I will be attending Gallaudet University in the fall of 2017. I'm looking for feedback and opinions from anyone who has/is currently going to this college. Both bad and good reviews are greatly appreciated. Things like dorm life, cafeteria food, teachers, students, jobs, crime rate, environment. Thanks in advance!!!

great your going to gally!!!

certainly things changed since my noble presence graced its hallowed halls...besides dorm name changes...
the neighborhood i'm told is much much better..

just remember
study and do your work, also don't forget to relax and do your chin ups...

Ditto Hoichi (!).

Things have changed a LOT since I went there. I visited last year- for the most part the campus is the same but with some added additions, subtractions and enhancements (The old Audiology building is gone.. they were talking about tearing the Library down but that's on hold).

Anyway...as Hoichi said.. the area around Gallaudet is a LOT better.. many deaf friendly businesses and a subway stop across the street on NY Ave (we had to take the bus to Eastern Market or Union Station to get to the subway). Amazing how the H street area has improved!!

Cafeteria food.. ah probably the same (terrible)- I've heard the cafeteria was painted over so no more "Red room" "Yellow room" etc lol- not sure if there is still an upstairs. Dorm life is good- depending on which dorm you are assigned to. There used to be Freshman dorms- if I remember my friend told me that's switched around to different dorms now. Would love to see the inside of the newest dorm they have there (dorm 6? Not yet named).

You'd probably need somebody who's been there in the last 5-10 years. Hoichi and I are from the dark ages lol (more than 30 years for me)

be careful with boys... Im sure u heard about HOEZ just be careful! other than that have fun!!! im sure it will be great experience for you!

Well be careful about issues like sexual assault as well. That can be a concern. But if you're careful hopefully you can avoid that. Wish they would be VERY proactive with sex ed and issues of consent etc.

I was Gallaudet student from 2014 to 2015 so expected to returning in Jan 2017.

If you are underage freshmen so you will be automatically assigned to Benson Hall, but if you are overage freshmen so you may assigned to West Ballard, or North Ballard if opens, or Carlin Hall if you are disabled, or Dorm 6 (new dorm) if available. Dorm 6 is for all 2nd year students but they do have dedicated suites for students with disabilities, regardless on status.

Overall, most of DC metro are nice but there are bad area, but outside of campus, it is iffy, not good or bad area, especially from Florida Ave to H Street, but beyond West Virginia Ave is bad area, however some deaf people managed to live in those area. It could be dangerous at night - worst crime will be armed mugging or sexual assault (if you are women). The murder isn't issue if you aren't involved in drug case or gangs. There are undesirable area in some part of PGC, MC and NoVA.

The dorm life is mostly party on weekend, but you can easily avoid them if you don't live in Clerc Hall. It is college life after all. ;)

Many students are cool but you have to deal with unfriendly students too - don't fall into wrong crowd. It is depending on your personality, I'm not sure if you could make a lot of friends or easier to find groups. If you are deafblind so you could be shunned by many students, but you will make friends with some students, at minimum.

The cafeteria food could be from bad to good, depending on daily menu, also there will be same food over again on weekend and Thanksgivings week, but cafeteria close on Spring Break week. Sure, cafeteria has some health violation, especially mold on bread and norovirus on chicken (they pulled out after many students sick from eating chicken), but norovirus is rare. If you have health issues or concern so you can ask your doctor to allow you to access to kitchen, but sometime, they can be difficult to acquire, but I can't give much details on public forum (please PM me). You will have many options with off campus - restaurants on H Street or many different foods at Union Station. Overall, cafeteria food isn't great as home and restaurant, but much better than food at K-12 school, hospital and jail.

There are good and bad teachers but, due to nature of small college, you may have no choice to avoid bad teachers. Check this website below.

Check with Gally Career Center if you need job.

The environment of Gally is mostly decent, but you will find ugly, outdated in some older buildings.

Speaking about sexual assault, if you don't want to be victim so you need to avoid major parties at Clerc Hall and drink responsibly (don't get drunk), also don't go near fraternities.

You can host your own private party with your friends only.

Gally cafeteria was renovated in 2003 after Gally terminated old cafeteria company and replaced with Bon Appetit, but it used to be great with several years and food quality is going downhill due to less money.

Yes, Dorm 6 is still official name for now.

You are correct, North Ballard and West Ballard used to be underage freshmen dorm, but changed to Benson Hall in 2009 after RL loaned North Ballard to MSSD because all of old MSSD dorms demolished so they are building new dorm right now.

Of course, H Street has been improved a lot.

So most of the sexual assault issues are fratboy issues? That's interesting.....just like at any other university. Granted that's an area of concern, and we should try to avoid sexual assault issues as much as possible, but from what the haters have been saying, they make it sound like there are a bunch of allyway rapist types roaming around campus.

Perhaps, not all fraternities, there are good and bad chapters, but I recommended to avoid their events, especially parties if you don't want to be sexually assaulted.

Also, Gally let you report sexual assault to MPD (DC Police).

I think any party there you need to be careful with not just the Greek parties. Even the Abbey-- uh sorry Rathskeller now lol.

Gally is behind in a lot of ways but others they're trying to catch up...slowly but getting there.

i want to add also for who ever reads this.
if you do go to a a party always drink from your bottle, no matter where that party is. drink from the bottle YOU open. i cant stress this enough.
you need to watch not only how much you drink but watch your drink.
its easy.
just if your going to drink, open the bottle yourself and keep it close in eye reach at all times....

when you see the inevitable girl go down, you will thank me..

DeafLife had a cover story and article on this very topic in july 2015 issue

Oh yeah I know.... Not all frats. I just found it interesting that most of the rape issues reflect the greater world. It SUCKS and needs to be STOPPED and demonized.

Hello,

I see many people here have been at Gallaudet. Does Gallaudet show any interest in the arts and social sciences? I have the impression that colleges for the deaf in the US and abroad want students to focus on professions only (i.e. IT, nursing, carpentry, and so on) cause they can't think that deafies may be capable of other things and they see hobbies as a harmful thing. I may be wrong, but that's the impression I get when I navigate academic programs for the deaf.

Gallaudet is actually a liberal arts university and do have Education majors (Elementary and Early Childhood- I think there's Secondary as well) on the undergraduate level. During my time there were some education majors/courses at the graduate level. Mine was Education of the Multi-handicapped but I do remember several majoring in Secondary. There's also Social Work and Psychology... English (some I think have double majored in Education and something else like English or Mathematics).

NTID is more technical/science oriented.

Both encourage deaf to do what they dream of doing- no barriers.
