I will report to Sorenson about this!! You need show proof rates poll???

O rly? You will ran in crying and tell Sorenson about what I talk about? That remind me of being kid I do the very same thing. Ahh.. good memories I was such a brat kid.

I'm sorry, I don't know about rate poll or something... What is that?

Today at my work, I talked to my boss and his wife is currently working at the Sorenson. I found out some more information about Sorenson. I know that the business is not going shut down or losing business since his wife said that the building in south Salt Lake City, (for tech support and SIP relay operators) is moving next to Sorenson's headquarter about a block away from my home in this Fall. SO that verified that Sorenson is still going strong.

When we installed Sprint Relay on Sorenson. We struggled to go through with Sprint because Sorenson block them. Now, FCC is under investigated because Sorenson is not welcome Sprint, it is very hurtful for the Sorenson Relay Service. We wait and wait for vrs from Sorenson Relay service for half hour. Sprint Relay appeared on the screen few mintues. It become more completive between with Sorenson, Sprint and ThatsHamilton, etc..

FCC is not happy with this service.

Several factors.

Where did you hear the news?

If Sorenson have cut salary, why they post the job position on their website?

I do not know if that is true they are losing business. If they are, they are still bound by law to post job position advertisement. That is federal law. I have my own business and I know pretty much (and there are a lot more) about laws. You have to advertise at least once a year even any business not hiring. I learned about this law 5 years ago when I was applying for a job and they were not hiring anybody but had to have help wanted sign up!

I rather see the "black n white" proof on papers etc than the hands gossip.....

Maybe that true. Because of lack interpreter. I use SVRS almost every week. Most them have trouble understand important thing I said.

That is true! Somebody informed me that Sorenson does not require certificate interpreter and hired many non certificate interpreters to work for Sorenson. I was not satisfying with few interpreters who do not understand me. I feel that Sorenson needs to change the policy about require certificate interpreter!

BUT CSD VRS requires certificate interpreters and hire certificate interpreters. Because it is too picky on requirement certificate interpeters. They do not want to be rushing to hire anyone. LIke Sorenson tends to rush hiring more non certificate interpreters!

If you do hear the rumors about Sorenson issue, then why not you call Sorenson VRS and ask them question directly by yourself?????

HA! That what I said at post #15. There is no proof. I can ask my friend who works VRS but she's on away vacation right now.

Not exactly true

From the SorensonVRS website:

Sorenson VRS

Are the ASL interpreters qualified and certified?
Yes, Sorenson VRS interpreters are either certified by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD IV or V), or RID (CI, CT, CI/CT, CSC) or hold a state interpreter certificate at the Intermediate or Master Certificate skill levels, or have the professional interpreting experience to become a Sorenson VRS interpreter. All interpreters receive on-going training.

With VRS growth, there is a shortage of interpreters for all VRS companies, so some will be better at ASL than others.

Today I spoke to one of Sorenson VRS interpreter about this issue. She said that is not true. She said that Sorenson still prefers to have anyone who is certificate interpreter with 4 level but must require to take testing less than one year if anyone did not take it then will be fired. I got clarify from her so that all i know of this information!

Fishy rumors? ha... yeah it is always good idea to ask people who works at sorenson if these were true. Instead believing the rumors, would be wise to ask.

My neighbors says they are still hiring more intepreters and tech support. Sorenson are still donating a lot of money to deaf community. I can see they are growing and growing bec I live right by the headquarter. ;)

We will have new Sorenson building in Long Island, NY soon. They are working on to getting things set up.

FYI, Sorenson is just like any companies, as far as I know they grow at fast pace! The demands kept climbiing for VRS, remember only 10% of deaf currently have their own VP or access to VP, the rest of 90% do not have any access for various reasons. Just like any companies, employees will always come and go! I have talked with several interpreter who experience working at VRS (Note: VRS means any VRS companies), some of them love it, some of them hate it; many of them don't like sit all day and terp, prefers travel and move around. Some of them were able to succeed pass the test and could stay, while others may failed and need to go. There are always various reasons why people tend to come and go.

For more information, feel free read in newsletter at Sorenson VRS
This can clear up what you may have heard elsewhere.

Back to popcorn pot, and enjoy the show!

You know that you just spoken like that? If we expect that you are expert with lip reading and interpreter whatever it is say. If you don't understand and should I said, kekeke, you FIRED!

When you see a prefect interpreter, name one. please.

I know there are some interpreters who work in VRS (Sorenson, CSDVRS, HOVRS, etc) who probably aren't qualified to work there. But before you judge an interpreter, keep in mind a few things:

  • Interpreting certification is like a driver's license. It means an interpreter can handle most routine situations. It doesn't mean that s/he is ready for anything.

  • Before you criticize an interpreter's ability to understand you, make sure you have adequate lighting that does NOT come from the side or behind you, but coming from in FRONT of you. Your light should be near your VP, not to the side of you or behind you.

  • Make sure your connection speed is high.

  • Make sure your VP is focused correctly.

  • Make sure you that you are in the center of the screen with the top of your head near the top of the screen. When you are too far away or too close, we can't see you well enough to understand what you're saying.

  • ASL is a high-context language, which means that the meaning of the sign you use varies greatly depending on what signs come before and after it. So when you get an interpreter and call a hearing person and then you sign TIME with your eyebrows furrowed, I don't know whether to voice "What time is it?" or "What time are you coming over?" or "What time should I come over?" Give the interpreter a little context and they'll understand you better.

I've been certified for 11 years, and I still sometimes get a caller that I have a hard time understanding. There are no perfect interpreters.
