German Homeschoolers

wow. 4 years old thread. I guess that thread pretty much ended this thread!

Yeah, especially for something that is constantly evolving, getting better, etc.

We have alot of Old German Baptists (sometimes call dunkers or anabaptists) and Amishs who are originally from German. It's sad they had to leave German because of religious freedom.

I have read Liebling's reasons for not supporting homeschooling and I find it interesting. Perhaps it's how it is in Germany but in America - it's not like that.

some good major concerns from Liebling's post -
  • parents are not qualified/trained teachers
HSLDA | Home School Laws - each state has different laws on homeschooling but the map shows MAJORITY of states especially the populated states are subjected to stringent requirement and regulation to ensure that homeschooled children are on par with private/public students
  • isolation from social environment
There are many clubs available for them to participate in such as Church group, Boy Scouts, Charity/Volunteer Program, and hundreds of other programs. This is America - we have TONS TONS TONS of youth programs!!!
  • quality of homeschooled education is not good enough
according to HSLDA - the statistic shows that homeschooled children have scored 37% better than public schools on standardized achievement tests. 2 most common reasons for parents to homeschool their children are for religious purpose and other reason is because the public education is either terrible or too slow for their smart children.
  • loss of public services
all public services are free for everybody such as library, YMCA, community center, etc.
  • hefty personal responsibility on parents
well even for private/public school, it's still a hefty responsibility. It's not everybody.
  • homeschooled children will have hard time getting into some colleges or work
my quick search showed that there are over 1,000 colleges that accept homeschooled children including Ivy Leagues. This information is several years outdated so I imagine pretty much all colleges do accept homeschooled children.
  • "brainwashed"
well - the public/private schools do have a hidden propaganda and it produces people with a similar mindset. Catholic Private School produces people with religious concept in mind and other school produces people with its own concept in mind.... et cetera :)

Which one YMCA here or in German? here it isn't free for ymca. I have to pay for it. ALmost most of those activities for kids that have to pay for unless for the people who have low income resources then they may get free or pay small amount of $ for kids to get involved with some activities.

Not really for religious freedoms, but to avoid Prussian military conscription.

I homeschool my 2 teens. I have homeschooled for the last 8-9 years with the exception of 1-2 years due to medical issues.

My daughter has such learning issues that she has to have one-on-one learning and the public school basically told me that they could not handle the learning style she has or her disabilities.

My son just could not tolerate the narrow-mindedness of the school where we were and then when we moved, he did try the public school in that area. It was so big, he got lost and was always late for class. He basically had 3 minutes to get from one end of the building and go to the complete opposite end and from the ground floor to the 4th floor. He had asthma attacks daily in his rush. After 5 months he begged to come back home for homeschool.

Both kids are very social as much as they can be. Daughter is not a trusting person due to being picked on and totally persecuted for her disabilities. Son attends Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments and games every weekend. Is very outgoing and social in church and has made a bunch of friends in the new neighborhood since moving to Florida. He is also helping one of his new friends with math and world history. Son is 14 and does 8-10th grade level. Daughter is 15 and due to her problems, has constant review and is doing 3rd -7th grade level. Daughter volunteers at the local animal shelter and is also in charge in the church nursery. The neighborhood kids will have nothing to do with her and she's fine with that. She relates better with adults and pre-schoolers.

When I was working full time and my husband also, we had the advantage that my mother lives with us and she made sure kids did their school work and I checked it when I got home. Daughter and my mother do not get along and that was a hassle. I no longer work, so I have the time to devote to the kids. When I have errands with MIL, the kids wait until I am done. Since they are older, my main requirement is that they get their lesson plans on Monday and ALL work must be completed before dinner on Friday. Generally they do work each day, but son likes to put it off when he can.

I homeschool year-round so that we can take a week off here and there or days when hubby is off and we go out in the boat or something. Home schholing gives me the flexibility that works with our family.

Now that I have lost my hearing and am taking an ASL class, the kids are learning at home as well. Daughter struggles since she has no memory retention. Son is doing well.

My kids are mostly polite and attentive to other people. They go around the neighborhood and ask if they can do anything to help the neighbors out. The neighbors helped MIL before we got here and the kids want to return the favors.

I noticed

The boys in my extended family all got put in martial arts classes and were blackbelts by age 16. That was my family's spontaneous response to socializing in school growing up. The boys all did well and are grown men now and did not suffer from being bullied in school. The martial arts gave them similar self assurance to what I usually see in homeschooled kids.
I have had the aquaintance of quite a number of young people homeschooled up here and all of them have had some things in common. They were very mature at their age level and had good self worth and confidence and were openly interested in learning about the world around them. Hard to find anything wrong with that.
I understand now that bullying is common among the girls now as well. If that is a positive socialising atmosphere to some well I hate to think what else they think is good for people. Myself I did not get much out of having my ass kicked by big morons accept some anger management issues to heal up from.

there you go, America! Homeschooling in America work!

I don´t support homeschooling for several reasons. I made many posts in other debate thread over homeschool a few years ago.

Public school in America isn't same as Germany, it is very different and many low income and some middle class families couldn't afford to put their children in private school so homeschooling will be final option.

There's students whoever has issue with some school so they opt to go to other school if it is still in district but none of school buses will come because of out of school zone so not everyone could afford to spend on gas for transportation to different school in same district but out of zone.

I was wondering how School in Germany is set up for people who have Autism, down syndrome, illness, etc.

Some kids who have cancer have to be isolated and schooled at home/hospital

actually, that is very true for alot of homeschoolers. They can't afford it. But It is also true for alot of homeschoolers that the school don't match their religious beliefs. My friend who is a Jehovah Witness did not want to put her kids in a christian school. But she did not agree with public school either. So she decided to homeschool them.

one of my old church members went to a private school that let her go half of the day. The rest of the day, she goes home and be homeschooled.

Well that's more hoisptial bound schooling. The parents don't nessarily teach the kid. As a matter of fact, I think most of the time with that sort of schooling, tutors from the school system come in and teach.
I do think that we need to go back to the option of having schools specificly for children and adults with disabilites. This whole mainstreaming thing is just not working very well except for a few people. (who prolly would have excelled pre LRE mainstreaming) And quite a few parents aren't trained to teach kids with disabilites. I do think a lot of the parents who homeschool their kids due to disabilties/medical issues would LOVE the option of a school devoted to educating kids with that sort of disabilty. Much better then mainstreaming where the kids get lumped in with the bullies and the " Ummm who's President Obama?" types.
Reba, I'm not demonizing evalingcal Christians.... BUT it does seem like there's a subset of evalingcal christians who think that anything even remotely secular is teh evil.
Like just a MENTION that there are families out there who are gay or lesbian, they're on the defensive yapping that their kids are being "corrupted" by the secular system. The textbooks don't go into details or anything. It's just a MENTION that there are men and women who are in not exactly 1950's realtionships. It's like a textbook mentioning that there are interracial or interreligious couples Or divorced people (three types of relationships which quite a few people have interpreted the Bible as not supporting!) Why don't evalingcal Christians who send their kids to public schools get upset about interracial/interreligious or divorced couples being portrayed in textbooks/diversity things?
And yet, those are the very same people who think that Intelligent Design and other Christian things should be pushed in public schools.
As for the mom being "stuck" being the homeschool teacher, think about it. It reinforces traditional gender roles (a women's place is in the home A mom's life should be ALL about her kids and only her kids) AND it can add major stress to a mom's life. (being a teacher can be very stressful and exhausting. I know this from my friends who are teachers)
As for the kids who were very sheltered....some examples I remember off the top of my head are a girl who was saving her first KISS until marriage (first KISS! Until MARRIAGE?!?!?) Kids whose parents punished them for saying "gee" or who weren't even allowed to listen to contemporary Christian rock music.

I don't like secular teaching either. We are taught there is one God and we need to worship him and not be part of the world (or be worldly) . Amish do this too, which is why they cut off outside world from their world. Strict Jewish family do this as well. We are not the only one. I don't know why people are picking on Christians when other religions pretty much do the same thing.

yes, I fully aware of that. My exbf told me he had hospital bound teacher because of severe crohn's disease. he was still isolated and didn't socialize with friends growing up. He was sick all the time. He stayed home majority of the time, not the hospital so that's another reason why he didn't have very many people to hang out with. But he turn out pretty good despite all that.
