Is it true that you have to have speech therapy when you have a CI?

it's part of "maintenance". Every skill does decline over time if you don't practice it regularly. Your speaking skill will gradually decline if you stop going to speech therapy but now that you're going to be 18 - an adult with legal rights to make a decision for yourself. Your mom shouldn't be telling you what to do. You should be free to go back to speech therapy if you ever need to at later time.

My speech skills never declined since I stopped going to speech therapy when I graduated from high school (21 years ago). Plus, I am not a CI user. So, what do you mean by that?

I have heard of those who lost hearing would distort their speech over the time. Maybe it doesn't happened to every person who lost hearing.

I think you are referring to late deafened who had hearing speech skills prior to loosing their hearing, aren't you? They will, indeed, develop what is known as the "deaf accent" over time.

But someone like Shel, or my son, or AlleyCat that learned speech skills while they were deaf will often not deteriorate without "maintenance therapy." That is the SLP's hook to keep you coming back. My son hasn't has any speech therapy since the 6th grade and that was only one hour a week. His skills are the same, if not better, than they were then.

Same here. I have not taken speech since 10 grade.

Right.

What is SLP?

Yeah, I still have a deaf accent, even thou I'm only hoh. I don't think ANY amount of speech therapy will perfect the mechanics of speech. (the boring parts like pitch, volumne etc) I wish I'd known about that....I HATED speech....SO effing boring.

I hated speech therapy as well. I tried to weasel out by claiming my tongue was too big for the difficult words. :giggle:

Your choice. DOn't go. Period.

I want to not go, but my parents refuse to let me get out of speech therapy. They said that I should feel lucky to be able to talk because most of my deaf friends can't talk as well as I can. I don't know how else to explain to them to tell them that I do not want to go.

I wondered if it is part of IEP as well.

What did you have to work on the last time you had speech therapy?
Last year I mainly worked on my comprehension, and mainly working on my new ear; the N5 which I had got activated in october of '10. So I almost had this implant for almost a year now.

I thought she had mentioned somewhere else that she was turning 18. Maybe I'm confused.

Hey, coolgirlspyer...how the heck old are you, lol?

:giggle: I just turned 18 on a friday on the 26th

Then you are old enough to make these decisions for yourself. You don't need your parents' signature on your IEP. You can sign it yourself, and you can determine what goes in.

Have you tried letting your parents read some of the things that deaf people have to say about speech therapy on AD?

They heard the same stuff before, they still wouldn't listen to me. I always had to argue with my parents about not going to speech. I gave them 15 years of speech therapy.

In my freshman year the school had no speech therapist, the last speech therapist had moved to a different school district and they had to find a substitute speech therapist at the last minute, and I didn't really get that much therapy from the school at the time. But up until my sophomore year-junior year, my Mom asked the school if i can have speech therapy twice a week since I didn't have alot of therapy my freshman year due to that problem since they finally found an official speech pathologist at the end of my freshman year. I did not like that. I was hoping in my junior year that I would not have therapy twice in the week, but nope, i did. I hated it. I'm so sick of doing the same stuff over and over again, its not fun anymore and its just getting old. My parents keeps saying the "You should be lucky to be able to talk while most of your other deaf friends can't" routine and the "the school requires you to have a speech therapy since you have cochlear implants to practice." and whenever i say something wrong by accident my parents would go "See? You need speech therapy." or "this is why you're in speech" I mean AGHHHHH! It makes me want to pull my hair out sometimes when I can't get through to them.

I had speech therapy 2 hours a day, 7 days a week for 10 years (from age 4 till 14) then one day in grade 8, I just balked and refused to go anymore. I'd reached my limit. My mother didn't pressure me to continue because she knew it would be futile, there was nothing she could say or do to force me to continue.

I'm surprised to learn you HAVE to take speech therapy at your school, can schools really mandate this?

Also, how much more improvement can you really get after 15 years of speech therapy? I would think very little. Has your speech therapist noted that you're continuing to improve your speech or are you at this point just "maintaining"?

Gee: Have I missed something-NEVER in speech therapy? Have been part of CHS Speechreading classes.
Does age seems to have bearing on this matter?

You've asked this question before in another thread and it was answered that yes, age does have a bearing. Why are you asking the exact same question again? Especially a question that has an obvious answer.

I guess that gee, yes, you ARE missing something and have been since you've joined AD.

MY CHS classes: I started when I was 60 years old.
I recall some comment before on portion of this discussion- though others repeating seems to be a reoccurring phenomena.
