i missed the show :-(
I'll have to do that.Watch it next week on USA channel.
Since I'm an interpreter, I naturally gravitated toward that aspect of the show. They completely screwed it up. Interpreters in a criminal investigation should be a neutral and impartial certified professional. The cop who was interpreting should not have been interpreting. As a cop, he's not neutral or impartial. Any evidence offered from the interpretation could be challenged by the defense attorney. TV always gets interpreting wrong.
Ditto. I was thinking "That's all?" I felt like I wasted an hour of my time watching it due to all the hype about tonight's programme.
Did the deaf victims or deaf suspects specifically request a certified interpreter?I was looking forward to the show last night. I was disappointed because not only was the topic, cochlear implant, old and tired they did not show proper certified interpreter request protocol. As a long time interpreter and someone who cares about deaf community access this is the true "criminal intent". I have terp friends who are CODAs, certified, follow code of ethics and have integrity...but this CODA character in the show did not mention if he was trained or certified. He had clear conflict of interest. My dream deaf topic show would be a court case using certified interpreters (both hearing and deaf) and show the power of the ADA as a full access and equality law. This would be a true educational opportunity for so many hearing professionals who are clueless! Though I feel strongly about CI, as an invasive medical "fix", I mostly think it is a just a tired old plot line. I think even uninformed hearing people are tired of it as an excuse for a deaf storyline.
Which code of ethics was that?Even uncertified interpreters are supposed to follow the code of ethics.
It wasn't clearly explained in the program but I was under the impression that the interpreter was a police officer (notice the badge he wore) who served as staff interpreter for the department.
It used to be the RID Code of Ethics; now it's called the Code of Professional Conduct for RID and NAD interpreters.Which code of ethics was that?
So, was that detective a certified RID or NAD interpreter? It used to be the RID Code of Ethics; now it's called the Code of Professional Conduct for RID and NAD interpreters.
RID's Code of Ethics
The CI debate isn't really old, it's still argued today. I see it argued a lot with deaf students at NTID.Missed about 30 minutes of the show. Started watching where they had arrested Larry and he refused to let the cop interpreter sign. Missed the murder scene and all.
Thought it was strange a cop would be interpreting. Wouldn't a big place like NYC have access to certified non-partial terps that have nothing to do with being a cop?
Another problem I saw was the way they had the sign language going. Most of the time it was blocked or shot poorly that the hands were not visible.
Also thought the storyline was old; the usual cochlear implant debate and having a hearing sibling "abandon" the deaf sibling. I don't think I missed the first 30 minutes after all.
