Hand sanitizer is dangerous

Wow! Thanks for posting this info! I have hand sanitizer bottles around my house and a 14 month old son. They are out of his reach but I will now be extra extra careful to keep them way out of his reach!

And just when everyone thought it was 'good'...in terms of combating germs and whatnots....thanks for the notice and for informing AD'ers! :thumb:

Remember, it's perfectly safe to use them... as long you don't ingest it. A lot of products are alcohol-based. You see, a pure drop of alcohol is fatal. However, you'll be fine if you rub it onto your skin.

Just keep it out of reach of the children.

I'm not surprised about this. Cleaning supplies will always have something bad in them. That's what makes them clean so well. It's a matter of using them properly.

Ingesting hand sanitizers are like ingesting Drano. ;)

Ohh two years old of age should be with supervised adult. Thats what i used to work with kids before. 2yrs old is very lucky to be alive. It would be scary enough!

Long term use of such hand sanitizers can be hazardous to one's health, or could affect the general health of the overall population. For example, on how misuse of these items can affect one's health, visit this link for more info:

Antibacterials and Disinfectants: Are They Necessary?

However, the bigger concern could be that the widespread use of these items will only accellerate the evolution of resistant super-germs, and that would be a bad thing for the human race. Witness the abuse of anti-biotics in treating common infections and other maladies, only to see drug-resistant bacteria out in the wild. (But, hey, I'm no doctor, but I did watch 20/20, Dateline, etc.! Is that better than staying at Holiday Inn?) ;)

That all said, I do use them. :) Maybe I shouldn't, but then again, I'm kinda selfish, as I really don't want to be sick, and just want to be cautious. I guess the marketers won over me on this one!

Eyeth...yes this makes sense about germs becoming resistant..that's why doctors are wary of prescribing antibodics for every little cold we get.

I dont use it everyday but when I had pink eye a few weeks ago, ohh everyone used it like every hour! LOL!

Yeah, so this scared me at first but luckily that's all it is because I already know about that...I constantly use hand sanitizer for my snake...he's still a baby and they catch diseases very easily so it's to protect him..

Yeah, its fine for adults but not good for kids...I use it every time i
go shopping and wipe it on the shopping carts cuz thats where
all the nasty germs are! I dont want to pick up other people's
germs and get their viriuses on my hands...eeeek!

I agree with you. I think that everyone should be exposed to some germs from time to time. That's what helps us build a better immunity. I haven't been really sick for over 10 years. I get dirty and I don't panic. I use regular soap. I rarely use anti-bacterial soap. I use anti-bacterial soap whenever I'm at someone's house or apartment that is using it. Other than that, I use regular soap. I'm not a clean freak. ;)

Hand sanitizer found to pose abuse risk
Thu Feb 1, 9:45 AM ET

Prison officials and poison control centers can add a new substance to their list of intoxicants — hand sanitizer. A usually calm 49-year-old prisoner prompted a call to the Maryland Poison Control Center after guards found him red-eyed, combative and "lecturing everyone about life." Other inmates and staff reported the unidentified prisoner had been drinking from a gallon container of hand sanitizer, which is more than 70 percent alcohol, or over 140 proof, the center's director wrote in an article appearing in the February issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

That call was one of about a half dozen the Maryland Poison Control Center has received involving hand sanitizers, said Dr. Suzanne Doyon, the poison center's director and co-author of the article. Doyon wrote the article along with Dr. Christopher Welsh, assistant professor in the University of Maryland School of Medicine, to raise awareness of the potential for abuse of hand sanitizers.

While the hand sanitizer contains other chemicals in smaller amounts, it is primarily the same type of alcohol found in liquor, and acts on the body in the same way, said Doyon.

"I don't think a lot of people realize these are ethanol containing, or alcohol containing. They are really no different than a really concentrated liquor," Doyon said.

However, other types of hand sanitizers contain isopropyl alcohol, which is metabolized differently by the body, and has different health effects, she said.

Alcohol-based sanitizers are credited with being more effective against germs and less irritating, but health-care providers and hospitals and correctional facility administrators should be aware of the potential misuse, the authors said in the article.

Wow I didn't know that, sheesh, thanks for telling me...

This is something that I just found out after an e-mail from a friend. Please keep it away from young kids or they could wind up in the ER.

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Hand Sanitizer Alcohol Poisoning
