How safe do you think any schools and college campuses are in America?

My son's friend, Joe was imming to my son. Joe was in the dorm at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. He heard big loud with students scream and bang. Joe was in the shower, he ran to the window to see what was going on. Joe did not understand why the students ran out of the campus. Some students panicked and jumped out of the windows. Joe saw the blood was all over in the bodies wounded themselves. He was shaking and freaking out. Alot of police, SWAT and guard came to that campus. Glad, Joe was okay but he was shaking since 9:15 am to last night. My son gave him alot of support. It was traumatic experience for him. There were no public warnings on campus after the first burst of gunfire around 8 in the morning.

My son and I were discussed how can we be safe in anywhere else nowadays? Remember, Columbine High School shootings near Littleton, Colo., in 1999, two teenagers killed 12 fellow students and a teacher. Two gunmen killed themselves before taking their own lives.

How awful....you can't feel safe anywhere these days ??

We will be seeing Joe in New Jersey in the summertime. He will share the story with us what he saw at that campus.

After VA Tech's incident, now I starting little not feel safe cuz I dont trust DPS (Department of Public Safety, security campus at Gallaudet), will they keep alert? take serious? keep pace? DPS always take their time, walk, sometime not take serious... There also were incident, one staff member was beat up by stranger in Fieldhouse last Sunday, what did DPS do? nothing do! DPS should ask any people for ID when they entering Gallaudet campus on front main enterance... Now I am starting concern abt DPS' "performance"

Oh my gosh... Did you report to Department Board of Education in D.C. area about poor performance in their jobs?

My son's friend Joe was really pissed off because there were no warning annoucement on the speaker or light flasher in the dorm building while he was in the shower right after 9am in VA Tech Community. Joe did not know about the shooting on that campus. It was awful experience for him.

It starts with family and social life. How people grew up. You don't always notice a storm brewing within someone when they need help and thusly they finally snap. Say this one kid was teased by everyone and not liked, his parents are struggling and he feels trapped. The mind will rapidly look for possiblities, since the kids probably angry and hurt, confused even all reason will go out the door and he'd consider things like that. Since it's been done it gives other people ideas. I am NOT a psychologist, what I am however is someone who has studied peoples minds, watched them how they work, in some ways people are predictable, in others they are not.

People have their own problems, for teachers to pick up on tale-tale signs that a student might go mad and commit such act, its hard in large classrooms. Small classrooms even. Do you know how many girls in this day and age cut themselves? Some do it on their wrists, some do it on places they can hide, hips, arms, palms, legs. There's so many distrubed people that need help. What can I say, the only idea I can think of is a routine psychological examination every 1 week for every student. This would be an extreme safeguard, some people can mask it others can't however. Metal detectors, would you feel safe if there was metal detectors? Public and possibly private schools will soon become a soft-walled prison.

Home schooling? It's not always the best, it helps sure but the kid won't really be social, probably won't have friends unless said kid goes out alot. It won't really be the same. I think it's time for america to change it's ways for education also they need to make better gun laws, not to restruct people from buying certian guns but a better screening system to check people WHO purchase guns. Make more strict requirments like a psychological examination every 1 month or something if they own guns.. I don't know, somethin tells me a huge civil war is going to break out in a couple years. Maybe 1 year, maybe 5 years, maybe 30 years from now if nothing changes but it will happen.

Look at the president what he's doing to the country, the form of government sucks. Our laws don't grant us sernity, nothing is 100% perfect but the laws are more like 30%-50% effective. Before richard nixon, the government seemed trustworthy and assumingly there was probably more order. Now you got all this crazy stuff from vietnam, the government lying, conspiracies and crap. As much as the next person, I'd really love to know how to change it all for better, but theres people that prefer to live in a despicable sort of lifestyle rob, plunder and all that.. Eh so many problems. This school shooting is just the tip of the ice berg. I don't mean to jack the thread so just read my opinions and ignore discussing them unless they relate to the thread, focus on the main topic please ^^

I remember, the parents had a meeting at high school few years ago with my sons. We were discussed about respect other students for who they are. No racist No make fun of them No mock No favoristim from teachers or coaches, etc... Everytime a new student came in new school from other state of town. Students mock on new students, their self-esteem confidence become going down the hill. It can lead themselves furious and snap to hurt other students. Build up their angry and frustrate inside their feelings. Young kids have the guns from hunting deer, etc... Selling the guns on the street.

Many students said that they wouldn't want to feel like their school was a prison, where surveillance cameras and metal detectors were everywhere at the schools and college campuses.

How can we protect our future children and grandchildren going to school nowadays? :(

We need to educational the kids to respect other kids for who they are. If they do not like them, just ignore and walk away. Avoid angry, jealous and hateful each other.

it has nothing with certain school and college, it's people who cause someone turn dark and depression and it was always unexcept for them to decide and kill. Or pose by hilter and obey.

Ouch!!! DPS looks like fake police.

Have you talked to president at Gally about what happen with them?

Schools should come up with a safety plan, when something like this occur, What about securities? They also need to work on establish communication between students. Also, how about some special training for confrontational situations, if a gun person walked in the school, how to handle it, how to protect themselves? And, Schools also need to discuss about violence along with the students.

What went wrong with VA tech college is that students were not allow to leave the area immediately, and that's outraged. School officials should have done their best to assure the students safety. It's sad. :(

Some things needs to be change, schools aren't safe anymore unless there's changes being made for a better safety plan.

In our society the fact is we have MILLIONS of people here... with Mental Illness, millions who are on anti-deppresants, illegal drugs, alcohol abuse, the list goes on and on the supply of guns and access to weapons from the internet.

There is no safely anywhere else. This government has done a horrible job at protecting us from anything. It's sad when children cannot even go to school safely. No one has ever protected their property from a home invasion just because they have a gun. Most of them happen when no one is home. NO MORE GUNS FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!

If guns are banned then most people will use knife or other weapon (such as hanger, pole, hammer, chainsaw or whatever) to kill or use fire up the building.

Just like caveman threw a rock at the head. *knock out* Everywhere else impossible to be safely for us.

We can't stay in the closet 24/7. Our life is short ! We can enjoy ourselves as much as we can.

The person who planned and executed the shootings on campus was a very disturbed individual. Unfortunately, when we design security, we approach it from a standpoint of what would prevent or protect from someone who is sane and thinks logically. Someone like this guy wasn't thinkinging normally, and he didn't do what normal people do. It is very difficult to plan for something so unexpected. Judging from the number of people he killed, he was very determined, and I doubt that increased security would have prevented it.

Ofc, many students always call them fake police included myself when I was student at MSSD... I am sure students did appeal to anyone abt DPS

Yea, I am surprised VA Tech's president didnt even warning to all community after first shooting fire and president finally did warning to all community around 950 am after second shooting fire...

It would be very hard to get rid of the guns in this world. We can't ban the guns, due to 2nd Amendent. It says, "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" which I support. I have about 20 guns in my house. Texas sure does has a lot of freedom for the gun control.

Back to this topic, no, I don't feel safe whenever I go to the college but I do keep watch out on the students' hands ALWAYS. My college does have one or two armed police officers, tho.

Today, I went to College class.. I felt that umm Wow,,,, I never knew if someone in my class will try do that? Ugh We did talk about it and Interesting that.

Want tells everyone students, Prof, other.. If something follow with gun.. Please go down lay the ground with under desk, chair.

Because They believe that They were a panic and stand then try run but probably caught the shots!

Peace :)

You want to take away our right to bear arms? Be my guest. Little good it's going to do with the actual problem. The root isn't the guns, its the kids and nowadays kids know how to make pipe bombs with ease, then you got knives, shivs, pointy sticks, baseball bats. Anything can be considered a weapon. Take away 1 weapon they will replace it with 2-3 other weapons. People have survived more gunshot wounds than knife wounds according to an article I read on self defense of a knife vs gun situation.

Taking away guns will stiffle the problem because it removes easy access to it, but it won't help the kids at all, theyll still be suffering inside probably. Issues like this NEVER have simple solutions, infact they often require a lesser of an evil to solve. Even if you or I came up with the most excellent idea to prevent it from happening, what power have we to be heard and get the word out? That's what you need, a voice that will be heard and people willing to listen and support the case.

FIRST OF ALL, I AM VERY SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT USA AND THINKING OF VIRGINIAN PEOPLE.

AT MY DAUGHTER'S SCHOOL, WE PARENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO WALK IN THEIR CLASSROOM OR VISIT THEM AT PLAY LUNCH WITHOUT MAKING AN APPOINTMENT WITH TEACHERS FIRST. ALSO WE PARENTS ARE FORBID TO ENTER INSIDE THE SCHOOL TO WAIT TO PICK UP THEIR PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN, ONLY OUTSIDE FOR SAFETY REASON. I REMEMBER IT WAS CHANGED SINCE PORT ARTHUR SHOOTING IN 1996.

TO OWN A GUN IN AUSTRALIA IS VERY VERY TOUGH AND NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE.

Howard decries U.S. 'gun culture'
POSTED: 2:41 a.m. EDT, April 17, 2007

SYDNEY, Australia (Reuters) -- Australian Prime Minister John Howard
on Tuesday decried the negative "gun culture" in America after the
deadly shooting spree at a U.S. university, holding up tough gun laws
in his own country as the answer.

Howard introduced strict gun-ownership laws after the shooting
massacre of 35 people in the southern island state of Tasmania in
1996.

"We had a terrible incident at Port Arthur, but it is the case that 11
years ago we took action to limit the availability of guns," said
Howard, who extended his sympathies to the families of the 32 people
killed at Virginia Tech university on Monday at the hands of what he
described as "a crazed gunman."

"We showed a national resolve that the gun culture that is such a
negative in the United States would never become a negative in our
country."

In 1996 a gunman with a semi-automatic rifle killed 35 people at Port
Arthur in Australia's worst modern-day shooting massacre.

The horror of that massacre prompted Howard to confront Australia's
gun lobby and imposed laws banning almost all types of semi-automatic
weapons.

The government spent A$300 million ($250 million) buying more than
600,000 weapons from farmers, hunters and other members of the public
before the new laws took hold.

But Howard told reporters: "You can never guarantee these things won't
happen again in our country."

More than 30,000 people die from gunshot wounds in the United States
every year and there are more guns in private hands than in any other
country. But a powerful gun lobby and support for gun-ownership rights
have largely thwarted attempts to tighten controls.

Australia's small Greens party called on Tuesday for a further review
of the nation's gun control laws, saying the latest U.S. shooting
involved a multiple-shot pistol and there were an estimated 250,000
handguns in Australia.

"We really need to go back and look at the laws in Australia which
permit handguns to be available, and that includes handguns with up to
10 bullets in the magazine," Greens Senator Bob Brown told reporters.

"We Greens are saying let's remove the potential, as far as we can,
for a repeat massacre by somebody wielding a multiple-shot handgun,"
he said.
