Is Sign Language the hottest topic?

COOL RR! The lady kinda make me go zzz cuz of her signs kinda a bit sloppy. Anyway kids are too cute with signs!

My son signs since he was 12 months old and still doing it. :) His school know we are deaf. I caught my son signing with no voice, so that his habit. That's fine with me. :) His choice to be comfortable. He can talk to me with no voice also. So cute!

That's cool, Cheri. Also, I find it ironic that it is okay for hearing children to learn sign language because of all of it's benefits, etc. But in other places and amongst many hearing people, it is not okay for a deaf child to learn sign language.

Indeed. I think Amy Choen Efron even did a four part vblog commenting on that. She calls it The Greatest Irony which is a rather apt title.

I remember, my two sons were at Junior High School, their friends know fingerspelling and few sign language. When they were in the cafeiteria. Their privacy conversation about the girls, etc.. in sign language and fingerspelling... Other students were not able to understand their privacy conversation and frustration. Princple had a meeting with me, some teachers were not appreciate because my sons and their friends tend to use fingerspelling instead of talk. I asked him is there any problem with that? Is there any illegal? Princple said no, it was not fair other students did not understand their conversation. I said, look at the spanish language, they do speak privacy. he gulped. LOL

I think, it was funny because his friends love to learn dirty sign first words. That is how, they become more motivation to learn sign language and fingerspelling.

That's exactly what makes me go, Huh? It's okay for a deaf child not to be able to understand what all the hearing kids are talking about, but if someone starts to sign and the hearing kids can't understand them, all of a sudden its a big deal! Looks like a double standard to me!

Yea my thoughts exactly. That happened at the dinner table at my best friend's house. This was after we both finally became fluent in ASL and was the first time eating dinner with her parents. The last time was when we were both oral. Anyways, my friend has a deaf brother who signs too and I havent seen all of them for like 5 or 6 years. So, we are sitting on the table and her parents and other brothers who are hearing starting chatting away. Of course, the 3 of us didnt know what they were saying so naturally, we starting chatting using sign language and I was telling her brother what made me finally learn sign when all of sudden her mother turned to us and demanded us to use our voices. I was like, huh? My friend was like "sshhh ssshhh..use your voice use your voice." I was like "no way!" Her mom said that it was rude for us to sign without voice cuz the other members didnt know sign and didnt know what we were talking about. I stood there completely in shock. I told my friend that I am leaving cuz I didnt appreciate that and she was like why? I said "Do U UNDERSTAND what they are saying when they chat without signing??" She was like no and I said then why should we change our ways for them if they dont change their ways? She said that they are just older..kept making all kinds of excuses but I wouldnt take it. I dont care how old fashioned they were but that was just simple inequality that occurred and I wouldnt stand for it. I wish I had told her mom what I thought but I guess I was too shocked that she expected us to meet their needs but dont expect themselves to meet our needs and that my friend and her brother didnt stand up to them. I left and my friend stayed mad at me for like a week after that. So much for our trip to AZ being fun. *sighs*

Situations like these..I call it "It is ok for them to do that but not ok for us to do that." Happens to me too often.

Maybe it's just me or maybe I am lucky and live in an area where sign language is not as supressed as I keep hearing about. :dunno:

RR, I will view the picture when I am home from work...

wow it's cool, Cheri...

It's really wonderful to expose hearing children to know what sign language is about.

I would like to share about my sons and his friends here.

I beleive some of you know that my both boys know sign language since they were babies.

My boys' friends in our house... They were like :ugh3: when we sign with voice or without voice to them... Their friends asked my sons what we talked about... They interpreted them... They were like wow and want to learn sign... They learn bit to bit... which is great ... example like that... "thank you", "bye"... "good" "bad" "cold" "hot", something simple like that...

At school, the teachers were like :eek3: when my oldest son first attend school when he was 6 years old and sign to us... They started to wonder how my both sons can speak to hearing and sign to us deaf parents. They started to use my both sons as an interpreter. I stopped them and told them that they are my sons, not my interpreter... Call neutral interpreter if they want to talk with us. They accepted.

I didn't know that my both boys sign without voice until my Dad told me last April 2007 and then my co-worker... I was like :eek3: and thought my both boys use voice when they sign to us. Of course I asked them why they sign to us without voice. They said that they prefer to sign us without voice because they feel comfortable with this... I was like Okkkaaayyyy... I guess that it could be that they learn from us... - We sign with voice to them and then my hubby & I sign each other without voice...

Do you and your family sign in ASL or German Sign Language?

Do you and your family sign in ASL or German Sign Language?

We use German Sign Language.

My boys can´t do with BSL and ASL but GSL.

I am the one who can do with BSL when I am in England and fluently ASL when I am in America.

Serious? I didn't think of her signs as being sloppy, she actually made me laugh...

Yeah, her signs are kinda amateurish, Angel, altho cute. So this might give you an idea how far away she is from signing native-like ASL. Not putting her down...this is cute at this stage with the kiddies.

Ok, GSL, Leibling. Is GSL, syntactically like written German?

I say, good for you shel. Sometimes it is just necessary to take a stand. And if we don't stand up for injustice in all its forms, we give permission for it to continue. Hold to those ethics, girl!

Aw this is soo cute seeing a cat and dog signing to each others...

I viewed RR´s video... really cuteeeeee... I love to see children sign like that... awwww

intresting u brought this in the forum i happen to have met the lady who made this when she made a tour over here in hilo hawaii. Signing Times, she was cute doing this, BUT really. her signing was a bit hard to read she was using PSE ( pidgin Sign English) so it was alright but good for the little ones to learn :)

No, that is not what I meant. Grammar of GSL same as written German grammar?

Ohhhh... No, GSL is not similar as German written grammar. We use GSL as short sentence than write a long sentence. I would say that GSL is similar as ASL.

Example:
GSL - I go shop 5 min.

written sentence
I will leave here for go to shopping within 5 minutes.

This is true, liebling. Although I do not know German Sign Language, I do know something about the structure of auditory/oral languages as compared to signed languages. ALL auditory/oral language have, as the foundation of their syntax, a linear structure because this is the way that the auditory system perceives and process information. The eye is specialized to recieve information spatially and in time orientation.....therefore all signed languages are syntactically arranged to produce information in the way that the eye best receives it. Signed langages are similar, and audiotry/ oral languages are similar.

That is why MCE's are so confusing. They take a system designed for the way the eye receives information, and put in into a structure that is meant for the ear. Very confusing to the brain!
