oh no, sorry about your dog! I've been relieved that in the years we've lived here we haven't yet had a skunk encounter in the yard, considering that we've had possums and coons, and we had a deer in the neighbor's yard couple of years ago. We live in the city on a cul de sac and we are the biggest yard on a pie-shaped lot which is separated from the other surrounding lots and homes by a full chain link fence. Directly behind us is the yard where the deer came into. She lay there chewing on the various plantings those people have <they are really into gardening, beds, birdhouses etc> for several hours and those peoples' neighbors actually came over and took pictures of the deer in the yard.
Have also seen coyotes several times now, including the one we had in different neighbor's yard <a "side" neighbor right next to us; ironically, the one who hates dogs> several months ago. THAT caused quite a commotion on my end with my adult Rott and scared the crap out of the baby<puppy>.

When my Lab was here, he captured and killed raccoons, possums, birds, squirrels, mice....so am VERY glad we never had skunks in the yard.

I know there are many products for getting rid of skunk odor in dogs - no luck with them?

Nothing gets rid of skunk stink for well - nothing at all.

And our dog was lucky enough he got it just on the side of his face only,
and luckily not in his eyes as it can be quite dangerous for the sight.

We didn't try the tomato juice as I never had one at hand but I did tried a few products from an organic one to chemical one from the pet store,
a baking soda, vinegar mixtures recommended from Google
and what not, and they all only slightly removed the smell.

It stinks to high heavens for good three months, better only when the fur is dry slowly dimnishing but oh so slowly!,

yet stinking badly anew when it's wet.
So when it was raining outside - gaahhh! we had to blow dry his face or I immediately got bad migraine :(

'orrible, 'orrible experience.

From now on, we never ever let the dog out in the back yard without first sniffing the air for a while lolol

Skunk Wash Formula

1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide

1/2 cup of Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)

1 teaspoon of liquid soap

Mix together to make a shampoo for your furry pal.

Rinse well to remove the shampoo from the fur after vigorously shampooing.

You may need to double or triple this recipe depending on the weight of your dog.

Note: Just be careful with your dog's eyes when you wash the fur.

I had the same problem with my dog. After I washed my dog once, the smell goes away about 90 percent which is better than nothing. I think I washed it again the next day, it smelled much better like 95 percent. It takes about two weeks to go away completely.

@ Audiofuzzy, Yeah, we should not let our dogs out at night if something funny smell somewhere.

we could move - or ask mod's to move - the "training debate" to it's own section-

I like the idea of a fence but what about rabbits digging....am wondering if there are plants naturally repellant to rabbits that would reduce the chances of them coming in. I honestly don't know much about eating habits of wild rabbits beyond they "like plants".
If that and a fence would be useful?

BG, the 3 yr. vaccine is much more common but some states still require the 1 yr. and many times traditional vets will automatically re-vaccinate during the routine Spring exam, unless the client questions them or asks them not to.

I thought having a coyote coming through my yard all the time would keep the rabbits away! The coyote been marking it territory around my condo! I can smell it urine, it smell a lot stronger than a dog! Marty does not want to go outside some time! He refused to go out the front door one night, and I did not take him out. I thought he knew better than me that something was out there!

Really! tell us about it :)

Fuzzy

I was outside at night with Marty and he was stiffing around the brushes and I saw eyes set in a black and white face looking right at me and the skunk had it tail up in the air ! The skunk was cornered and it was warning Marty and me to back off! This almost happen with my last dog Finlay, he walked right up a skunk that I did not see as it dark as the skunk was hiding in pile of trash bags! I was right on next to the skunk! I read that skunks do not like to spray unless they really have to. I am careful now when I take Marty out at night, I stay away from the brushes ! I did not know Fuzzy was able to see me in my back yard at night!! ! I wonder if she can see Russia from her home too!

Oh wow! Hmm, I wonder that a high pitch sound remote device might help us to make all skunks to go away from us at nights before we go out walking in the backyard. I realized that I have the remote somewhere, but I forgot where I put it away. There are a few different devices that sell on the internet and some stores. Here is example: http://www.kiienterprises.com/dazer.html

That would scare Marty too! I just have to remember to not let Marty stiff around the brushes at night. I can see the skunk if they are on the lawn but when they're in the brushes I have no idea they're so close to me as I can't hear them. My ex husband once heard something growling in the brushes and when to see what it was! I told him not to , and it was a skunk! Marty loves to hunt are the yard at night! He saw some wild turkeys for the first time and he was speechless at first! He stood on his hind legs to get a better look then sat down looking at the turkeys for a minute before he found his voice and started to bark! He had never seen a bird bigger than him before!

Some people bring their dog to the groomer after their dogs get sprayed by a skunk. I have been very lucky so far and none of my dogs got sprayed. I did not a dog roll in a dead fish head and OMG I thought I was going dies driving home with my dog smelling like a dead fish! My Samoyed rolled in donkey shit and came home very pleases with herself! I was living in the Northern Calf. and we had to haul your water to the house!

My dog never rolled in the dead fish, but my friend's dog have,
and yikes this is some rotten smell, too!!
:-o

much easier to remove than a skunk, though, whew..

yeah, same thing for my two dogs. Oh boy. They love to smell the dead fish or bird because they think that it was their perfume. It's true. What a mystery.

This has to with hunting , when dogs where wild they covered up their scene so the animals they where hunting would not smell them. I read if you put a little perfume on a dog chin it will keep them from rolling in dead animals. I never tried this. I thought I was going vomit when I had to drive home with my dog smelling like a dead fish!! It was horrible! She got a bath right away!
