How are you Affected by the Economy?

Dixie,

Is the company you are working for right now the one that just got fined $10 million in fines for illegal immigrant hires and whose CEO that just got arrested for "promoting" immigrant hire fraud? Or is it ConAgra? I can't remmy which company but it was in the news recently.

Shel, DON'T be feeling guilty about your hubby possibly making more money. He worked hard to get where he is at, and going for better jobs. So when he gets that job--go out to dinner and celebrate! He deserves this. I don't know what he does for a living.....? Everyone's time will come at all different points in life.

After a year trying to land good festivals, I finally landed a GOOD four day medieval festival for November--we built a good rep that we got in without a menu, $$$ and photos. I have NOT met the director yet! The director is pushing all deadlines to have us in so we could build a permanent business relationship in Sarasota County. So I'm busting my butt to make sure we do well----including paying a surprise health inspection fee of $102 but it will be well worth it. I also have to get my guy and the booth outfitted in 'medieval' attaire to make a good impression. Never mind catering my first wedding next Saturday. The Bride finally ate our crepes last weekend! She booked us without eating our crepes or asking our prices. Crazy but it will work out just fine then I can start advertising ourselves as a wedding caterer.

The moral to this, if anyone keeps working hard to get where they want to be, then they deserve the good things, including $20K increase in pay. You Go!

Thanks! :) My hubby is a policy analyst for Federal Govt at the Pentagon.

Wow, many are affected. Macian, dont feel guilty that you are doing well when many are not. I wouldnt wish for anyone to suffer. My husband just finished 2 job interviews and will have one more. If he gets any of those jobs, it will be a 20K increase in his salary so I had mixed feelings that day I found out about my dad. It was the day that my hubby had one of his interviews...I was happy and excited for him but then I got the news about my dad so it was like a huge roller coaster drop. If my hubby gets one of the jobs, I probably will feel a little guilty for doing better than so many of my friends.

My friend told me yesterday that her friend's heater is not working and they cant afford to fix it. They have 3 children and they live in PA. I asked her what are they going to do. She said she doesnt know but they have been freezing inside their home for the past two weeks.

oh thats sad shel, sint anyone able to help them without interfearing, or making them eel like its a charity, i hate herign things like that, people will freeze to death through pride and it pains me :(

As far as jobwise no effect. Im a little ticked about the shannanagins the gov't pulled with the bailout. millions of people have lost a lot on their pensions. I did so find I lost 12,000 dollars in mine a week ago :( Just be conservative and diversify savings totally. I roll over IRAs and CD's to help, they seem to be much more reliable and taxed less anyway.

As my dad said when he found out he lost $12,000 out of his retirement:

Your better off sticking it in the mattress!

lol. But seriously I am considering to get a fireproof/floodproof lock box to place all of my important documents and cash money in, and have it bolted to the floor so thieves can't easily make off with it. Probably one of the better investments one could make for their home.

Just recently a friend learned that his job will have a 6-week layoff due to incredibly low boat sales starting after thanksgiving and throughout this holiday season. He also experiences 8 hours short every week at his job since last summer.

I know lot of us are pretty much effected by the economy have gone bad. I know the feeling about the cost of living. I know it pure hell that lot of people have trouble with money due to bad economy. I am one of them. But let hope that the new president will do better with economy for the american people. I am pretty much on support you all on that. It hard and scary. But we all have to hang in there and do the best we can do.

This Wednesday I am going to start the application process to *hopefully* change companies as the one I am currently working for is going belly up and closing its doors on Jan 31st. I should be getting my Christmas bonus the week of or the week after Thanksgiving.

I would rather kiss my Christmas holiday pay good bye for now to ensure that I will have a job well into 2009 and beyond. I dont need any financial distress!

My hubby told me yesterday about meeting at Robert Bosch GmbH (the world's biggest car-parts supplier and rank) where my hubby works have to lock beginning week of December until end of December... No car parts deliver since October... because nobody in the world buy brand cars.

German government tries to offer 2 years tax free for cars if we buy new cars to boost economy...  We would love to help to boost the economy but 2 years tax free for car is too little... We disagree with German government for tax free...and suggest that car companies should offer 50% discount which is easy for the people to buy to boost the economy. The people, they interview said that they prefer to see reduce prices for all foods and drinks, etc over 2 years tax free for that cars...

The "economy" hasn't directly impacted our jobs yet.

Hell my health insurance premiums is really killing me at $200 a month. 12 years ago it was only $30 a month! Then toss in food and gas price increases. This year, my wallet's been screaming for mercy unlike the years past.

Last June the company I work for had to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy and got themselves reorganized on time to get out 4 months later. The biggest casaulties of the bankruptcy was closing 69 stores plus the warehouse in Arkansas. In my 12 years with the company, I have never seen such shit hit the fan like what is currently happening to the economy. Xmas season 2008 is going to be the biggest test Goody's will ever have since it got out of bankruptcy. My job's pretty much on the line with this.

However I should be thankful that I have built up so much seniority with the company that it would be harder to lay me off unless the firm just went bust and sudden closed on me. Seniority gives me the right to bump someone off in another department should I be targeted for a layoff. That way I can stick it to the person last hired there and still keep my job.

Good thing I have only child support, rent and cellphone bill to pay, that is it. I cant imagine what it would be like to get laid off with a heavy debtload. Most of the things I have now has been either paid off or I paid cash for them.

We're doing ok, at least better than the Americans at the moment.

Although, I hear jobs are being cut more often now and people are in severe fiancial stress.

My mother lost about a hundred grand in her retirement fund, and doesn't want to go on senior age pension as they do not cover much. Also doesn't want to go back and teach as working makes her literally sick every single week hence the retirement.

So we're waiting to see what'll unfold.

We're glad that we don't have to worry about medical care and such because Govt looks after us, and we only pay a small potion depending on wage level.

I hope I'll get another job in public service after my contract expires next year. I've noticed that I only spend once a week in contrast to before I started this job.

It's a good thing that the bank interest on mortgage loan are going down daily. Gas is slwoly coming down, but not as quickly as we hoped.

I feel sorry for all those of you struggling more in this climate. I pray it'll improve for you all. Hang in there guys.

Shit? Where my dad work at, laid off at least 10 people at the same day. Local jobs are laying off people too. So I think it did impacted our jobs. Unless you mean at your work place:giggle:

Well, the topic for this thread is, "How are you Affected by the Economy?" So I answered just for my own situation.

Hubby and I don't have a work place. We are each self employed. He owns a small one-man business, and I am a private practice ("freelance") interpreter.

Just recently a friend learned that his job will have a 6-week layoff due to incredibly low boat sales starting after thanksgiving and throughout this holiday season. He also experiences 8 hours short every week at his job since last summer.

Yea, I read about that in the paper recently. Not enough orders so slow down for a couple weeks.

My guy and his co workers have been getting decreased hours but as long as people are still eating out, they are still needed. It works just fine because my guy is working two jobs. One for us, One for the restaurant. He gets the days off to work the "one for us" job. He is off the next three days to work the festival we have this weekend. Then again three days off next weekend. So I have to keep finding festivals, weddings, caterings for the business. :D We just started the high season down here.

There have been too stressful for this family since my Dad had his heart attack when he was doing the grass lawn. The school bus driver found him lay on the grass and performing CPR. He went into coma for two days because of no oxygen in his brain more than 5 minutes. His brain damages which significantly him not recognize me or grandchildren. He was very confused about year because he talked about year 1930’s to 1950’s. He did not realize this year is 2008.

Anyway, we all of us tried so hard to take care of him with all burden to make many trips back and forth to take care of him to do laundry, bathe, cook and grocery shopping. We were out burst with all burdens everyday to take care of my own bills, jobs and family plus my Dad.

We had no choice to find him a good nursing home which is safe and in good care. It cost him $8,000 per month. We have to sell everything his brand new car, house and life insurance. We have finally received a decent offer on Dads house. It is lucky that we received any offer in this bad economy.

We have accepted the offer pending the radon, insect and sewer inspections. His medicine is another $2,200 every two months. It is very expensive. After that we have to apply for Medicaid. At that point, Dad will no longer have any assets left; no house, no car, no bank accounts, no IRA and no life insurance. That means he will not have any more money left….he will be totally broke. Period.

Unfortunately, there is nothing more that we can do about that now. This has been a very sad & stressful process for me personally

Can you imagine, my Dad worked over 40 years to keep the house secure now the government had to force us to selling everything of his value to pay the nursing home?

It scared me because I bought a condo a year ago to development the investment for my two sons. I am thinking about to switch everything names to them instead of my name to prevent government would have possessions of my assets when I become serious disability or illness.

I am thinking about to take all of my investment out from the mutual to hide all of the cash in the safe box to prevent government would take it out.

Not fair, a lot of elderly people who work so many years to looking forward their retirement but the government screw it up to force us to work until 70 or 80 years old.

During Thanksgiving week, we have to take everything out from Dad’s house before other people will move in there. It will be very emotional for us because we grow up in that house for over 40 years! No left for our next generation property value.

I am worried about our next generation grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be much suffer. I heard, their social security would not support them when they become retired or disability.
