Hi from California!

Here is a little secret: being in public without a hearing aid is more noticeable than having one. When you need the cashier to repeat herself a few times, it is pretty obvious something is different. I also go without. Am totally deaf in the right and HOH in the left (40db loss) which I have adapted to. I used a HA for awhile, but found myself hating it. Now I go without and make people face me and repeat themselves.

I well know what you mean by being self conscious with the hearing aid. I started using one over 50 years ago and at that time they were huge by todays standards and were not very common so very self conscious. I now have a CI on right side and HA on left and left is about to be replaced with a CI as well. I quite often point out that I have a CI when in public and I think that helps people become educated on some of these things. As to "normal" what is normal, hearing a tone at a certain level? That is what we say but actually is that normal? Really its about comprehension and I'm not sure that is as well defined.Regardless when you do get an aid put it one and leave it on. It takes time to get used to the sounds/noise but one will never train the brain to accept sounds unless you use it. Like everything else the saying "use it or loose it" is very true with hearing as well. As to financial aid, I'm sure there is some out there. I've been somewhat lucky with insurance taking care of major portion of it over the years but still expensive some times. Then again that depends on definition of "expensive". I'll do some research and see if I can find anything out about financial aid in your situation and get back to you here if I find anything.
Regards and good luck.

Rampratt thank you for helping me! :)

Since you have a CI and a HA, I have a question, is the quality of sound the same in the CI as if it was a HA or is it clearer? That was something my doctor said I would be a good candidate for, since we discovered the nerve in my right ear is still alive.

Welcome to AD.......you are already asking excellent questions and getting good feedback from us....glad to have you aboard.

That's what I'm going through right now. Especially when I have a cold/flu. The ringing sound WONT go away.

I have different noises all the time too, it's part of everyday life and the less I worry about it the less it bothers me. Shame everything isn't like that eh?

LOL I'm experienced with Phonak, Oticon and Siemens since I wore them
Phonak-FM system
Oticon-digital but switching to Safaris in 2011
Siemens-analogs *seen in avatar*

Unfortunately for me, I'm a newbie with brand names  I don't even know what the brand name was for my old hearing aid.

oh LOL
well hearing aids has became digital which mean they got D-mics, Bluetooth if you use the phone alot, noise management and cool stuff!
and they can come in with the remote controls like the Streamer which I may get along with my package.
and U know what's cool? I heard there's some hearing aids that are invisible like the Audeo Yes, Epoqs and more!

I would love Bluetooth hearing aids, but last time I bought some it was not available and now I can't afford any more. Next time though :fingersx:
