I'm Getting a CI!!!

Regarding the post...that's a real fucked up thing to say...basically blaming the poster for the CI not working out for her. And like here on AD, the person completely disregarded a deaf person's personal account because it threatens HIS agenda. Fucked up. (Excuse my word choices here.)

One example that comes to mind is the little girl from "Sound and Fury", Heather I believe.

She was Deaf of Deaf, yet she expressed a real desire to have the implant. Just some food for thought.

Where is Heather Artinian Today?

"Do you have any memories of why you wanted to get a cochlear implant?

At five, I dont really remember it, but in the movie I said it was because I wanted to hear a car crash happen in Florida, but at 9, to be honest, it was because my brother said he wanted it and I couldn’t let him get it before me."

She wanted the CI at 5- before the age of 9 where it could be argued that her brother "influenced" her. That was 4 years after she had expressed a very real interest in getting the CI.

I'm a firm believer that we are all individuals; with our own minds, will, and desires. I whole-heartedly believe that she wanted that CI for her own personal reasons. Maybe she didn't fully grasp the implications of her desires, but it was her desire nonetheless. She ultimately ended up getting implanted so I think that says something.
 
In that case, that's the basis of why some folks believe the CI should be left up to the individual, not the parents.
 
I have to say that that thread I linked to was very illuminating and there were valid points on both sides of the debate.
