Just heard on the news that Navy Chaplains have been cleared to perform same sex marraiges as soon as DADT is repealed.

By golly, there is hope for society!

If they are in a state that accepts same-sex marriages, and if the chaplain's religion doesn't forbid it.

Still a big move forward. From DADT to Navy Chaplains performing same sex weddings. I see progress.

The Navy is not state-specific, it's a federal military.

Some churches bless gay unions, some don't so I expect the same with chaplains.

No kidding. They still have to follow the laws of the states and countries where they're stationed.

That's right. They follow the beliefs of their own denomination.

But those that want to perform same sex marraiges can now do so. Wasn't possible under DADT.

It's a step towards something all right.

Are you sure? They're pretty exempted from a lot of things.
It used to be. Back in the 1970's, for example, some states had drinking ages of 18, some were 21. On military bases, it was 18 years old, even if the state law was 21. That was done away with when all the states went to 21.

Usually military people are exempt from residency requirements in states, for such things as in-state tuition at colleges, transferring vehicle registration, state income tax, and voting. They do have to obey the laws of each state and country where they live.

"Tidd [Chief of Chaplains] wrote that Navy chaplains may participate in such a ceremony as long as it is consistent with the tenets of their religion and is allowed under the laws of the state."

It don't make me so happy because I want gay marriage to be legal in all states and have DOMA to be completely strike down.

Man, DOMA is being a real pain in the butt.

Come on, do away with marriages (hetero or homo) altogether!

Clinton in 2012! Oh wait....he is having a change of heart.....nevermind
