That Yiz would fling about the term "hypocrite" is some of the best comedy I've read in recent days on AD, and I've read a lot of good comedy here the last few days.

Keep complaining about them damn liberals, Yiz. Meanwhile, don't go bitching when your unemployment gets cut, your wife's SS gets cut, and nobody gives a shit about you being in a rut. That's the conservative way, after all.
 
As for Michael Moore. I do think he can be hypocritical, but he still makes some excellent points, and he's a hell of a lot straight a shooter than most conservative pundits. Still, that's all he is: a pundit. But to discredit the arguments he makes or the ideology he believes in simply because he is a hypocrite is what is known as a non-sequiter and is a fallacy of logic.

In some of my blacker moods, I've considered voting for security cuts to teach old folks a lesson. I don't get why they vote for Republilcans who threaten to cut off their social security. :P

Some people are like lemmings; they will follow the leader, no matter the consequences. It works for both parties. I think it revolves around one core issue, such as gun control. There are union guys that vote Republican, against the wishes of the union, simply based on the gun issue. There are people that would certainly benefit from having a Republican elected, but vote Democrat based on environmental issues.

Right. However, I've always been under the impression that the old folk who do this are under the impression that if social security is cut off, it won't happen to them only to folk they deem undeserving of social security and that it won't apply to them.

Who knows what inspires them. I have read some extremely bitter things against Obama from one of the sweetest older ladies you could imagine. When I would try to discuss, she would just move on and post another topic about his birth record, etc. There was no reasoning. She was on a MISSION.

Beats me. :dunno: It's not just limited to old ladies. I can think of one family member who's just as unreasonable as your example. Sometimes, I think he's the reason why I prefer to take the reasonable approach to situations. It took me a long time for me to realize no amount of reasons or facts would sway him if he had his mind set on something.

People became rich before Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations came Out and they will become rich long after Capitalism is dead.

That is part of the problem right there - making people feel they need to depend on government for their own well-being.

That is part of MY problem; when I have been paying into this system all my life, and someone comes along and thinks we should stop all government assistance. What do I get for my investment in SS? There is a reason these things are out there.

I suppose it's true there were rich people in the Soviet Union. They got all the nice cars, drove on the nice roads, and shopped in the nice grocery stores where normal people weren't allowed.

There is no proposal out there to stop all government assistance. There is a proposal that would effect nobody over 55 and would fix the structurally problems by doing things like raising the retirement age and means-testing. This is necessary to prevent mathematical reality from issuing severe painful cuts later down the road.

This is why I would prefer private accounts. When the Social Security administration sends me a letter telling me how many tens of thousands of dollars I've thrown into the system, I'm not sure whether I've thrown it into a giant sinkhole or not. It kind of ticks me off. If I had a personal account, I could feel some pride that I had saved this money and it would be sitting there waiting. Private accounts are structurally much more sound than the current schemes in place and we wouldn't have to deal with the politics of fixing a broken system.

The only problem for me with private SS accounts is the effects on the stock market. There is a risk involved there. I guess some people would enjoy the challenge of playing the market, but it comes with a big price tag if you pick a loser.

Raising the SS age requirements does affect me, but I plan to work well past that age. I want to do work that helps people, without regard to the size of my paycheck. I cannot see myself sitting home, replying to AD threads and Facebook statuses when I am 70, so why not keep busy? Famous saying: "If you find a job you love, you will never work a day."
