Help! Metorail and D.C. airports???

Gnarly, irregardless of how you get close to Gallaudet, you will be alone and have bags with you. As a female, I wouldn't suggest you walk 5 blocks alone anywhere. If it is only 5 blocks from Union Station to Gally, take a friggin cab; the fare is cheap vs what unforeseen circumstances could befall you looking like a tourist.

Exactly my point :) :thumb: :gpost:

DoofusMama, here is the situation. That woman is planning everything at the last mintune really, to go to Gallaudet on a visit and if you will notice I gave good advice and I did not point out in a " racial " way. It is true. The neighborhood is very , very bad !!!! There is no denying it.

Here is my comment then you will see that I said it in a neutral way and that advice may have just saved her life.

Never walk around in the area around Gallaudet University. Always have transportation straight to Gallaudet University and no where else since Gallaudet University, unfortunately is located in a black neighborhood with very high crime rate. I know it is 5 blocks away from Amtrak train station to Gallaudet. I think they have the Gallaudet's bus shuttle stop at the Amtrak train station. You also need to realize that the homeless shelter is only 3 blocks away from Gallaudet University which is a very dangerous area. Once, you are on Gallaudet University campus property itself then you are fine. Just sleep in the main dormitory and not off campus. I understand 100 years ago Gallaudet University was located in a 100% white neighborhood. I hope that changes soon. We do not need the crime problems.

I agree Doofus; I hope he meant the same as me; he tends to use words that "red-flag" and I just figure that it's because of his youth. It's a matter of HOW one says things.....age has it's advantage--I am so old.....lol

Btw, I was with some peace-loving black leaders (hearing ppl) in the Gallaudet neighborhood the night MLK was assasinated and these guys hid me in their car and drove me safely back to campus! They said they could not control their people and that I would have died instantly because of the highly charged emotional atmosphere triggered by MLK's assassination.

YEESH!
The bickers won't help me here so take your problems to the PM system and resolve on your own space...

Okay, I was told that the area around Gally (I *have* been to Gally) has quite improved so it is OK to walk around and whatnot.

You all are right-- about me going into the Gally's hood alone. I didn't realize I will be travelling solo. I usually travel with friends and whatnot but my husband had to go to Gally a day earlier and I cannot afford to miss my classes...
I won't drag around a big baggage so I won't be a prey to be mugged. I will try my best to dress like I am a poor university student. :ily: Wish me luck.

I will try the Union station to see if the shuttle will let me jump on the shuttle... (quizzing my Gally friends)

Will it make a difference if I say: I will be in D.C. in the morning??? :ugh: Well I know how to fight off bad guys. I have walked in the NYC streets... :) I will TRY to find a car ride from a Gally friend whoever owns a car... if all fails, I will resort to use the metrorail, Ok folks?
I will POST in this thread to announce whether I arrive FINE in D.C. and which route I will use ;-) :ily:
Thanks for your advice by the way~

Okay gnarlydorkette, please enjoy your time at Gallaudet University and enjoy what Washnington DC has to offer :) :thumb:

Yes, it is much better and reasonably safe, however walking with valuable stuff is not wise in any large American city. It is not just DC.

Well, can your husband be able to meet you? He could get the visitor pass you need for the shuttle.

Cool. BTW, Union Station and NY Ave are on same red line. The shuttle stops at both. It's easier to find at NY ave if you are not familiar with Union Station.

To correct someone else: it is 5 blocks to the New York ave-Gallaudet U. station, NOT Union Station. I know because I do it all of the time.

Okay FOLKS-- (that if you still care!)

Here's the update:

I ended up walking all way from NY.Florida Station to Gallaudet... apparently I walked on the "worst" street out of all-- M Street. Oh well. I survived~
I did got a pass to ride on the shuttle but... I came when they weren't operating... so I was screwed. Was about to wait for a friend with a car to come and get me but... my pager died on me so I didn't have a chance to tell her where I was at :)doh:)... Soooo yeah I walked... it was at 10am so not bad.

DC is a-okay. Went to DPHH. Crowded. But... clique-y...everybody just wants to talk with their FRIENDS, not to social with new people. Met a HoH woman who just nodded at everything and not understand us (i think that is the worst thing you can do to a Deaf person-- to nod and not understand waht s/he says! COM'ON, just ask them "I dont understand, can you repeat/rephrase"). I got judged on for "behaving like a hearing person"... :sure: 'Susci me for being humble! A lot of Deaf work for the government. Where are the liberal folks-- bibliophiles, theologists, and artists??? :ugh:

I don't care how much you are proud/affectionate with DC: IT IS NOT FOR ME. So I probably will move to DC with my legs kicking and being dragged because my husband LOVES it. :(

(sighing) Oh well. It was nice to see my old friends at Gally, altho.

Now-- Home, Sweet Home HERE I COME!
(counting down the hours to Sunday 2pm EST)

Hi Gnarlydorkette, I will keep you in my prayers and I thought the same thing when I visited Gallaudet ... too cliched up and I thought maybe I would not be so accepted there like I was at NTID because of my strong personality
and how so loose Gallaudet was in contrast to NTID being serious about focusing on studying. Both universities party hard but I would have to say Gallaudet's partying to me..... it seems is out of control while I visited NTID it every body partied and knew when to stop and go study.

Remember this is what it seemed like to me.

I hope things will get better with time. I think it would be a good experience in some ways and in some ways not too as well. Maybe in 5 years the both of you could move to Rochester, NY to experience the Deaf community and I know that Rochester is more of a Deaf family environment than what I saw in Washington DC ... it seems everybody wants to hide from each other in Washington Dc but in Rochester , everybody is strong and wants to get together as a family of families. You both could think about staying in Washington DC maybe 2 to 5 years then Rochester NY and see how that goes ? :) :thumb: God Bless

Gnarlydorkette: I check this place infrequently as of late so please do forgive the slow responses, but I wanted to ask you about being accused of behaving like a hearing person. Did somebody come up to you and say it? Talk about lacking tact! :P If some people refuse to see positive things about you, that is their loss.

Never been to DPHH myself, but maybe I will one day when I'm in USA. Yeah, some people can be a bit self absorbed in a concentrated group, but they seem to be friendly if they are by themselves. I guess some people might be too shy to get out of their "group" and tend to stick together. The unknown is scary. I dunno. :) I know for myself if I were chatting in a group, you and others are more than welcome to come up and join me!

Did you mean you walked all the way from US to Gally? Wow. I did that a few times. LOL. Good thing you did it during daylights.. not at 2am when you can expect sleazebags trying to pick you up (speaking from experience).

I also want to say one visit at face's value doesn't really give an objective understanding. I went to Gallaudet for 4 years, and I thought it had its pros and cons. What doesn't? Serious people tend to study in well hidden places, and I have to say I was one of them. I wasn't very social. Always studied and worked. The social butterflies are more... visual, and I think that gives off some kind of impression.

I did think RIT/NTID was nice when I visited it once. Jeeze, their store had everything from photography equipment to textbook!

Which airport did you use? I love travel so I'm just curious about how you got from airport to Gally?

Liza>> That is what I think. I need to spend more time at Gally to find "my people"... because sofar I only hung out with undergrad students at BensonHall/Peet Hall. They sleep in at 4am and wake up at 2pm and eat one meal for the whole day. *Totally* unstable for me to handle. They are my age-- (imagine that!) but we are at a different stage in our lives so I don't mind hanging out wtih them but still! I guess I still have to hunt for my clones. ;)
AND YES, that guy just walked up to me and asked me for my name, then out of the BLUE he said: "Are you hearing or deaf?" I could imagine myself jump out of my seat and claw his face out but instead I was like "why does it matter? What prompts you to ask that?" "Because you sort of behaved like a hearing person"... after that, I just snapped (but I didn't BITE his head off) and gave him my lecture about people judging. That such thing just BUGS me. How could one judge a person's appearance just to decide whether s/he is Deaf or not? WHAT DOES A DEAF PERSON LOOK LIKE?! It is so stereotypical for them to assume a person who looks/behaves "too normal" must be a hearie when in actual, that "normal" person is Deaf!
(screaming!)

dkf>> I took 5A metrobus which is on the curb 2E if you go to the ground transportation at Dulles Airport. It will takes you to L'Enfante Station, go up the staircase and go into the "shops" and take a sharp left and you will see an escalator(SP?) that goes down to the station. Take the green line for Chinatown then once you arrive the Chinatown station, take the red line for NY/Florida Ave. Union Station, for me, is hard to find the Gallaudet's shuttle stop (but I found out where it located at later but I still cannot figure out HOW to get to that stop from US anyway). Flordia Ave Station-- you just go down and wait outside on M Street. It probably took me an hour and 15 minutes or so... I cannot recollect how long exactly but it wasn't not FAR like NYC's JFK airport to Manhattan.

Heath>> I am not sure if RIT does have a Ph.d program for Linguistics... that is the goal for us. Galladuet just has this Ph.d prgoram added three or two years ago so this is very new. (THey has the MA program for many years but Ph.D is a big deal now at the Linguistics program).
