Gun Expert Lott: Let Teachers Carry Arms, Ban Gun-Free Zones to Halt Mass Shootings

There is a difference between bombers and shooters. The bomber knows how to make bombs while most of the shooters don't, therefore the shooters use guns which are easier to use and kill. There are not many bombers around. Last time we had a bomber, it was in Oklahoma City in 1995. Tim McVeigh was a terrorist unlike other shooters.
Internet, okay, anyone can learn to make a bomb. Do you really think that if nobody in this country had guns, not even bad guys, hypothetically, that if someone wanted to take a bunch of people out they wouldn't find out how to make a bomb?? start a fire, go in with a knife. A gun is not the only way to kill someone. I mean seriously dude, c'mon now.

I agree with this.

Wrong, only if a person has been institutionalized or deemed dangerous by the police will they be denied purchase, and that depends on state law.
that has already been a law for a long time.

This is totally different than my approach which would mean any single history for that particular person. And, if you haven't been diagnosed by a doctor with a mental illness it wouldn't apply. Furthermore, that anyone including family is not allowed to expose them to guns without criminal penalty.

No thought police is needed...
that would be unconstitutional and illegal on several grounds.... and not to mention a very slippery slope to serious erosion of our rights.

The last bomber we had was in 95???

Somebody better free Eric Rudolph then.

If there has already been a law, why would it be unconstitutional? Are you saying the existing law has not been contested?

We already regulate it. We just need to tighten it.

because a law-abiding person's constitutional right is being denied or restricted because of relationship with a person with mental history.

what's next? arresting parents for exposing children to Jackass movie if they made a trouble at school and then ban them from watching movie/tv?

Are you saying the existing law has not been contested?
it has always been contested on daily basis. for the past couple years, Supreme Court's ruling was a victory for gun rights advocates. DC and Illinois highly-restrictive gun laws and gun bans have been found unconstitutional.

We already regulate it. We just need to tighten it.
it's already been tightened. like I said before - the system worked. Adam tried to buy a rifle and he was turned away.

I don't really know how much more tight do you want to get when it's already tightened. No laws can ever prevent this tragedy. NONE whatsoever. As far as I'm concerned... car accidents are #1 child killer and yet... we want to waste our time and limited tax money on gun laws that will fail like always?

Why are you focusing on impossible thing rather than possible thing such as setting up effective emergency protocols that would save many lives?

During Columbine massacre, the bomb failed to explode, even though the shooters learned how to make a bomb through internet.

By the way, it's reported that gun violence kills 10,000 Americans each year.

Update:

THE BOMB WAS REAL!

Man arrested for planting explosive device outside TTC building

Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon and other local and federal officials held a press conference Friday to address the arrest of William Gregory McGrath.

McGrath was arrested as a result of a joint investigation into the explosive device found at the Rivers Avenue Campus of Trident Technical College on Thursday afternoon. During that arrest, police also discovered McGrath was growing pot plants in his home and was subsequently charged with growing marijuana. Bond was set at $100,000 for the charge of possession or threat to use a destructive device and $25,000 for growing marijuana. During that bond hearing, McGrath said he was confused about the charges.

"I amjust asking for the mercy of the court because I have no idea what this fake bomb charge is even about," McGrath said.

The Trident Technical College Director of Public Safety Larry Savidge said that the college has records of McGrath attending the school. Savidge said his department got an email from a faculty member on Monday about a possible bomb. Public Safety Department responders went to check it out and the device and quickly realized it was suspicious.

"We didn't get that close to it. As soon as we realized it was something suspicious, we cleared out and pushed out and evacuated the building and called for additional agencies," Savidge said.

TTC Public Safety then called in a bomb squad and robots were used to check out the device. They found out that the yellow package had "ammonium nitrate, nails and an igniting device."

Officials would not say if the device was timed to go off.

Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon said a joint investigation led to McGrath's the arrest. Officials found "similar materials" in McGrath's home. TTC Officials say the school will open on the normal day it was scheduled to start after the holidays.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security Investigations, North Charleston Police Department, and Trident Technical College assisted in the joint investigations and are expected to have representatives at the press conference.

Interesting comment about the story by someone in the newspaper:

"So I don't understand what they consider safe but my son's daycare is right next door and hearing of the bomb threat my husband was going in to pick up our son. When he got there the police made him go back to his car and I called daycare to see what was going on. While on the phone with the daycare I heard "fire in the hole" repeated a few times and then a big loud boom! I don't know how fake a bomb could be and still make that loud of a noise."

Sheriff releases details of arrest in bomb threat at Trident campus in North Charleston – The Post and Courier

well - a terrorist wouldn't yell "fire in the hole!" before he blows it up. a bomb squad obviously blew it up on purpose in order to disarm it but I can see how it can be mistakenly perceived.

anyway... who the heck is William Gregory McGrath? what's the reason to place a bomb there? how did police figure it out it was him? what course did he take at that college?

I know that; that's SOP for bomb squads. I think the more important point was how close it was to her son's daycare.

He's nobody I've ever heard of.

Interesting combination--making bombs and growing weed.

I hope they soon release more information.

exactly. something's very fishy in here. growing weed is one thing but bomb? that's a serious time at prison and a big step up from misdemeanor or some chump charge to possibly terrorist-level charge. indeed fishy :hmm:

Poisioning from medicine killed 40,000..... Guess we should ban medicine too.

10,000? so statistically small. very insignificant compared to something like.... DUI and child abuse.

By the way, I recall that there was strict ban on assault weapon in the United states and it was between 1994 and 2004.

Do any one of you recall the North Hollywood massacre that took place in 1997? This was one of worst shoot out. Why it was the worst? Well, most cops do not have assault weapon, and these two guys found perfect opportunity, worn Kevlar clothes (Bulletproof vest and attires), decided to rob a bank would do anything to avoid going to jail. But the problem is, these two guys did not realize that witness already there including a cop, called for back up knowing there is armed bank robbers which result having police swarmed and boxed the area. These two guys came out and found themselves surround with cops. The problem like I said cops do not have assault weapons, they couldn't take these two guys out but these two guys shoots hundreds and hundreds of rounds. It was crazy, the number of death was just 2 and it was both of robbers. This proves that banning assault weapon is much more dangerous, if had cops back then allowed carry assault weapons like AR-15 then cops will have no problem taking these two guys out even with bullet proof clothes.

So the idea of banning assault weapon is still bad idea. I am all for those authorized and trained personeel carry lethal assault weapons and maintain 2nd Amendment.

no. back then - the cops didn't have assault weapons because there were no budget plus there was no need for it. the thought of "militarizing" peace officers was unfathomable until LA Bank Robbery. and now.... our "peace officers" - notice the irony - are armed to the teeth and are dressed like GI Joe. that is very sad for America.

These bank robbers modified their guns to be fully-auto. at that time - it was very easy to modify semi-automatic AK-47 into full-auto AK-47. You just have to drill a hole in it to install an autosear pin.

since then, police departments were allowed to purchase military weapons leftovers from National Guards. I'm against this and I believe our police officers should not be equipped with assault weapons. It should be left to S.W.A.T. and National Guards to carry assault weapons on American soil. If our own police officers have to pack a heat and more, then so should we! I do not believe there should be many laws that police officers are exempted from. It goes both way.
