US DOT report confirms speed not major cause of accidents

Sometimes numbers lie. But we keep them around because they tell the truth more often than not. The NHTSA undertook a two-and-a-half year study that examined 5,471 injury accidents nationwide in order to figure out how accidents were being caused. Government researchers conducted their own evidence gathering at crash sites in order to establish a first-hand account of causation. What did they find? Among other things, that more drivers crashed as a result of crossing the center line (11%) than as a result of speeding (5%). Speeding, in this case, defined by "too fast for conditions," not necessarily above the posted limit.

In accidents where driver error was the cause, speeding also came in last as a causative: the 8% who drove too fast were tied with the 8% who fell asleep or had heart attacks while driving. What's more, the NHTSA's causation percentages are strikingly similar to the percentages found in an independent study conducted by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. In its study of crashes in 2007, the VDoT found that 2.9% were due to speeding -- dead last -- while 3.8%t were due to drivers falling asleep or falling ill at the tiller.

What will this mean to the politicians setting and revising speed limits based on the "Speed Kills!" mantra? Probably nothing. But it's nice to know, and nice to have the government researched numbers to back it up.

Is that mean highway patrol no longer give us ticket for speeding?

Major cause of accident will be... road rage!

lol unfortunately no. The major cause of accident is often overlooked - the human error. I suppose that since speeding is not the major cause of accidents.... this means a change in government's approach toward to fixing the problem. I really hope they fix the driver education because it's a joke.... especially for teens

Just wait till my flying car dream comes true. Once our world is like the jetsons, I wonder how will we moderate people driving in the air?

One thing I can think of: Slow drivers stay on the ground.

Just watch Fifth Element. People drive in air

I wish to drive "Back to the Future" Delorean car. :laugh2:

I notice if you speed, you focus more than you do when you are driving slow.

Its true... And, I agree with the article.

If speed is the primary cause of accidents, then the autobarn would have the highest road toll in the world.

it's not solely because of speed though. It's mainly because German has a very stringent driver ed program, stringent laws & penalty, a very efficient system for Autobahn. plus - autobahn is completely covered by security cameras. You will get ticketed for tailgating and even a display of aggressive/hostile gesture (road rage)! Think about how we tailgate all the time and we hardly get a ticket for it... but not in autobahn. There was an episode talking about this in good detail in History channel or something.

that's why people say - "Germans are the best drivers in the world!"

That makes sense. I didn't know there are security cameras, which I think is a good idea, because there are too many drivers that don't know how to drive; or just too many stupid people. :)

Actually, Finnish drivers are the best in the world..;)

When I was a kid, I actually thought that car was faster than everything else.

If someone said, "Hey, look at that Lamborgini!" I'd reply with, "So what, I want that Back to the Future car... it's so fast it sparks with lightning and leaves fire lines on the ground!" ;)

It would be cool that if we have no speed limit on major highways like the one in Germany. Can you image going over 180+mph on highway for fun? :hmm: well, its fun to me lol.

i wanna drive on autobhann!!!!!!!!!!!!! .. not here in usa.. ugh.. too many idoit driver rme!! they seem dont care about thier drive education class! thier important is just greedy to pass the class.. that it.. just like money busniess! rme! that is why our gov take thier job as researching.. now they seem proved that speeding is not only cause.. it is human error! i already know that! i learn that from tv program in history as they show from eupro story.. * eupro story* no wonder they are smart driver..
i look at usa.. i feel like embassing.. rme!

Try speeding on I-35 in Kansas (south of Olathe) cuz the highway was straight and gentle curves . Porsche did about 200+ mph when I drove my 72' VW bug back in 1985 at night. The porsche zoomed past my VW very fast that it disappeared into darkness matter of seconds (I still can see red rear parklights shrinking to nothing fast). It nearly blew my VW off the highway. I was driving 55mph at that time. So go figure.

My hearing friend who was an Airforce pilot. He told me he drove 145mph from Olathe to Witchita at night for 2 hours (typically 4 hours drive at 60mph). He floored his car for 2 hours non-stop and cops didn't catch him if clocked. He said it was too fast for cops to catch him. Highway lights whizzed by making "twang" sounds. He did that several times but stopped afterward not wanting to attracts any cops in the future.

Off topic...while speed may be exhilirating to some, the economic reality for most people in this economy is the slower you drive, the better gas mileage you get; just don't go too slow to be a danger to self and others.

Xactly!! That's what I hate the most!! slow driver in highway. They're driving 45mph under 70mph zone on slow lane I had to pull over to 2nd lane at 75mph and watch car zoom behind me  I would consider safety hazard when someone drive too slow on road.

I'd rather everyone driving at same speed limit!!
