How do cochlear implants and effect acceptance into the Deaf culture?

And I disagree. The ones complaining about lack of acceptance of Deaf culture are the very ones whose attitude prevent that acceptance. It is not a fault of Deaf culture, it is a lack of cultural sensitivity and an attitude of superiority from those asking to be accepted.

I don't think one can honestly blame just the CIer every time this happens or even groups as a whole. There are idiots and jerks in every group who let down their group by their individual behaviour. The actual fault when this sort of situation occurs comes down to the individual personalities involved and additional factors such as lack of information, fears etc.

So sometimes it might be the CIer or it might be the non implanted ex friends. It depends.

okay so i'm understanding the issues on CI's more but I'm confused about the hearing aids.. are they more accepted at the moment?.. how do deaf people feel about those with hearing aids as opposed to those with a CI, if there is a difference.

I think the distinction that most people make is that one involves surgery and the other does not. Although, that might change as they are starting to trial implantable hearing aids for the deaf market.

I understand that when hearing aids first came out in the 1940s or so they were controversial, not unlike CIs today. So perhaps CIs will eventually become less contentious as time goes on.

Glad to make u laugh but honestly, I am still  If the poster said hearing posters, then I would understand but to deaf posters? Not a big deal anyway.

Had she complained she was nasty vs some hearing poster, she's have a much better case vs Jillio. I was like WHUT? when I saw that post.

Your thing is that all deaf people must sign, why is that can't you accept that some deaf people do not want to sign.
No, sorry that's incorrect. Shel simply thinks that ALL dhh kids should have the option for a full communication toolbox. If they chose ON THEIR OWN, not to sign (despite being exposed to ASL and Deaf Culture).....that's AWESOME. But what YOU don't realize, is that almost ALL so called "oral" kids, never had that choice in the first place. They are oral by FORCE, not by CHOICE!!!! They never had the option of Sign.

There you go again. Discounting the experiences of deaf people based on your won ethnocentric persective.

Yes, thank you for proving my point. Even though at least two deaf people agree that you are nasty to hearing people, my disagreeing with them that your nastiness is not limited to hearing people but extends to both hearing and deaf people is "discounting" the deaf experience.

Now, thank you for the laugh!

Perhaps you could cite a case of when Jillio was nasty to other deaf posters? I don't recall any such post.

Most of the time she isn't nasty to the hearing posters but when one of the hearing posters is being a bit blind - no let me rephrase that- a bit deaf to other deaf people's input, she can get that way. I'm surprised more of us haven't lost our tempers with some hearing here. They can be a bit dense at times.

I agree. I didn't mean to imply that it was an across the board explanation.

And the deaf posters have also agreed that I am not nasty to the deaf posters. Since you have made this accusation, I expect that you will support it. And, yes, you are discounting their experience when you claim that they are wrong in their belief.

I'm glad you find yourself humorous. Shame no one else does.

I agree about some hearing people here being dense here and having to keep my cool with them.

Now, this doesnt make sense.

Ok if any of it will help you remember, name's Amy, former member of DTQ (deaf teen quest)
went to NWCCD from year 1994 to 2006. Long time ago when Ogo (phone) came out I was at Aaron (tall man) house I brought Ogo and show it to everyone including you, you brought your guy friend with mole on his cheek.
We were roomate in dorm once in nwccd.
Umm.....

Who are you? I don't even know you...the only girl I remember that achually wears red glasses is named Cary Shore and the last time I saw her was when I was in Elementry school.

I'm sorry if I have said that...but I honestly don't remember saying that or know who you are. Must be a long a$$ time ago....

Besides I have changed for better...less judgemental.

Most people don't see my CI because most of the time my hair is covering it.

Yeah.. You do an excellent job of staying cool.

I must confess that I lost my temper with Loml once.

I'd venture to say that I am way ahead of all of you in loosing my temper with the hearing posters.:giggle:BTW, thanks for the support!

For starters, go back and review her posts to Fuzzy. and it has nothing to do with being a "bit deaf" as opposed to someone having the audacity to have an opinion or view that differs from her's.

As for people being "dense" well that's your term, not mine, but buddy boy the gate swings both ways if you know what I mean.

And sometimes, the deaf/Deaf community rejects those that don't even have a CI. But then, those type of people ar usually rejected everywhere they go!:giggle:

What's so funny about such a sad statement ?

I'm afraid that Audio prolly has problems with people as it's clear from her posts that she didn't understand understand how you phrase words can affect how others react to you. I would think that'd have an impact on her social life.

I don't think you were nasty to her but you did have (and so did others) to point out to her that some things are better phrased a bit differently.

As for posters who think she had problems with us because she had a different view from the majority of us, I should point out that there are two other deaf posters who are mostly oral in this forum who've never had any trouble with us because they've always respected our views even when they disagree with the majority. Nor did they try to force their views on us.
