is being deaf a hereditairy thing?

Jeez. Just go to any genetic scientists and they ll tell you that deaf is hereditary.

honestly we are just kinda starting this relationship so it has just been talk so far. i dont think it would really matter to her and it does not bother me. she brought it up to me and i said if your worried we could adopt, she said she wants her own children. it was just something i was curious about. i do not know what is going on with her hearing, either way she is who she is and i love the person she is. she says she can hear but has a problem with high pitched sounds and she has a problem saying her "s" 's. she down plays it alot and i know its worse than just that but as long as she is ok im happy. thnx for the link, i will check it out.

Yes, there have been a few documented cases of trauma that has manifested as deafness. They're known as somataform disorders. Mental and emotional trauma is manifested as a physical complaint such as deafness, blindness, paralysis, etc. The diagnosis is pretty rare, though.

I was totally 'blind' for about 10 years for mental reasons. It must have been some sort of block as when I started taking mind altering substances I went back to being just legally blind (not totally blind). I still don't understand what caused it. I think it was some sort of mental block which got unblocked because of the drugs I was taking but I will never really know exactly what made it go or even what exactly made it come back. I also used to wear my hearing aids turned off to block out the hearing that I had because I was alergic to sound. Still am in fact.

Allergic to sound? I don't understand. Can you explain what you mean by that? Are you referring to a "hypersensitivity" to sound?

Yes, I think I mean Hypersensitivity. My dad tells me that I've always reacted badly to loud noises even as a kid, but it got a lot worse after I lost my sight. Now I react badly to any noise. I think due to the fact that I started to wear really powerful hearing aids. I found loud noises such as the hover or someone shutting the door literally painful. I used to have a lot of migranes before I stopped using the hearing aids altogether. The only thing that's ever worked to desensitize my sound problem is cannabis but it also makes you weak and stupid so that's no good. Especially now I lead a drug free lifestyle. Free from drugs like alcohol and canabis anyway. I try to be totally drug free but I'll take medical drugs if it can't be avoided.

My mother used to work as a nurse and she said she had a patient at one time who got so upset that she could not move at all. Then she recovered from her paralysis. She was angry with this patient as she thought it'd give the other patients false hope that they could walk again. She said it was all in her head.

dreama,

Thanks for the explanation. :) I understand what you're going through. I've always had recruitment and have been overly sensitive to loud sounds for as long as I can remember. Even now that I have CIs, there are days where I'm overly sensitive to sounds even though my processors are designed to make loud sounds comfortable. Environmental sounds like motorcycles, lawn mowers, car horns, leaf blowers and chainsaws tend to bother me the most, but if I'm having a particularly "overly sensitive" day, even soft sounds can be annoying. :(

....
Only 10% of deaf people inherited their deafness from their parent(s), according to the common statistic.

I am one of them :) and hard of hearing. My father's mother is deaf and there are many hard of hearing members among my father's family tree ( my father is hoh ,as well )

And that is due not so much to a "hearing" issue, but to a cognitive processing issue.

Can you explain what you mean by this?

I know there is a condition known as "auditory hyperesthesia," but I don't know if my sound sensitivity really falls under that category.

My CI audi said this is due to the fact I haven't heard these sounds in a "normal" sense (i.e. the way someone with normal hearing hears them) in many, many years. Because of that, it will take some time before these sounds become comfortable for me to hear. My CI audi also said that with increased exposure to these sounds, my comfort level should increase.

I'm also not used to having the same amount of hearing in both ears. (My left ear has always been worse than my right.) Now with bilateral CIs, I hear 20-30 dB across all frequencies.

There are hundreds of different causes of deafness and things that can damage your hearing.
