oh boy.....

<below just talking about me and my own family>
my folks and myself have all been targets of anti-Semitism, including my mother involved in a conversation which that phrase "Jew someone down....." was used; my dad and his family went when he was kid to Texas due to health reasons related to his sister and they ran into both Klan and Nazis and didn't stay - maybe if there hadn't been any kids involved my Bubbie and Zayde would have stayed, don't know. None of us personally reject the word "Jew" used in a way that to us is plainly not meant to be hurtful....although yes, I do get a this kinda "gut reaction" concern if someone who I know is not Jewish, says "Jew" without any obviously positive connotations - however, then I think - where is that coming from? what can I ask or know before I say that person is anti-Semitic? Is the anti-Semitism really true?
Yes, ignorant, thoughtless people use that phrase, "Jew someone down." They totally misuse the word.

Any good name can be twisted and made ugly by hateful people. It's very sad. :(

Don't let the jerks get you down.

This thread has taken a totally wrong turn (and I did not help it in that respect).

you know - I've never heard of a phrase "jew them down". I don't want to know what it means.

You will never get it as you're not Jewish! You do not ask someone you do do not know if they're a Jew! You could ask the wrong person one day and find yourself flat on the ground!
What are you saying?

You are right that I'm not a Jew, so I don't have the same life experiences. However, I grew up with Jewish friends, and have had many Jewish friends over the decades, and none of them ever said that it was offensive to ask someone whether or not he was a Jew. Some were more offended to be called Jewish instead of Jews.

I do not give a FUCK what that thing said that you posted! There is time and place to use the word 'Jew' and you did not do that ! I would be fine with a Jewish person asking me if I was "Jew "
but not a gentile!
Why is it an offense to ask a Jew if he or she is a Jew? It's not an accusation or insult.

I certainly wouldn't be offended if a Jew asked me if I am a Gentile.

 .. Hope Couple will get Marriage license soon! :)

I have been wondering about the couple - good news on that, then :)

I am curious is "Jew" considered offensive?

My view is that it depends how it is used....over the last 20 years it has had more common usage. Short for a Jewish person. In conversations we don't always add the 'person'. And 'he is a jew person' doesn't ring as english grammar. He's a jewishman? irishman...a german...jewman?
I try to use he's jewish....add the 'a' and he is 'a' jew. sometimes jsut how a person forms thier senctnce.
Seems regular language these day...no offense.

Agreed. It is all in the context. If you call me a "Jew" in reference to my ethnicity, or a relious practice, then no, it isn't offensive.
