In the foot steps of Hear Again and typeing...

thanks, nika! <hugs>

by the way, i'm sorry to hear about the joint pain you experience during the winter. if you don't mind my asking, do you have arthritis or fibromyalgia?

I haven't been diagnosed with anything. I've been to a million doctors and they all say I'm fine, I'm malingering, etc.

I do have a theory as to what it might be, which I can send you in PM if you're curious.

yes, send me a pm because i'd like to discuss this further.

malingering? wow. i know alot of people with fibromyalgia are accused of that.

Thanks for answering my questions.

2. I was born blind and was legally blind until age 12. Through intense therapy and surgery I regained a lot of my vision. This past summer I started going blind again. So I guess a total of 12 years and some odd months.

How much could you see when you were legally blind? When you recovered sight how much use could you eventually make of it? For example would you have been able to see people signing?

I sort of went blind twice as well but the first time I was blind for purely psycosomatic reasons. Then I became low vision for 8 years. Then recently I've become very light sensitive and can't handle light at all. Their are times when I can't hear or see anything.

3. Yes that's true and yes, I do experience glaucoma headaches. Mine are usually either at night or when I'm exercising (increasing the heart rate can increase pressure in the eyeballs.)

I'm sorry to hear about the pain. Also your joint pain. I know what it's like when doctors don't believe anything is wrong. It happens with me too. Sometimes I wish the problem did have a physical cause so at least people could do something about it.

I'm sorry to hear about your shared dislike of cars and bikes. I'm also glad you didn't die biking across the street on a red light!

Thanks.

Also thanks for your kind words about my Experience with Bruce and Jilli. I do carry a cane and a dog at the moment. I'll probably be asked to hand in Jilli's harness soon.

nika,

i also hate cars with a passion. it would be nice if we all could live in a world where everyone walked from place to place. if truth be told, sometimes i think sighted people are too dependent on their vehicles.

I totally agree with this.

I could see about 400/20 in the better eye. I had full visual field. My other eye wavered between about 650/20 and not taking in information because of a problem I had with blocking out incoming information (fancy name: suppression scotoma.) I could see colors and lights. At my best vision I could read regular print with strong reading glasses.

I had about 6 years where I had about 80% of a sighted person's vision, which is when I learned ASL. I have never had depth perception so the hardest thing for me is being able to tell which hand is in front of which or any signs that involving moving towards/away from the signer.

Wow. Someone else that's gone blind more than once! I thought I was alone.
I understand -- I wish more people could understand that psychosomatic illness is legitimate and not self-induced or desired or whatever other things people say.

Are you functionally blind in bright light? I have photophobia and sometimes if it's sunny out it's so bright I have to just close my eyes (even with sunglasses on.) Or in what conditions can you not see anything? In what conditions can you not hear anything? (I'm just very interested, but if you would rather not answer that's fine.)

Thanks so much, dreama. I wish doctors would more easily admit when they didn't know or when they are wrong instead of putting the blame on the patient. Do you mind if I ask what conditions you have that have no known physical cause?

Thank you. I'm sorry that you'll have to retire Jilli soon but I am also glad you won't be guided into streets anymore. Best of luck with everything.

I just want to say thanks everyone for the interesting questions and kind words! <smile>

nika,

interesting. i don't know why, but i always thought you were totally blind. do you have light perception or can you see a little more than that?

I was light perception in the orphanage due to malnutrition (infancy to 3). Then I was only legally blind from 3 to 12. Yes I have light perception. With glaucoma I will eventually be NLP.

If I remember correctly, you're NLP, right?

yes, i'm NLP since birth.

are you able to see the direction of lights and identify their color? i know some people with light perception can do both, if not either/or.

Yes and yes, although colors don't appear normally to me now as they do to other people. (They used to.) In the orphanage I could only tell light/no light, but had no sense of directionality or color.

when you say that colors do not appear normally to you, what do you mean? do you mean that when you see yellow it appears as a different color?

Yes exactly. It depends on the light but sometimes red appears more pink, blue appears more greenish, etc. White can appear brownish or yellowish.

that's really interesting because when i was in blind rehab, we saw a video which said that some people with light perception see yellow in the foreground, but objects as severely disorted and black. is that similar to what you see? hope you don't mind all of my questions.

Did you miss me, Miss Hear Again?

Do I need to ignite something? Muhahaha

the wolf is baaaaaack!!!! :giggle:

i don't know what you're going to ignite, but it isn't going to be me because i'm manic right now and feel *really* good. <doing the happy dance>

I don't mind your questions at all. I guess that is sort of how you could explain my vision in my left eye, although I'm not sure because I'm not 100% what that description means. It's really hard for me to describe my vision, especially since it's been changing a lot lately.

But I'm sure it'll change in next 6 minutes.

It said so on your avatar.

i understand. then again, i guess it would be equally difficult for me to understand what you do see since i've always been totally blind.
