I think Cochlear Brand people are nicer than AB people.

I think after many years of wearing it, I've told that the nerves actually grow around it. I can't think of the right term but think of a tree growing around a barb wires and sometimes it impossible to take it out. But I could be wrong.

I was told by the implant company that the average internal could last up to 20+ years. Even at that, most people will have to be explanted and re-implanted at least once in their life.

I don't think this discussion's healthy.

Definitely! I think this discussion/debate borders on a "My brand is better than your brand" sort of thing, which, invites "one-upping" each other.

Each CI user or parent of a child considering a CI chooses the brand that best fits that person's needs or wants. Like all technology, each brand has it's pros and cons. So, that said, I don't understand why we're even discussing this.

It just boggles my mind the lengths some will go to try and justify their actions.

Yeah, OB, aside from discussing general reliability, application of external components, battery life, customer service regarding the CI, I don't think it is appropriate for us lay people to have these "discussions" about which brand is best because all 3-4 of the manufacturers' devices perform fine (and had to get FCC approval) and no one CI is appreciably superior than another one. All have brought their own unique innovations to the market.

For folks like us to discuss outside the above roughly drawn up parameters leads, inevitably, to irresponsible views/statements and running roughshod over what is highly sensitive and controversial in the first place.

Agreed OB and Iam with u TXGolfer...Coke is better than Pepsi!

That is not what the company themselves say. They guarantee them for 10. No one has been implanted even for 30 years, how could they guess at that?

No knows for sure how long the internal implant part will last or what the future will hold. To say that most people will have to be explanted and re-implanted at least once in their life is a guess and it is not a heathy statement.

It IS a healthy statement. The companies themselves only guareentee the devices for 10 years, which means that it is possible that they may not last any longer than that. But the truth is that they could last as little as one day or as long as 70 years. It is electronics, so they will eventually fail and break down. No one knows how long a device will last, but one MUST accept that a failure is a real, and eventually, probable event.

 I think deaf gal was just having fun with this thread, ribbing some of the folks who've opted for AB.
