Law & Order: Criminal Intent TV show, April 3rd NBC channel

Watch it next week on USA channel.
I'll have to do that.

My friends told me that they would be easily seen. Either they thought they would be easily seen and I completely overlooked it... or they were put in a spot where they are almost invisible. :dunno:

I watched the show last night and in my opinion, It was all right but it was not that exceptional. Sure, the storyline sounded great and it was interesting. I'll give that +1.

However, The show did not even try to get all of the pan shot of the signs that the actors/actress portrayed in this episode. I felt like I was sort of missing half of the conversation while I was watching it. The closed captioning helped in a way but still, I'd like to see more of the signs than reading the captions.

Since I'm an interpreter, I naturally gravitated toward that aspect of the show. They completely screwed it up. Interpreters in a criminal investigation should be a neutral and impartial certified professional. The cop who was interpreting should not have been interpreting. As a cop, he's not neutral or impartial. Any evidence offered from the interpretation could be challenged by the defense attorney. TV always gets interpreting wrong.

Yes, I certaintly agree with you. Any law enforcement never get involvement between client and certified interpreter. They broke their ecthics!! Whoa ! I am too unhappy with this interpreter role on the T.V. show because it will give a bad infludence for the audience. What if the town police, they think - they can interpreter for the Deaf clients with serious crime case. Oh please...

I am very disappointed in the T.V. show. It is very bad sample for the realisc world !

Ditto. I was thinking "That's all?" I felt like I wasted an hour of my time watching it due to all the hype about tonight's programme.

Yeah, I am tired of the hearing productor tends to cutting off the full ASL performance. The camera stayed at the detecive stucks sign language and focus on interpreter. Just like Marleen Martin, she signed but the camera spot at the interpreter all the way in the several shows.

It is not good practice for the hearing students who want to become an interpreter. How could they learn in their visual sign language when they watch the T.V. show? Of course, turn the closed captioned off. ;)

I did watched for last 15 to 20 min at beginning then I fell asleep till almost end of the show! :ugh3: I was so tired! I guess my brain said it is boring show and wanted to go zzzz instead of watch. :dunno:

Not bad for a show series that's about to get it's plug pulled.

Not Satisfied!

I was looking forward to the show last night. I was disappointed because not only was the topic, cochlear implant, old and tired they did not show proper certified interpreter request protocol. As a long time interpreter and someone who cares about deaf community access this is the true "criminal intent". I have terp friends who are CODAs, certified, follow code of ethics and have integrity...but this CODA character in the show did not mention if he was trained or certified. He had clear conflict of interest. My dream deaf topic show would be a court case using certified interpreters (both hearing and deaf) and show the power of the ADA as a full access and equality law. This would be a true educational opportunity for so many hearing professionals who are clueless! Though I feel strongly about CI, as an invasive medical "fix", I mostly think it is a just a tired old plot line. I think even uninformed hearing people are tired of it as an excuse for a deaf storyline.

I give NBC an applause for having more deaf actors on tv, bec its a major step for TV.
I agree with most of you the signing parts would cut-off during a signed conversation and ethical practices for the interpreter were out of line. I have to remember this is Hollywood doing this, they sort of twist things around for a better production in my opinion.
That's Hollywood for you

Did the deaf victims or deaf suspects specifically request a certified interpreter?

Even uncertified interpreters are supposed to follow the code of ethics.

It wasn't clearly explained in the program but I was under the impression that the interpreter was a police officer (notice the badge he wore) who served as staff interpreter for the department.

Which code of ethics was that?

He didn't interpret when he was in private place.

Missed about 30 minutes of the show. Started watching where they had arrested Larry and he refused to let the cop interpreter sign. Missed the murder scene and all.

Thought it was strange a cop would be interpreting. Wouldn't a big place like NYC have access to certified non-partial terps that have nothing to do with being a cop?

Another problem I saw was the way they had the sign language going. Most of the time it was blocked or shot poorly that the hands were not visible.

Also thought the storyline was old; the usual cochlear implant debate and having a hearing sibling "abandon" the deaf sibling. I don't think I missed the first 30 minutes after all.

The CI debate isn't really old, it's still argued today. I see it argued a lot with deaf students at NTID.

I didn't see it but some friends of mine new some people who were on the show.

I taped that show last night and watched it this morning... I was impressed by the fact that Law and Order did have deaf actors there.. but some things did bother me... I wondered why for one example, the 3 cops at the ice skating party would be somehow trying to find out what the deaf couple on the ice were "arguing" abuot and the other cop that was doing the interpretting had to turn aaway but still get some of the conservatoin and relay to the main cop.. eh.. also one of the deaf suspects was complaining abuot wanting a deaf cop and the cop that was interpretting later said his parents were deaf.. I say eh might explain why.. I admit I am not good at the signing level of ASL as I am level 1 and my emotion showing is in need of improving somehow.. ehh but some signs I was trying to see what going on but ah..

It was good to see Deanna Bray on that show and also one interesting thing, while she was in a segment where she was chatting to someone on webcam on a monitor that showed the other person in full view... I wonder if Deanna is still working and is the show she worked in "FBEye" still going on or has ended production?
