Man arrested for planting explosive device outside TTC building
Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon and other local and federal officials held a press conference Friday to address the arrest of William Gregory McGrath.
McGrath was arrested as a result of a joint investigation into the explosive device found at the Rivers Avenue Campus of Trident Technical College on Thursday afternoon. During that arrest, police also discovered McGrath was growing pot plants in his home and was subsequently charged with growing marijuana. Bond was set at $100,000 for the charge of possession or threat to use a destructive device and $25,000 for growing marijuana. During that bond hearing, McGrath said he was confused about the charges.
"I amjust asking for the mercy of the court because I have no idea what this fake bomb charge is even about," McGrath said.
The Trident Technical College Director of Public Safety Larry Savidge said that the college has records of McGrath attending the school. Savidge said his department got an email from a faculty member on Monday about a possible bomb. Public Safety Department responders went to check it out and the device and quickly realized it was suspicious.
"We didn't get that close to it. As soon as we realized it was something suspicious, we cleared out and pushed out and evacuated the building and called for additional agencies," Savidge said.
TTC Public Safety then called in a bomb squad and robots were used to check out the device. They found out that the yellow package had "ammonium nitrate, nails and an igniting device."
Officials would not say if the device was timed to go off.
Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon said a joint investigation led to McGrath's the arrest. Officials found "similar materials" in McGrath's home. TTC Officials say the school will open on the normal day it was scheduled to start after the holidays.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security Investigations, North Charleston Police Department, and Trident Technical College assisted in the joint investigations and are expected to have representatives at the press conference.
