Have you met Heather Whitestone???

ive not met Heather Whitestone -- but have heard how she really is in person and all that and it does turn me off :thumbd: even if she was a miss america *shrugs*

Vampy -- what u have posted rings true!!! well worded and explained! :thumb: and i also agree i dont like those kinds of deafies

glad I'm not the only one who thinks that about Heather Whitestone. I mean I do feel bad for her, growing up with a mother like that...I read somewhere that Heather did learn ASL while growing up ( way back then most deaf kids were oral failures so most educational programs were targeted towards signers)
but her mother brainwashed her to think that ASL was below her.

Who took her life? You mean that her mom committed suicide?

I knew it....I've read some interviews and things like that in Volta Voices and HW's mom sounds like the "healthy normal" type of mother who still thinks of disabilty or any sign of disabilty as "bad" or evil.

I know Heather Whitestone, because we went to deaf oral institution for a few years together. I find her interesting. :)

Heather Whitestone is sux !! She encourages the parents to get cochlear implants for the younger Deaf children to teach their speech earlier. It makes me so mad because Heather is important person. People look up at her.. Oh she is correct to get the Deaf children/babies CI earlier at 18 months old.

I am very against CI at 18 mos old to 12 yrs old. I prefer, the teenager and adults make their own decision.

Heather's mother brainwashed her. Now, Heather brainwashed Parents who have deaf children to get the implant earlier at ages.

I never like Heather, she thinks that her speech is perfect because she is Deaf. The media published saying, her CI is very helpful for her heard her kids better and help her speech improvement.

Deaf would never cure to be hearing !! I am proud to be Deaf !

Katzie, I agree with you but then again, considering the source, I'm not surprised. U hang in there, girl; good to see you....

:grouphug: miss seein' ya 2C

Hey people, I wonder have you met 1995 Miss USA Heather Whitestone? Is she nice? I will be honored to meet her later this month at a reception. I am looking forward to it...

I have never met her, but I have heard about her and she sounds indeed very pleasant. Don't let some of the unlikeable post here stop you from going. Let us know how the reception went. :)

I got so disgusted with the whole reaction to the Heather Whitestone thing. They reacted the same way when Marlee Matlin chose to use her voice and not sign while presenting an award at the Oscars. Where our Deaf future to look up at the Hollywood Deaf people’s model role as Deaf to using their sign language?

You just don't use sign language around hearing people. However, they show interest or motivate then I will teach them. If one can’t communicate with sign language then it will cause very frustration and discourage for the Deaf people.

I'm proud to be deaf. BUT I will say that I'm not ashamed to be deaf. If people can't accept my deafness, then that's their loss not mine.

Not every deaf people in my school know sign languages as they feel comfortable with oralism only as we brought up in oral school, I learnt sign language behind my teachers and family's back because I am curious. Please respect everyone's choice of communication.

I think its wrong to dislike her because she chose oralism, its HER choice!

RedRum, I don't think anyone is dissing on her b/c she chose oralism or has good oral skills. Most Deafies reconize that oral skills are a must in today's world, and most Deafies also realize that most kids who grew up oral, didn't have a say in how they wanted to commuciate. However, it's her attitude towards ASL and Deaf culture that bothers us! I am oral but given a choice I would have chosen to grow up with BOTH ASL and spoken English! It's her audist attitude that bothers us. (that speech and spoken language is FAR supeiror to ASL, and that ASL is a "speshal needs" language, and she's better then us Deafies that sign b/c of that) Do you understand now? I don't like "deafer then thou" people any more then you do....but the discussion that's going on isn't about her being "wannbe- hearie" b/c she speaks. It's about her supeior attitude that she has b/c she speaks. (which she inheirited from her mother...her mother was one of those AG Bell parents)

I think Heather looks nice, i never met her in person but i do wish to... You guys need to accept that some people are using oralism too because thats how they get along in the hearing world.. Not everyone in the world is deaf, theres more hearing then deaf out in the world... my mom and dad made me use my voice and im glad they did because i have so many hearing friends, i would've never had them as my friends if it wasnt for my parents... thats all i have to say about that.. :| I hope I didnt offend anyone, those are my opinions and thats how i grew up.. sorry if im one of those deafies that deaf people hate so much for disrespecting their culture.. :(
