Hey people, I wonder have you met 1995 Miss USA Heather Whitestone? Is she nice? I will be honored to meet her later this month at a reception. I am looking forward to it...

Yes I know her when we were kids at elem school with her in my classmate in Alabama and not see her til she was Miss America and gone to Texas Woman Unveristy to visit choirs there -- have sort of nice quick talk with her --

she was 3 yr old and i was 6 yr old that then -- met again i was 25/26 so she is 22/23 -- :D

oh, she isnt deaf herself... unless she considered as bein oralist, so she is not a deafies.. i did hear abt her being a winner of miss usa or somthin like that.. so who cares abt her.. :sure:

on this note, how can i detele this post? i didnt think right.... i wanna to detele this post,

mods, would u detele my post, please?

YEP! I met her last summer! it was really awesome!! i have a pic of her and me, i will update it soon!

I met her in some convention years ago with my grandmother and we both had a nice chat with her. She seems to be a nice person :)

I have heard she is wicked nice too. Unfortunatly, she still has a very oralist audist attitude. I know she can't help it...her mother taught her to look down on ASL and Deaf culture, but still.....why can't some oralists realize that it's possible to be a part of BOTH worlds (hearing and deaf)?

yea i did met her 3 times at my old school (alabama school for deaf) hehe!! :D

Yes, I have met Mrs. McCallum and talked to her at different times. She lives in the Cumberland/Galleria vicinity of Atlanta/Marietta, about twenty minutes away from where I live. She is a very sweet lady, easy to talk with! John is very lucky to have her as his wife!

GoKiGOki48rs and deafdyke- there is nothing wrong with d/Deaf people choosing their communication methods at their own choices! :) I doubt Mrs. McCallum is that kind who will look down on ASL and the deaf community if she is willing to talk to deaf people like us!

My friends met her in NTID in 1996. =/ I missed to meet her because I was stuck in college class. My old roommate disliked her because she signed very limited as she used oral. My friend liked her as she understood Heather well.

I'm not crazy about her. I saw her performance and she didn't really show much pride for deafness. It's like the oral students here at NTID. They don't consider themselves "deaf" and refuse to work with the deaf community. They just act snobby and talk orally instead of signing because they don't believe in it. They even brag that they don't need interpreters. Yet, they pay less like every other student through NTID. Those are the kind of people I don't like.

Hey Brian, I am not one of those "all oral commuicators are evil wanna-be hearies who are traitors to the deaf-world." I have pretty good oral skills myself.
However, the fact of the matter is, that most dhh people who are oral, didn't conscieously choose to be oral. They weren't raised with both ASL and spoken language training. Most of them were forced to be oral, so they never had a choice in the first place! Thing is her mom is one of those hyperinvolved AGBell parent types, who placed a very high value on spoken language and deintigrates sign language. If she'd been raised with ASL and speech, and had decided that ASL wasn't for her, then I wouldn't say anything about her. But she's all high and mighty b/c she can talk and doesn't need ASL b/c .....OH NO! It's speshal needs! She's nice....but she's also snobby b/c she's a hardcore oralist and she feels ASL is below her. Knowwutimean?
Vampy, I'm with you...... And why does everyone make such a big deal over the fact that she was Miss America? They draw the names out of a hat for crying out loud! It doesn't take all that much talent to be Miss America! I'd be more impressed if she was a college president or something like that! Although I must admit....it was wicked cool the day after she was crowned...I remember EVERYONE at school was like " Deafdyke....... Miss America is deaf and talks like you do!" (I'm pretty self-conscieous about my voice)

Yes, I know what you mean since her mother did INSULT my mama about deafness and education that discrimation -- my parents was soo pissed off b/c they are trying to set up for parent with deaf kids in Alabama (ofc we born same town) -- seems that her mother did not agree with my parents and want to SUE the doctors for some reasons (not need to elaborate about her and my parents)

Wow intresting mizz deaf some poeple have thier own opioion, just remmy ur momma and my momma love us all the same and how they chose us is god's will, we are lucky to have choices and we are lucky to be who we are, and for heather whitestone im sad to say i haven't met her but i do belive i will eventually, As far as i know one thing in life is this, god gave us our life so just go with the flow let them go. :) and im sorry that u were insulted it's closed minded poeple who will not move on to accept that its not a choice but its acceptance....

Yes, it is hard to accepted the fact -- my mama was little upset about hearing her mother treat her same way when heather and me were kids.... my mama - happy - i, raised just fine!

I once met her at Six Flags Great Adventure Deaf and HOH Awareness Day, where she gave a short speech about her experience as a Miss America. It was interesting, and she is indeed beautiful. Of course, with her being oral, she didn't really inspire me so much, except just to hear about her experiences to learn something new.

No, I have never met Heather Whitestone in person!...
