Your daughter may have tinnitus

Welcome to AllDeaf (AD) :welcome:

You will find the information you need here, but there's so much stuff that it takes a while to know where to look. I've only joined recently myself so I don't know the best place to direct you first. Hopefully a more experienced ADer will come along with some suggested threads to read.

However I think the annoying noises your daughter talks about is tinnitus. It's a very common problem that deaf people have. And wearing hearing aids (HAs) helps to mask tinnitus. I suffer from this problem myself, and it can get so loud that I cannot sleep at night. During the day, wearing HAs helps to reduce my tinnitus. Your daughter may have enough residual hearing to be able to use a sound pillow at night to counteract the tinnitus, but I'm not sure. My hearing loss (HL) is graded severe-profound and I'm unable to benefit from sound pillows or other noise-masking devices.

You can also try the 'Search' function (in the pale blue bar below the AllDeaf banner at the top of the webpage). I used it myself, but can get overwhelmed with the number of results. It's best to use several search keywords rather than one. You may also get directed to one thread containing hundreds of posts so it takes a while to read through it all. One very useful thread took me about six hours to read!

First welcome to alldeaf. I am deaf/hoh at birth and now a parent I can tell you this.

its gonna be frustrating at first. the answer here is "time"and "repetition". Only time will teach your child as she experience the same thing over and over.

Just imagine yourself shipwrecked on an island and you are alone and you lost your long term memory in the process. You cant explain why you can talk to yourself, dont know who you are, and why you have a funny feeling in your stomach called hunger but didnt know it at the time.

Over time and with discovery your child will bloom. Its gonna be a long, frustrating road, filled with anger but in the end you will see the light and find your child and your's inner peace that you can never imagine. Any other questions feel free to post here.;)

Hello :) You will get a lot good info here!

Welcome.

I was born profoundly deaf. I did not have tinnitus but maybe one time a year. I have noticed that lots of people with hearing losses talking about the tinnitus. I think why they got tinnitus (as you describes noisy in the head). More likely for those hearing losses who can hear a little tend to have tinnitus that leads to losing more hearing. But not always in the case. My hubby was born profundly deaf and have tinnitus 7 days and 24 hours since he was a baby. Sometimes it can affect his moody but keep distracting in a good way to forget the noisy.

Welcome leahsmom! So much great info here (although you may have to wade through a bit of not so great stuff, too :) ). There's a pretty enormous hearing aid section.

Look forward to your posts and comments.

Some people say that limiting one's intake of caffeine can help the tinnitus. I'm really not sure, not being a good example of someone staying away from caffeine myself. But you could try not letting her drink caffeineated beverages and see if that makes any difference.

Those whooshing noises and crackles and things are very common. For myself I haven't found anything that really does away with it, other than sometimes rubbing my ear a bit and pulling on the ear lobe, and then trying to ignore it.

Hi. AJWSmith has given you a good explanation and is almost certainly correct.

The people on this site have given you valuable advice, but may i share humbly what I know here . maybe it will help. If your daughter had a severe flew with inflamation in the ears when very young, then the estachean tubes had closed and caused the deafness and the noises. If you want further information, then search the web under "deafness Eustachean tube" or let me know if you want to know more.

I have a Biliteral sensorineural moderate-severe with a severe loss right now and wears hearing aids like Leah LOL

I've expericened that a few times when I'm not wearing them but it goes away when I wear my hearing aid :)
also welcome to alldeaf.

Hi,

First welcome to the forum! As for the noise your daughter hears at bed, could it be simply a case of that she has a little hearing without the hearing aid and hears the noise others, including those that might still be awake are making? Like for instance if she goes to bed before her parents does?

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum. I do have Tinnitus because I think the noises might come from the hearing aid itself.

I was born deaf and did not have my first hearing aid (left ear only) and totally 100% profoundly deaf (right ear) until I was almost 9 years old. I never had Tinnitus before I got my first hearing aid. So that was a puzzle. I really did not like my hearing aid but I had been forced to wear it. I am use to wearing hearing aid and I do hear noises in my head when I am not wearing it. I wish that I had not worn the hearing aid back then so that I don't have to worry about Tinnitus. :(

I hope you enjoy reading and posting all the threads here. See you around here.

leah is not completely deaf she has moderate - severe bilateral hearing loss sensineural ??[/QUOTE As do I although I have a conductive loss. You are well met. We have a lot of parents of dhh kids who post here. Here are some good resources for you!!!
American Society for Deaf Children
https://listserv.kent.edu/cgi-bin/wa.exe?A0=PARENTDEAF-HH
Hands & Voices
In addition, contact your state's Deaf School and see if there's any resources or programs. The Deaf School is SORELY underutilized....and I think you'd be very surprised. Nowadays Deaf Schools/ Deaf Ed are VERY hoh friendly (except in Utah, where the Deaf School consists of oral only and voice off bi bi school with limited resources)

Whoops didn't realize you were in Ireland.
Educational Supports for Deaf Children in Ireland | irish deaf kids
and

Bit of advice.......I was on the About.com site for Irish Deaf resources....it mentioned Deaf units. Look into a Deaf unit if Leah's not already in one. There's only three Deaf Schools in your country?!?! Wow!!!!! And one is just for severe/profound girls and the other one is for boys There is a Day School in Limerick, and it doesn't mention a loss requirement: MID WEST SCHOOL FOR HEARING IMPAIRED CHILDREN
Here is what I could find on education: http://www.kerrydeaf.com/links/index.html (scroll down to where schools are listed)

hi everyone . thank you all so much for taking the time to write back, i really appreciate it. i think what ye have said about this tinitus sounds bang on rightn she doesnt complain bout it every night only occasionally and never in the day when wearing her hearing aids. im worried now that this could mean her hearing loss will get worse. im just so filled with worry and sadness about all of this but ye have all been so nice and its great to for me to see ye all living normal happy lives, i know noone who is deaf and always imagine the worst for her future. deafdyke thank you for taking the time to look up schools in my country , and your right there is little to no facilites for deaf kids here.
zcedarman i will definitly look up abpout that , im constantly searching for the reason and ive never seen that before
again thanks everyone

.It does take time to come to terms with the fact that your child is different.Heck, it took some of us many years to come to terms with being "different"
....BUT always remember that she is still pretty much a kid...she'll be into Hannah Montana and bikes and all sorts of normal kid stuff. Here is an article I wrote on that: Welcome to... A Typical Life?!? (and I have a disability!)
That really sucks that there's only three schools for deaf kids....well four. Jordanstown in Northren Ireland accepts kids from Ireland. It really is kind of odd that there are only three deaf schools, since Ireland is kinda rural. What about the Deaf Units? Or summer camps/summer schools? While some hoh kids may not need Deaf Schools or even deaf units, it's still really nice to know that there are other kids like us out there. I remember when I was a little kid I thought I was the only deaf kid in the UNIVERSE out there.
One really good upside of the CI, is that it's made Deaf schools and deaf culture a lot more hoh friendly.....do not let anyone tell you that hoh kids don't need ISL or other "deaf stuff"

hiya
at the moment leah goes to mainstream school and is doing well. definitly misses out on things but overall doing well . but just like the way you felt she feels like she is the only one in the world whos ears dont work ( thats how she describes herself). i have been told not to teach her sign language as this will make her speech suffer and segregate her further from society, is this wrong should we all learn. i did really want us all to especially just in case her hearing gets worse.
anyway thank you for taking time to help me.

ps

just to add her speech isnt great so i was told to concentrate on this and isl would distract from this.
thanks
