the previous doc made a bit of a mistake. Anyway, new glasses on the way. I'm also ordering prescription swim goggles, too. That will be a first for me.

Sometimes I want to throttle certain family members.

So do I, but it's got nothing to do with hearing. It's only when they've pulled something off the counter that they shouldn't have.

Wait - dogs ARE family members, aren't they??
