Law & Order: Criminal Intent TV show, April 3rd NBC channel

So, was that detective a certified RID or NAD interpreter?
Don't know; they didn't say. I'm not sure they even said he was a detective. I'll have to play back the tape and check on that.

And, which code of ethics did he violate?
I didn't say he violated any codes. I just linked them so you could see what they are.

I know, I was just asking if that happened.

StarrNancy said that the police didn't follow proper interpreter request protocol.

I was wondering if a formal request was ever made.

OK. :)

I was wondering if a formal request was ever made.
The only "request" I recall is when Larry requested (demanded?) a Deaf cop, Deaf jury, and Deaf judge (he already had a Deaf lawyer). He didn't want to use any interpreter but the police provided the interpreter anyway.

The CI debate isn't really old, it's still argued today. I see it argued a lot with deaf students at NTID.

I meant the storyline seemed like the same thing over and over. I did not mean that it was "old" as in not current.

I don't know what would have been a good storyline, but it just seemed the writers of the show didn't think of something more innovative than the usual debate about cochlear implants and how the deaf community is like a "cocoon."

Another thing I wondered about was the lawyer for Larry deaf? Reba mentioned the lawyer was deaf, but when Larry was being interrogated I didn't see the lawyer using sign language, only saw him speaking.

Well, when he refused... they still had to try their best considering Larry wouldn't cooperate.

I don't remember the lawyer speaking. (I'm not saying he didn't; I just don't remember; I need to replay my tape). I did see him signing with Larry, and knowing Larry's attitude about hearing cops and juries, etc., a Deaf lawyer would fit his requirements. But it's possible the lawyer was a hearing signer, or a late-deafened oral signer, or . . . who knows?

With all of those "they must be deaf" request that Larry made, would you say he was suffering from deaf psychosis? ;)

Re-run episode: "Silencer"

April 11, 2007
11 P.M.
USA Network

11pm in Eastern Time zone?

last time someone e-mail me that make me think it's 9pm and realize it's actual 8pm. That make me miss that. damnitgod.

If the police dept knew the legal liabilities and right to sue by not using a certified interpreter they would have taken care of this right up front. Of course most police dept don't know this nor do they seem to care at times. I would just have liked a best practice access to communication and certified interpreter request protocol to have been modeled. Ohhh yes this is a big dream with police dept. I love Law and Order and do give credit for including so many deaf actors. This is great.

Code of ethics

Which code of ethics was that?

He didn't interpret when he was in private place.

I don't recall all the situations where I saw code of ethics being broken. Remember screaming at my TV more than once...smile. But as an employee of the police dept the interpreter/CODA/police officer left the interrogation room and went behind the mirror glass to talk to others. This is a code of ethics violation as the terp is there to terp only not consult. This mixed role in general violates code of ethics. The code of professional conduct code of ethic was broken due to conflict of interest. The interpreter was an employee of the police dept...clear bias. This is just one example. I may sound like I am being picky but the code of ethics protect both the interpreter and the deaf/hard of hearing consumer. It is a strength. I wish we could see best practice demonstrated on my favorite program!

if anyone wants to see detailed code of ethics pdf it is on Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. I think that this police dept is lucky to have someone with any sign skills at all, much less a CODA. Of course in a one hour show they can't show everything. I too would like to go back and look at the entire show and send NBC a blow by blow code of ethics violation and commentary. I did try to get on the Law and Order Board but have not recv an email confirmation yet. So NBC has yet to hear from me.

Wow, two popular shows both had storylines with deaf people. As usual I missed it coz I never watch CSI. Always found it too gruesome with the blood and gore and dead bodies! Hehe.

Was that episode on CSI NY that had to do with a young man that was deaf but had to get CI and later kidnapped his baby after murdering his mother? If that is the one I have seen it before... and was saying whoa man...
