Here is a little secret: being in public without a hearing aid is more noticeable than having one. When you need the cashier to repeat herself a few times, it is pretty obvious something is different. I also go without. Am totally deaf in the right and HOH in the left (40db loss) which I have adapted to. I used a HA for awhile, but found myself hating it. Now I go without and make people face me and repeat themselves.
