HD-DVD player now in stock...

Today I've tried Dead Rising in VGA HD and honestly, it IS a major improvement too...it has really beat SDTV so bad that it just...died lol.

I can read the subtitles very VERY clearly and is in bigger fonts as well. no joke! Why, I remember when I played that game on SDTV and I was near Jessie or Brad after the cutscenes were over and as I "talk" to them, the text is SO fucking bad you would burst your eyes like hell that you really need eye surgery...but in HD VGA, as I play the game like 5ft back or so, the text is so clear and readable than ever. and when I watched the cutscenes, the ppl looked so DAMN amazing! why, even Jessie's hair looks pure realistic its much like watching a CG movie (example: final fantasty 7: advent children) so with everything looking mighty fine on my VGA montior, I dont think I would EVER go back to SDTV ever again lmao.

Now that I got HD VGA, I still plan to get the HD DVD drive sometime ;) perhas after the holidays lol.

That's because Dead Rising is a game desgined for HD. I am surprised that there isn't a option to change it for a SDTV. I guess the developers want everyone to play Dead Rising in HD.

Get PGR 3 then try to play on SDTV but fonts are horrible and picture isn't good as HD does.

I just got HD-Dvd yesterday. I compare with King Kong DVD and HD-DVD. My hdtv supports up to 1080i. When I put King Kong DVD in hd-dvd and see picture of movie was dry and gray on scene that I picked in end of movie with planes driving around. I can see lots of gray color. I pulled out dvd and exchange hd-dvd in there. Pick same scene. I dont see any gray. It is so clear and crisper. Amazing colors and pictures. I am telling you it is worth to buy and really good for our visuals. It is similar like you are in movie theater but little better than in movie theater. Movie still playing while I picked off other scene selection that is really good. I can not pick any scene selection while dvd movie playing. You have to go back to menu. Hd-dvd can! Subtitles looks more clear than dvd subtitles. I am looking at human faces and it is lot of redish on dvd. For hd-dvd, there are no redish and it is normal as human faces right now. It is much better than dvd so far. I have watch blu-ray movie before on circuit city. I can not compare because my tv is not same as circuit city tv anyway. I would say that I like hd-dvd right now. Sadly, that disney only goes to blu-ray, not hd-dvd. Hopefully hd-dvd will win. Disny can make both. Why not! It is possible.

Yea, Disney made mistake and got screwed up right now.

They will figure out to release on both of them.

I've played "Prey" on Xbox360 earlier today on VGA as well and it's also really improved too...why I remember when I played that game on SDTV, the subtitles were really crappy and too small to read much like Dead Rising's subtitles on SDTV too. the subtitles and textures were very sharp and very fresh just much like a PC game ^^ lol I will NEVER go back to SDTV again...I guess I shall kiss SDTV good bye and say hello to HD VGA! :P

I highly doubt blu-ray would win since of the fact that most ppl are familar with DVDs, and as they hear of HD-DVDs, they would become even more interested as its like the second generation of DVDs and you want to experienece movies futher in high defintion style, then HD-DVD is the best to go since it has 6 times the resloution than the regular DVD. Sure blu-ray is a hi-def disc too but works in a much different way than HD-DVD since I hear alot of blu-ray movies appear to be darker than HD-DVD movies do.

HD-DVD gives out a pretty rich look on the screen as its like you are also in the movie with the characters lol since everything looks pure real in hi-def style.

My money's on HD-DVD since its cheaper and better than blu-ray.

what's ur take?

I believe Blu-ray movies are cheaper than HD-DVD movies.. I don't think either will be victory of the battle. I will grab HD-DVD(360) and Blu-Ray(ps3) some day.

HD-dvd and blu-ray movies are same prices. For systems, hd-dvd is $200 cheaper than blu-ray player.

i watched king kong on my progressive scan dvd player(480p) and the hd dvd player(1080i) simutaniously. i switch video modes on the tv and reciever every once in awhile throughout the movie and watched the same scenes to compare video quality. i can assure you: there is a huge difference between the two formats.

The great thing here is you have the choice of whether or not to buy one.

Think of all those poor souls today freezing in tents with no choice but to accept a $200 increase in price to have a Blu Ray player forced upon them.

The one thing is Blu Ray is a more expensive format, for the consumer and the studio. Reminds me a lot of BetaMax, better quality for the time, but more expensive. We all know VHS won that war. Unless the diffence is huge people will not pay more for movies even if they have a built in player. Sony is once again showing the arrogance of past failures:

BetaMax

Mini Disc

Memory Stick

Blu-Ray

Even the studios that signed on early to blu ray are second guessing and possibly jumping ship. In August HD-DVD sales of movies were already 3 to 1 against blu ray. Even with being forced upon the video gaming public Blu Ray is on its way to being the next cautionary tale of electronics. Don't forget nintendo lost its number 1 spot back in the day insisting the more expensive cartridge was the way to go.

I think the HD-DVD is a good deal if....you find the $40 off coupon from circuit city and are a movie buff.

The reason why BetaMax was a failure was because Sony made it an exclusive technology available only to itself and no other electronics manufacturers.

Therefore, VHS was born to kill BetaMax. Personally, I thought BetaMax was better but Sony got too selfish. That's life.

I was in EB Games earlier today. I looked at a few of the Blu Ray movies they had for sale. Ice Age 2 was $40, at Circuit City I noticed a few BR discs at $35. If this is the standard of pricing for BR discs, then I can see HD DVD whipping its butt. $40 for any kind of movie is absurd unless there are plenty of extras.

My suggestion to buy at Wal-mart. Mostly HD-dvd and blu-ray discs for 25 dollars. Always cheaper than best buy and circuit city.

Hey...want to ask you a question about the subtitle on the HD movies. I am leaning to buy the XBOX 360 with the HD DVD player. I am concerned about the subtitles. Are you really happy with the HD subtitles over the orginial DVD's subtitles? Do you feel a regret that the HD DVD and Blu-Ray don't support the closed caption? Let me know. Thanks!

There is no closed captioning supported, you are correct. But there are now more and more "SDH" which interprets into Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of hearing which is more like captions, being descrpitive of things like sounds that are relevant to the experience. I believe the option is there, to choose normal subtitles or subtitles for the deaf. Why no more closed captioning? I do not know why. But I will speculate that it may cost the company less to subtitle it themselves than it is to pay a closed captioning agency to do it for them.

Thanks, Dr. Strangelove! I will take the XBOX 360 tomorrow and try it out with my Sony LCD HDTV. Can't wait to watch the HD movies. Fed up with my crappy upconverting Zenith player. Hope the HD subtitles function great and beautiful.

I believe the HD DVD format will win. Blu-ray has some real issues - expensive production, manufacturing delay due to the laser supply problem, disk sensitive to the scratch, ridicoulous double copy protection. More and more companies will support the HD DVD format in near future.
