I was just wondering about that. Also, do you look at the word "disabled" in a negative way like we deafies do? What about the word "lessabled"?

A friend of mine is in a wheelchair but it broke and doesn't want to work. It's supposed to be a "powered" wheelchair. It's kind of old and he needs a replacement. Know of a good and reputable site where he can order a new one?

oh man This is USA and there are thousands of retailers.. I don't know which one eh sorry so ask other who owns one.

Hi Alex,

I am using a power wheelchair, what's your friend's chair model or if your friend have a internet access?, I will prvmsg you for the web addy.

I'm in a manual chair...AND ladies are admiring my biceps..:naughty: :laugh2:

^^Sorry...but I just had to complete his line-- :D

Anyhow, terrible that your friend's wheelchair isn't doing what it's made to do anymore...hopefully he'll find another one and even better whereas he'll really appreciate and being more convient to get around in. ;)

Mr.NaughtyRoadRunner! :giggle:

There are those scooters they sell on television. Your friend might be eligible for a free scooter. ;)

I can walk with my own 2 feet...but my daughter gets to ride on a power wheelchair at a young age (3 years old) . I dont know what kind it is until I get to see it in person when I get my daughter from the ex wife. I've seen pics and whoooa damn it is purple all over with her name sewn on the seat cushion.

Im no expert in wheelchairs, but being expert in Fords is another story... That reminds me one thing I gotta get rid of my sports car ZX2 for either a cheap-o used Exploder, Crown Victoria or a Buick Roadmaster wagon to carry my daughter's 100-lb heavy wheelchair around.. Plus I really dont even like to drive around in a full-size or mini van ..fugget it!

I have tried to get a power chair or scooter but medicaid refused to pay for it...I need one because I cannot walk very far, and I end up having to rent a crappy manual chair at places like Six Flags or Sea world where there is a LOT of walking around, all day long, I can't walk that much due to hip dysplasia, and manual chairs are very difficult for me to get around in on my own, my fiance has to push me around, and sometimes the terrain makes it difficult for him to push me around. Even just walking around the mall or walmart has began to get painful for me as of late. :/ I prefer to walk but I cannot walk for long. I had a manual chair before but don't have it anymore, and it wasn't real good anyway.

Hi Lucia,
It's a pity that Medicaid won't pay for what you need. Isn't it possible they'd cover for joint replacement operation?

Perhaps you could get a wheelchair or a scooter if they'll agree to an installment plan?

Lucia,

This might help you. Give them a call - can't hurt.

Yes, I think medicaid would cover the hip replacements, but I'm not sure I want to go through that. The recovery is going to be pretty rough and possibly long, I have already gone through that kind of thing twice as a very small child (2 surgeries). It was very rough on me. The CI surgery was a walk in the park compared to this.

You may be right that hip replacement surgery won't be a walk in the park, but if one has to pick between a lifetime with pain or a release from pain, but have to go through additional pain to be free from it. I'd opt for the latter because you get to have longer time living without pain, and no limitation from walking etc.

I think it'd be easier for women with hip dysplasia to go through this procedure before having kids.

I'm a wheelchair user (among other disabilities). I consider disabled a positive term; lessabled is just patronizing.

He should talk to his doctor. If he has insurance, they may cover a few grand of the cost as "durable medical equipment", but they'll only do that with a prescription. The company he buys it from will often help talk to the insurance company about it. As far as where to get one, it tends to be a good idea to find a local dealer and try it before you purchase, but Amigo Mobility sells chairs online, I think. (I use an Amigo, and have for 10 years, but am not otherwise associated with the company.)

Hi Alex,

Good question! What you will find is that some ride their chairs with pride and some ride their chairs in shame. Some like to talk about it and some prefer to ignore the chair part of them. Some are in their chairs by accident and some got there due to health reasons. Some are even in chairs because they want to be. So the answers to your questions are very complex and depend a great deal on their circumstances, their attitudes, their family and friends, etc.

Here is a quadraplegic (a.k.a. "quad") that didn't let a "little" accident slow him down:

He rides his powerchair into his van, locks it down where the driver's seat used to be and then "drives by wire" to wherever he wants to go.

For me, the word "disability" means my new Do It Sitting ABILITY! Is life perfect without its ups and downs? Just like everyone's life, the answer is no. Do I wish I could jump out of my chair and chase my grandkids in the yard? Sure. But God has allowed me to be in a chair and I just use my new ability to encourage others that their lives are not over. Another quad that I know down in Alabama goes skydiving!

Or how about shooting a gun?

Of course, this guy is having a LOT of fun!

I could go on and on and show some videos of other "wheelers" doing stunts with a manual chair in a skateboard park or jumping off ramps in a powerchair at 8 miles per hour.

It's all how you want to spend the rest of your life!

What about the word "lessabled"?

I've heard "Different Abilities" and many others. The truth is, for some of us wheelers, we are MORE abled than some "walkies" that I know. :giggle:

The answer to this is sort of complicated and drawn out. If I may, I would suggest that your friend visit "Wheelchair Junkie" (WCJ) which has a ton of information and if they want to join, look me up over there. I use the same screen name.

WheelchairJunkie.com

If you or anyone has questions, feel free to ask here, in a PM or even over on WCJ. Just like AD with hearies and Deafies, WCJ has walkies and Wheelies. :ty: LOL

Given more information about your friend's situation, location, disability, chair model, etc.; I could probably give them some good referals, more information and tips. That is also available en-mass over at Wheelchair Junkie.

Thanks for bringing up this topic, Alex, and allowing me to share some tidbits of information.

Dave

^^Nice post...cool and interesting. Now, where is your 'do it sitting Ability' pix??? :D

Thanks for sharing some of these photos and the abilities wheelchair bound folks can do and accomplish. ;)
