Is it better to quit your job for a good reason, or to be fired? The reason I am asking is that if you quit your job, you won't get unemployment benefits....but if you are fired, even if it is your fault, you can receive unemployment benefits.
State your reasons why or why not. :)

As fas as I'm aware, you only recieve unemployment benefits if you are laid off.

I can't count how many times I wish I could quit or be fired from my job. Either way, I want out.

If you are at good terms with your boss(es), I see no problem with quitting.

Uhh i didnt vote... i would choice resigned :D than being a quitter.. or get fired

my last job i had, i quit it. unfortunately...now im unemployed and cant find a job. but id rather be homeless then work at my last job. its a long story if u'd like to hear it just let me know. anyway, i quit that job and im glad i did. because when i quit, they said "well ur postion will be filled quickly, we have people in line to do your job" now whenever i go shop there, there is a HUGE green sign that says WE'RE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS and they need people to be baggers. and i think its so funny.

Been there! Was fired last February and I got the unemployment benefits! If you quit, you gotta to have very good reason why. If you were fired based on illegal activity like using drugs, arriving work while intoxicated, started fight, etc. That is WHEN you will be denied for the unemployment benefit.
I voted fired, why? You'd have better chance of finding job sooner if you were fired on ground of internal issues between you and the company. If you quit, that can make you look like a quitter rather being persistant and try to solve the problem.
I was asked by interviewee why I was fired. This was the toughest question But, I first said "look at my excellent attendance record" (Letter of recommendation) and then explain the reason for being fired and that is on ground of internal quality control, and I have tried everything in my faith to solve the problem and this falls on deaf ears (Meaning nobody even bother to try to work on this problem). In fact, I have already asked supervisor for assistance and never got one. I even asked outside help and none even became willing to help. I decide to keep on riding until they kicked me out. I told my current supervisor at the interview that I AIN'T quitter and will do everything to work down on the problem. Guess what? I got hired! As of last Tueday I am an offical employee of my work! I can't say I am hired 3 months ago because first 90 days are considered as probation employee and not a regular employee. So, now I am regular employee, YAYAYAY!

Really this is short version of story. The real story is much longer than that. Anyway, most companies hates quitters. I have a guy who I warned him NOT to quit. He quit his job last November. Since Last November, did he find another job? Unfortunately NO! He did tried to apply position at my work and my supervisor turned him away! That is because my supervisor HATES quitter! Another good friend of mine got fired from a machine shop last June, He did tried to solve the problem but didn't quit until he got fired. A week later, he got another better job! So, if you have problem with your supervisor, I recommend NOT to quit, keep trying to solve problem until your boss quits on you. While keeping trying to solve problem you could look for job elsewhere.

I disagree, however IF you can get good letter of recommendation and try to work with your boss to see what best fit you and your boss.

I have seen people who quit, or walks off are having trouble finding other job! Than those who were fired because of internal issues (Meaning nothing to do with personal issues like poor attendance record, etc)

Today's world is so much different than even a decade ago. It used to be you could quit and find something else. Not as easy to do these days anymore especially when many others are looking for a job.

I agree with diehard that you stay around until you have another option (i.e., job) or forced out.

Ok, the main reason is this:

I do like the workplace I go to, and I enjoy the people....my supervisors had changed my schedule twice (wasn't fully a full-time job) and I did great on both counts. They changed it again to make it full-time, and everytime I do the filing part, it's like I couldn't get it all finished! I had no problems with the other tasks. I had to file also these specific documents, and it took me a while to find all of them...then I go file these subpeonas (lots of papers), and after an hour trying to find the files and file them, I had to go home.
I asked for improvement, and one option is to get faster. I have tried that, and it still isn't working. I was told that other people can get faster than I could on my tasks and have time left over. I seemed to never get current anymore after I had the new schedule. I was also told that if I am not current, it will be my fault.
I am considering a "career change" and thinking about resigning. What do you think I should do? Should I turn in my resignation letter or let them force me out?
Please...no flaming.

No flaming! What I think is best for you to do is stick to the end, try to solve the problem from there. While your at it, you can start look for job elsewhere. My suggest when apply for job elsewhere and they ask you when you can start. YOu could say, 2 weeks after offer the job. That way, your showing them you have no intention to walk off from current job and will give them 2 weeks notice. This gives them impression that your not quitter and that you won't walk off from them in future. Most companies hates people who walks off. Its best to play nice, because you'd never know in future, you got job and your current supervisor could be president of that company in future and you'd be in hot water if you screw up with your current supervisor.

Basically, people tend to remember bad people better than good people. So, that is why its so important to play nice, that way they can forget whole problem they have had with you.

my opinion is if you get fired from a job, if you have an interview for another job.. they'll search you up on why you were fired.. if you quit.. they wouldn't know the real reason why you quit, there can be lot of reasons you quit.

better when you quit than being fired, indeed.

covers up your background information when you quit but if you get fired, you are screwed.

From what I've been told in the past is that company's are only allowed to confirm that someone used to work for a specific employer, and are not allowed to inquire about whether someone was terminated or not. And some companies do not even worry about contacting past employers.

I believe it's much better to say * I quit becuase of blah blah blah* If you have a serious issue related with your supervistor i would said * im giving a 2 week notice with no question asked*

For Fired issue, They do have stupid excuase to fired, I had seen those stupid comments..

It's better to quit than getting fired because it's more easier to get other job. If you get fired, you have it on the records. I wonder how long the records for being fired lasts?

i think it different state by state.. personally i know 2 people from my work were fired because they're not working hard enough.. they get unemployment check almost similar to what they make from my work..

if you quit.. you won't get unemployment check frankly that's bad.. reason u won't get it is because if you can.. then other people will quit too and take advantage.

believe it or not.. I'm dying to get myself fired.. and my boss refuse to fire me :pissed: o well.. i still won't quit.. cuz i know i won't get any money if i quit.. and i will have hard time to find a new job that pays almost the same.. around this town.. i make more than any of them (without a degree or eveluant) this sucks! i'm having too much stress at work.. i wanna focus more at schooling than working.

State your reasons why or why not. :)
If you are fired, it'll look bad on your resume. If you quit, it may or may not look bad on your resume. It is largely depends on what reasons you want to quit (in papers, I mean).

Speaking of unemployment benefits... really? One of my friends quitted his job and he got the unemployment benefits without any problem. Well, I'm not entirely sure about that one. I'll send him a email to find out and let you know whenever I get a response from him.

May I suggest something? Why not keep your job while look for other jobs that you'd like to take? If you find a job or get a job, you can quit your current job and transfer to that new job. That's how I did with my old jobs.

for state of minnesota.. if you're fired.. you can get unemployment checks in no time.. but there's several rules..

you have 2 choices...

fill application at 2 places per week till you find a job..

or go to school and continue recieve unemployment check.
