I Can Hear!!!

I got a regular HA...I believe it was $800. I did check with VR and other foundations but they always said my ex hubby made too much money and then I went thru the divorce and trying to survive thru grad school so getting HAs became low on my priority list. Now, I have my first one so I have to wait another year to get the 2nd one since I get a new HA every 3 years under my insurance.

$800's cheap for a HA compared to how much Aussies would have to fork out for hearing aids. It'd cost about $3500 for one hearing aid. So consider yourself lucky regarding how much you had paid for the HA. What's the HA brand you've got?

Insurance cover sucks big time when it comes to their policy on hearing aids! Would have better chance of getting them to agree to cover for CI in quite a short time, if I'm not mistaken.

Couldn't they make exception for you on the insurance policy based on the ground that you need another HA of work?

I work with deaf kids and use ASL all day so I dont think my insurance will make an exception for work reasons. :giggle: It is ok..I am not in a hurry to get the other one.

It is not a digital HA..the brand is oticon. I could be wrong about the $800 price tag but I do know it wasnt over a thousand dollars. My insurance paid for it. I paid nothing so it was nice.

Yea, I would have gotten better coverage if I wanted to get a CI but since I have a fear of hospitals and surgery, I wont get one. Also, I dont feel like going to speech therapy again..:giggle:

Oh well, worth a try. :)

Oticon's a good brand from what I hear. It'd cost over 6 grand for that brand over here. The coloured hearing aids they have is awesome. Ahh, it explains why you paid very little for the HA because of its analog feature.

How about going to the audie and ask for a pair of hearing aids for trial purpose? ;)

Aww. Your husband must have to dope you up before hauling you into the hospital for the birth of your boy! :giggle:

Actually, I am waiting for the referral letter from my primary dr to see my audi about digital HAs. I think I will get a trial pair. I tried them in 99 and it was awful but it has been 8 years so I will see how I can handle them. When I tried them in 99 for 1 week, I heard every sound and I didnt like it at all. Freaked me out too much and I couldnt focus very well. Maybe it was cuz I wasnt prepared?

Nah, he didnt have to dope me up..LOL! I was very restless and anxious to get out of the hospital as soon as I walked in and then I developed a serious infection after the birth prolonging my stay. I wanted to scream. Hahaha!

Hope you'll get that trial pair. Yeah, it could be that you were not used to the digital technology back then. It should have improved somewhat nowadays. If you have a problem with that brand then try another brand until you find the one that doesn't emit shrill sounds in your head. It does take some time to get used to hearing multitude of sounds.

At least, HA's a bit softer compared to CI!

Oh dear! Next time, get a yoga instructor to help you meditate or better yet undergo hypnosis before entering hospital. Or I could slip some happy pills in your food ;)

It would be very interesting to see if hypnotism will work on a deaf person or not.

My digital hearing aid... $300.

Nope, it's not used. It's brand new.

If you're a student at NTID/RIT and it's your first time to buy hearing aids from them... they give you a major discount on their hearing aids. They have 3 price ranges... $300, $750, & $1,250.

I haven't had hearing aids since last year summer. I hope get the new ones soon if my health insurance will cover it, I won't expect them to cover 100 percent of it, maybe 60-80 percent, will see. I don't know if they do. They broke and don't work.

13 years is a long time for hearing aids, most average 5 years or so.

Congrats on the new hearing aid.. glad to hear u can HEAR! :giggle: hehe..

I guess you went thru HAE before getting this HA?

When I was at NTID/RIT, I got two new HA after going thru HAE for $50. that's it. That was back in 87. They were Oitcon. They went no good in 92 where I got two new one thru my VR in NY. while I was student at NTID before graduating in 93. They were Phonak which I still have.

HAE?

All I did was walk in and say, "I want to buy a new hearing aid."

Testing, testing, testing. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ahhh. Hello. Yep, your hearing aids and the batteries are working. Whew!

I have two digital hearing aids. The only thing that I hate is the beeps every a few seconds because it warns me that my battery is getting low. I have no control to stop the beeps! gggrrr!

Yes, I can.

If it's a quiet night, I can hear the crickets chirp. I can hear the fan running from my computer tower. If a car drives by outside and the window is open, I can hear it.

what kind of digital hearing aids did you get?? as I'm planning to get my new digital hearing aids but not the same kind i've been using as I find it abit annoying especially with some sounds it'll shuts down.. grr..

Well, my hearing aids are Davinci PxP Starkey. They are pretty good. I cannot afford to buy the Widex, and I love the Widex - it cost $3,000 per hearing aid. Now, all digital hearing aids have the damn beeps. What a dope hearing aid companies!

I have win 112 bernafon btes. They too have beeps and I like it cuz beeps warn me before batteries die and I could have some time to replace them.

Ahh they changed the way one pay for it.
It goes like this...

Before you make an appointment, you have to have a recent hearing test done. If it's not recent, they will do another one. I think it has to be within 6 months or something. You also need a good ear mold, which also has to be done every 6 months or so.

Once that's done, you're ready to make an appointment for your hearing aid fitting. It's a 6-session thing... each being 1 hour long (or less)... and spans at least 3 weeks (twice a week or less). The appointment costs $300. If you miss your appointment, you lose your $300.

At each appointment, you will be given a hearing aid to try on. They will fit it and then have you sign a form saying it's a "loaner" for a few weeks. When you return for the next appointment, you and your audiologist will review your past experience with that hearing aid you just wore and determine if any changes need to be made. They may fit you with a different hearing aid instead. When the 6 sessions are done, a final hearing aid will be decided and that $300 deposit you made will be applied towards that hearing aid. If that hearing aid is $300, then you're set and free to go. If it's more, you pay the difference. :)
