How to pick out the best laptop for someone?

Do you mean Llano? If it's not at Best Buy, she won't buy it.

Could it be Lenovo? I have had good service from an R60 ThinkPad by them that I bought back in May of 2007 (That was just after they had purchased from IBM and some things came with IBM & their logo on and other were labeled Lenovo).

Just checked using the link you provided and searching on that site for Lenovo laptop. They do have them. I have lost track of which of their lines of laptops are considered the best though.

You may have to purchase and install Works but it is still around.

And thanks for the update; I was hoping you would let us know how the search turned out. I am looking for another update at least as she makes her final decision.

We'll probably go to Best Buy next week and let her take a test drive on the laptops first. I let her try mine last night but it's a MacBookPro 13". She wants HP, and a larger screen. But at least she got to try the feel of the keyboard on my Mac. When we go to Best Buy, she'll be able to compare the sizes better.

Isn't HP getting out of the computer aspect of the business?

no its not levono. a liano is a new apu (processor/gpu combined.

no. hp closed the tablet thats it.

From what I know, HP wants to exit the PC industry. Their market share in the PC industry haven't rose much for a while. Same with Dell and many other brands.

So far, Apple is the one with the strongest PC growth, so I wouldn't say it's the PC industry that is the problem, it's the companies like HP, Dell and the others who are not getting it right.

i read about hp dont making tablet anymore since it had a problem so they are gonna clear the stock out of tablet at "clearance" sale. so they will still make laptop and pc.

I Google searched liano and got nothing related to laptops.

he's talking about amd's llano process. Dunno why an i instead of l, probably a typo. Personally, I don't like speculating future technologies and how they will blow things out of the water, so I'll leave it at that.

Best piece of advice I have for finding a laptop for someone: Start with your price, they need to have a set amount in mind they are willing to spend. If they're just going to fluctuate around without a set price in mind, that is what makes it hard.

I agree.
But what about buying a laptop from a computer repair shop? They look like good deals when you compare prices from stores.

It's a Spanish word for grassy plain. Two l's, pronounced like a y, like llama, the animal.

She's old school. Every appliance and electronics have to be brand names, new, from local big box stores, with extended warranties. She's an older lady and worries that there will be something wrong with each thing she buys, so she wants it to be easy to return to the store.

Not according to what I have been reading. It sounds like they are doing what IBM did a few years ago. HP have made it clear, they want to stop making desktop and laptop computers along with the tablets. They want to shift their focus on cloud computing and webOS. HP's profit margins is not where they want it to be, so it's hardly surprising that they are looking to getting out of the hardware business.

Now that HP is exiting the PC industry, it seems the only giants left are Apple and Dell. Right now, Apple is seeing a significant growth while Dell isn't. So I wouldn't be surprised if Dell is the next one to throw in the towel.
