Light hazing...

Hmmm that is a concern if they make you do it... if they say "If you'd like to participate, that'd be great.. if not, no problem" then it's probably ok, as long it's YOUR choice. It's illegal to haze people especially those unwilling. If they continue to haze after one decides to not to participate any further, then that's illegal as well.

I enjoyed my sorority activties, they were really cool but never did really stupid stuff like they used to do in the 60s/70s... (asked mom!) Everything was voluntary.

Exactly... a good pledge program basically covers teamwork, philanthropy, fundraising, parlimentarian procedure, history, etc. Nothing is over forcing you to do something stupid for hours or anything like that such as running naked in the snow or wearing diapers.

[coughing] what do I think of the greek system?

I can't say it because I got several friends that fall into the system as victims- er, PLEGES so I dont want them to think that I am going to hate them if they turn into a sorority/frat....

All i can say that I am not the right candidate... I dont give a fuck about my "sisters", and i dont get along with people that lives in the same household.... i am a solitary person who don't drink or do drugs. :) So a sorority house is 100% WRONG for me. And hanging with one will wreck my reputation- err, well as long I am not caught being seen with them... ;)

So.... are you saying that sorority girls drink and do drugs?? Hmm... well that's a stereotype.. JFYI. I decided to not to drink for a long time while in the sorority cuz I was dating a straight-edged guy. And my big and little sisters don't drink or do drugs at all.

Like I said before.. I'm a very solitary person as well but it's nice to have friends that you can just grab on your way out someplace. The sorority won't wreck your reputation -- only YOU could do that. People learn to respect every individual as themselves, not by the Greek letters they wear.

Yep, she's right. There are thousands of fraternities and sororities out there. That's good because you can pick one of them. That's the whole point of the pledge program. If you go into one pledge program and don't like how they do things or they haze you, you can always leave and join someone else instead. Just because you pledge doesn't mean you must promise to become an official member.

its interesting. I know there are deaf people that are in the greek system but I have noticed there are none that are focused only on deafness, its more like a social frat/sorority. I was shocked to see from my research that the greeks in gally is not a deaf one, its part of a hearing one, they just have a chapter there. I thought gally would have the first all deaf only frat/sorority not a chapter from a hearing one. I wonder how do they communicate when they meet the other hearing chapters........curious..............I hope no one takes this the wrong way.

BabyPhat21,

You should research more and deeper... There are four local greek organizations which focus largely and strongly on deaf culture, on Gally campus. Those deaf local greek organizations are nowhere that connects firmly and closely to the hearing chapters. Two of them, Kappa Gamma and Phi Kappa Zeta are well known to emphasize very strongly on Deaf culture as well as members which come from Deaf family. As far as I could recall, there were only two national fraternities, Kappa Sigma and Delta Sigma Phi and one national sorority, Delta Zelta which have many hearing chapters over the US and Canada on Gallaudet University campus. The best way to gather information on how they can manage to communicate with their hearing chapter members is to ask them on their Gallaudet University websites. Maybe one or two of them are willing to answer your questions. :D

Please be noted that the local and national/international greek organizations are so different. :)

You could ask me by PM because I had been so much involved with one of the local greek organizations and Greek Council for more than 4 years on the Gallaudet University. I am glad to help you out whenever you ask for. :D

Now, you can see why I am an old fart! :D

I have checked the history and as well as you can see it is not BY deaf FOR deaf. that is what I am trying to say.

For your information, my fraternity was founded by three DEAF male students.

There is a national fraternity, a national sorority, an international fraternity, a local sorority, and a local fraternity here at RIT.

Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity -ΔΣΦ- is national. It was originally founded as local, Zeta Pi Mu Fraternity -ΖΠΜ-.

Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority -ΣΣΣ- is national. They were originally founded as local, Delta Apha Sigma Sorority -ΔΑΣ-.

Sigma Nu Fraternity -ΣΝ- is international. They were originally founded as local, Sigma Kappa Tau Fraternity -ΣΚΤ-.

The other two fraternity and sorority remain local. They are Alpha Sigma Theta Sorority -ΑΣΘ- and Kappa Phi Theta Fraternity -ΚΦΘ-. -ΑΣΘ- has expanded their sorority to two other campuses, CSUN and Gallaudet.

Hope this gives you a little insight on the history of the deaf Greeks here at RIT.
