Hurricane Season Officially Begins Today !

Keep an eye on the storm, but I think it's safe to say it won't be a hurricane. Last I heard, it was either going to dissipate, or worst case scenerio, be a weak tropical storm when it came ashore. I'd be prepared for power outages and what not, but I wouldn't sweat this one TOO MUCH.

It's a good wake up call for those who need to get prepared, though. Because later on in the season, we'll need to be on our toes!

Hang in there! Only 5 more mos til the end of the season! :ugh2:

So true that it is best to be prepared than be sorry. I also don't think Alberto will be a bad one but never know. I am in Central Florida and right now it is getting very cloudy with looks of some rain coming down. I see you are also in Florida. You hang in there too :)

Hi Oceanbreeze,

Sometimes the t.v. weatherman can be wrong, he thought 5 hurricanes this season and it turns out there were 8 hurricanes this season. I treat all hurricanes no matter, how strong or weak as a very dangerous event. It always helps alots to be very prepared with emergency water, food, blanket and plenty of ammo to stop the looters etc. My prayers are with all of you guys living in a hurricane zone. God Bless .....

True. BE PREPARED for anything, but what I was saying to ButterflyGirl is, don't panic! Just be prepared for anything, but listen to what your weather person is saying. It's true. They have gotten it wrong before, but it's better to listen than it is to not listen.

Those of us who've had experience with these storms knows what to expect, and that is the unexpected! Case in point: One of the storms last season that hit our area, I can't recall which one, was NOT supposed to affect US. It was supposed to cause headaches for Miami-Dade, but we were only supposed to get some rain and wind out of it. BUT... the storm tracked further south than expected, and we were dealing with a LOT more than "just alittle rain and some winds". Was it a major hurricane? No, it wasn't. But, a category 1 hurricane is no picnic, either. Especially, when you're NOT prepared for it.

We learmed our lesson.

Anyway, so yes, I agree with you. But, I was just trying to express upon BG not to panic. More often than not, the weather guys are wrong the OTHER WAY, and what is thought to become a big deal DOESN'T pan out that way.

And, your point is.... ??????????

Cockroaches carry diseases. A house is never clean or free of them once they move in. Give me a blizzard anyday, as those bugs can't survive in cold weather.

We prefer to call them "Palmetto bugs". :D

Tired of hurricane? then moving to CA or most islands of Hawaii that has no hurricane but Hawaii (except in Oahu, Maui and Big Island) got hurricane at once in 1992.

If need help then PM to Javapride then she can help you. :)

Uh, no thanks.

I am happy where I am, thank you!

Same with me!

By the way, TrippLA, there are some other natural disasters everywhere else so hurricanes are not the only ones :)

People around here don't seem to act like cockroaches are a big deal. But people in MN do make a big deal about it.

I would NOT want to live in California. I am very frightened of earthquakes. I mean, you do not get any warning when a earthquake occurs. What if I am sleeping when it happens? That's scary.

What about the Hawaiian Typhoons and the rainy monsoons ? My granddaddy remembers fighting in the Pacific in WW 2 and there were typhoons and violent rainstorms as he went hopping on island after island fighting the Japs in WW 2. I am sure Hawaii gets typhoons and violent rainstorms.

Yes it is not good to panic but to be prepared, yes alittle concerned. Listen to what your guts say and prepare ahead of time if possible.

Hawaii is too expensive to live in.

I almost moved to Hawaii at one point because my older cousins there wanted to take me in (I was in foster care at the time) but the courts didn't allow it. :(

Nah, Typoons is only happened in Japan and rest of Southeast Asia but Hawaii has hurricanes, it happened at few time in 1959, 1982 and again 1992. In 1992, it's called Hurricane Iniki, it was occured in Kauai Island also it happened at same island in 1959 and 1982. No hurricanes are hit in Honolulu, rest of Oahu, Maui and Big Island. I wouldn't live in Kauai Island because it hard to escape to other island. Eastern Pacific Ocean have hurricanes, opposite from typoons in Western Pacific Ocean but hurricanes in Pacific Ocean are just playing around water, several hit in west coastal of Mexico and Baja California, rare to hit in Hawaii and extremely rare to hit in California. California haven't got hurricane since 1858 after hit in San Diego, when about 8 years after became statehood.

Earthquake isn't good reason for not live in this state but we got last earthquake in 1994 on MLK Day, it called Northridge Earthquake and others are occured in 1933 in Long Beach and 1971 in San Fernando Valley. California is #1 largest state in USA for population and many people don't care about earthquake and they provide manual about earthquake safety. Earthquake seems painful, it can make freeway collasped, road cracked and we cannot drive about up to one year after rebuild the new freeway. Also, it make buildings are gonna fall down on underground parking and stomped on cars then auto insurance would spent alot of money to people for buy other cars after cars are totaled, and some buildings are destroyed or cracked down. Of course, earthquake is happened in rest of west coast.

Earthquake isn't occured in SF since 1989, but it started in 1906 and again in 1989, also it hadn't got earthquake about 86 years until 1989. Only big factors about old viaduct was collasped then many people cannot drive and only drive on special direction until completely rebuilt in around late 90's but bridge that connected from SF to Oakland had been fixed in about almost 1 years.

Wow, really? If you are from USA then you have rights to moving to anywhere what you want. What happened with court? also you have rights to live with immediate families and supposed not to get permission from courts. Not all part of Hawaii is expensive, just depends on what place to live but you wouldn't susprised that Hawaii have alot of government housings to treat people that who are low income, like work at low wage. Handicapped person can get short wait list then get in so quickly but wait list in Hawaii aren't long as in NYC, LA and Chicago. I will rather to live in managed apartment over government housing because it's more clean and good maintenance. Many managed apartments in expensive cities (like LA, SF, Miami, Honolulu and even more) have rent control and some provide market rate but market rate is limited. Hawaii isn't expensive but gas prices are expensive as in CA but cheaper than in Vancouver, grocery are so-so, little more costly than in California and Florida. People is just don't know how to use wise with money and javapride helped me alot.

I just enjoy to help you but it's your decide. :)
