Jury Duty?

Has anyone ever been summoned to serve on jury duty?....Did you have an interpretor? What was the experience like?

My friend (deaf) sent me an email saying she is summoned for jury duty, and is so nervous. She lives in California. Any input here as to what she might expect would be appreciated....thks!
 
I had a terp once. Unfortunately, my name didn't get chosen from the ticket so we didn't get to spend more time together. She was a very nice lady.
 
i was... and I asked my audiologist to write them a note to excuse myself out of it. Mainly because I do not really have a decent communication skills (even with captioning, my vocabulary skills are not the best due to growing up hearing mumblings now and then, and asking people to repeat, and they end up making it into something short and simple for me) .

If i learned ASL, I probably had to do it anyway.
 
The preliminary meeting the choose jurors out of hte group.they ask if anyone has hardships and can't do it. The lady can inform them at that time. Or visit the juror supervisor before hand and explain the situation. No need to be nervous. Usually very accomodating.
 
I've never been chosen, but would love to serve. I'm sure some people are aware that you never know what type of trial there will be, and asked if you are or are not in favor of the death penalty....And not knowing how long the trial will be drawn out....or if the jury will be "locked down" or sequestered...so many things to think about. And of course, not being able to discuss any aspects of the trial, even to family members.

It's our American duty, if we are fit to serve.
 
I was summoned few days ago and served done, just that they got enough jurors so I didn't have chance. This was my 4th summons, and never had chance sit on juror bench.

The juror job is really simple.

Just listen to everybody in the court room. NO talking at all, no nothing just pure listening mode.

Once the DA and defendant rest their case, the judge will explain the laws related to the case, and juror must decide if there is any doubt to *EVERY* evidences present by District Attorney. The defendant have option to present evidence but not required to do so. All 12 jurors will go to separate room to discuss, 12 jurors must vote yes OR no, can't have both. If one juror had 1% doubt of a evidence, then must vote not guilty, period. If all 12 jurors agree that every DA evidences is 100% obviously then can vote guilty.


Remember, the accused defendant is innocent until proven without doubt guilty by jurors based on evidence and which law has been violated.

It is NOT that hard, you can not be bite for doing juror duty. You will be bitten if avoid juror duty.

Over here in England deaf people arent allowed to go on jury duty. I dont know if it is an actual law but my mum told me i would never been able to

Yep, I received a letter askin' for me to be one. It will be due in October ( next month ). There'll be an interpreter for me on that day.

I was called to jury duty but I am lucky I got out of it somehow cuz if I got summoned for jury duty I wud not like to stay in seat all day cuz I wud be pissed so lucky for me they leave me alone since probably 9 years now :D first time was in h.s I was 19 and 2nd time was probably 9 years ago

Fuck jury duty. The idea of sitting all day just to hear your name be called to determine whether you are a good candidate for Jury Duty is not pleasant and I refuse to do that. I've been excused from Jury Duty the last time I was summoned. :gives: I don't care for court and I don't want to end up in a situation where the trial goes on and on and on and on like the OJ Simpson trial, fuck that. I have a life to live. Jury Duty wastes my time.

Just tell your friend to get a doctor to write a letter saying that jury duty wouldn't be good for your friend's anxiety and that it could cause panic attacks. That could get her off of Jury Duty. :D
 
Let's hope that you are never in the opposite situation where you or a loved one depend on a trial by jury for justice. It would be awful if your jury had that attitude.

I'm thankful for the people who are willing to do their civic duty as Americans.

Civic duty for all that believe in democracy, free will and "rights of man and the citizens."

I second Reba's post. Or rather... thrice after Robin's.

I tried. Twice was called. I requested that they provide real time captioning (CART) from a person who is certified for court reporting. They excused me. WTF?
