I Can Hear!!!

If you're referring to the weird electronic noise, it's probably cuz your hearing aid was in 'T' mode.

The old hearing aid I had for over 13 years had a small glitch. Originally, it has a volume control, a power switch, and a switch that alternates between 'M' mode, 'T' mode, and 'MT' mode. (M being microphone, normal; T being telephone, picks up electronic signals)

The first 5 years, it worked perfectly fine. As the years went by, the volume control would mess up a bit. Before, it was a smooth control like 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9. Later, it wasn't smooth like 1...4...7...9. Yep, it didn't just increase. It would be on level 1. When I turn it up, there's no sound, then it's level 4 then no sound then level 7. Not smooth, eh?

The last few years were messed up. The 'T' mode no longer worked. Sometimes, it would randomly switch to 'MT' mode without me knowing and I would pick up electronic signals from security systems or nearby cell phones. Ugh!

no, white noise in general... I wouldnt have it in telephone mode for years, dude. :P but damn that's gotta suck for you.

*signing to you*...now now, you didn't 'hear' me. :giggle:

Kidding aside, that's great and hope you'll really enjoy the change! Wtg-- ;)

:whispering in Vampy's ear: Okay, now tell me what did I say?...

Congrats :D Good for you.

What brand and model is your hearing aid ? I too switched to two digital aids from one old analog hearing aid in August of last year :) There is a huge difference as you said in this thread. I can hear much better with my digitals .

Enjoy your new world of sounds

It's a Siemens.

Thanks, everyone!

It was awkward all day.

When I first put on my hearing aid, the audiologist told me to be prepared as she turned it on with the computer. *click* She then asked me if I could her her. I said, "yes". She then asked if it was loud enough. I said, "I don't know. It's been 4 months since I've heard anything. So, I've forgotten what 'loud' is." She understood.

When I was done, a friend picked me up for ride out to a nature trail. When we got there, all I could hear was the sounds of my friend carrying her keys, the sounds of the birds and wind, the sound of my friend and my feet walking on the gravel, the sound of people talking yards away, it was almost overwhelming.

It will probably be a few days before I'm used to it. :)

Fascinating. It seems like you hear pretty normally with this hearing aid.

I wonder if I need to get my hearing checked. I wouldn't get an aid (right now) as I hear okay I think, but I was getting my car washed Saturday, and the woman on the outside of my car said:

"Is it a new truck?"

I said, "What?"

"Is it a new truck?"

I rolled down the window. "Say again?"

"Is it a new truck?"

I leaned over. "Is it a new what?" I'm thinking--I have a car, not a truck.

She said: "Is it in neutral?!"

Oh.... "Um.. yeah, it is. Sorry." I felt goofy. :)

Okay, Guess my hearing is okay...

I took a little online test... (probably not as accurate as a real one)

I seem to be MOSTLY normal. I guess. Anyone know how to read these things? :D

Congrats on being able to hear again!!

I went for 5 years without HAs cuz moine broke and I didn't have the money to buy new ones. When I finally got a job with insurance that wud pay for it, I got my first HA...was overwhelming at first and I got a lot of headaches at first. I thought it was due to my age but I stuck with it. Now, it has been 2 years and I am used to it. Nope, don't hear speech but it is nice to hear things happening around me anmd iam happy with that. Don't need more.

Hope u will get used to your HAs. :)

Hahaha...

When I was in high school, I was working at a local grocery store. A woman asked me where a specific item was. She wasn't speaking clear, so I asked her to repeat. She told me again, and I finally understood. She then asked me what country I was from. I asked why. She said that I didn't understand her English and assumed I was a foreigner.

Haha, reminds me of the time I met a lady who worked in the floral dept at the grocery store who though I was a foreigner. Apparently I speak with a Norwegian accent and I've never been there!

You said that occurred at car wash, sounds like some sounds in "in neutral" was washed by background noise coming from car wash? :D funny dialog though...

yes you have normal hearing you are in 0-20 range

see this audiogram;
Phonak hearing systems - Audiogram

Yeah, my guess is that the sound of the carwash was overwhelming what she was saying, you're right. But sometimes I notice I ask people to repeat themselves here and there, and I find that I have learned to rely on captions somewhat, for not missing things. But part of that may be that captions let you read just about everything whereas an actor may be deliberately a bit soft to portray a mood and one might not hear them on purpose. I have friends who are distracted by captions and if my brother isn't around asks me to turn them off, which I do but would rather not. (And one of these friends is losing his hearing in one ear due to an inner ear disease so he, of all people, should get used to 'em.)

How expensive are they, Shel? There's not some foundation that might help with that?

I got a regular HA...I believe it was $800. I did check with VR and other foundations but they always said my ex hubby made too much money and then I went thru the divorce and trying to survive thru grad school so getting HAs became low on my priority list. Now, I have my first one so I have to wait another year to get the 2nd one since I get a new HA every 3 years under my insurance.
