Fredfam1 Conducts Another Experiment

End of Day 3 and Hand shape 2

I am very curious if CS will help hearing children who struggle with literacy. Keep it up, Fredfam1! :)

Thanks Shel
Today felt frustrating because I didn't feel I was
memorizing anything. Maybe my brain is trying
to decide what it will delete to make room for this
new info. I have been practicing the transition from
handshape 2 to handshape 3 because I've never made
my hand do that shape before. You curl your index
finger in along with the thumb and the last 3 fingers
stick straight out. I haven't shown this to the kids yet
because I want to maintain some air of competence.
(I need more practice then they do:giggle:)
Tomorrow I show them face position 2 where I will
get to draw green dots on our chins to remind us
of its location. Was in the coffee shop today and not
one person asked me why we all had green dots on our
faces and letter combinations written on our fingers.
(I Think My Reputation Doth Proceed Me):giggle:

I am really enjoying reading about your teaching experiences. Keep us posted.

Thanks Vallee! I'm thinking of starting a blog/vlog of our
homeschooling experiences. I would do the vlog in voice
with ASL, which means the kids and I would really have
to practice befor we let ourselves be filmed, which would
force us to improve. Might even help my receptive skills.
That's for 08 though!

Wow! ASL with voice? That's very difficult.

Day 4 of CS Face Position 2

The Trouble With Home Schooling

The most troubling aspect of home schooling is interruptions.
They most often take the form of spouses who are off work.
My husbands job has him away from home 4 days each week,
with all Federal Holidays off, sick leave, family leave etc.
However, 2 months of every winter he is on Furlough. This
means he draws unemployment for 2 months while Crater
Lake tries to plow itself out from the daily snow. (He has
the job position of carpenter there)

So this AM I sat down on the couch in my jamies and a
hot steaming cup of coffee that had been made on the
wood stove. (relevant later) I sit the 3 little ones down
in front of me on the mini trampoline in front of the
Christmas tree and we begin our lesson. "Ok kids today
his Face Position number 4" All obediently place their
fingers on their chins, following my example. At this point
daddy comes in and says, "I need Chris". I say, "Honey
we just started!" "Fine, then I can't install your new oven"
(which had broken the day befor Thanksgiving) This is why
I had made the coffee on the woodstove. "OK Chris go help
daddy and log this time in under Shop Class". So I'm left to
continue with PJ and Liz while Chris learns how to disconect
and reconect a propane line. On with the lesson.

I begin with the new sounds for FP number 2 which are,
aw as in tall, ooooo as in blue, and e as in tent.
We are repeating aw, ue, e... aw, e over and over. Chris has
rejoined us begins to giggle and says we sound like indians.
(I redirect)
I then show them how handshape 1 consonents combined
with face position 1 produces more sounds. 7 year old PJ
thinks a moment and says, Paw, POO Pe! and then
disolves into peals of laughter.
(7 year olds love this type of humor)
(again I redirect)
10 year old Lizzy is getting bored and so am I because of all
the distractions and we are having trouble remembering the
new sounds. So I get every one up and play choo choo train.
We make train track sounds walking in tandem the length of
the sun room. (instead of chanting choo choo we chant eee
ur, eee ur, at the end of the room we turn and pull an imaginarry
whistle going TOOOOT TOOOT and switch to FP 2 chanting
aw, ue, e, aw, ue , e....etc)
We collapse back on the trampoline, I sit on the couch to finish
the lesson and Daddy pops his head in and says, "I need Chris".
"What For?" "I want to teach him how to make the breakfast
gravey." (Siiiiiigh) "Ok Chris, go log that in under Home Ec in your
note book" back to practice, but the kids have had it and the
dog keeps trying to lick their arms when they are making the
face positions. More later!:rl:

Yes, which means it would be very scripted and practiced,
but of course no one will see the practice, hee, hee

Will you have one person voicing and one person signing? Or one person doing both?

I hadn't thought that far ahead yet. But PJ at 7 seems to
be much better with his receptive skills than my 10
and 12 year old. I havn't signed any more with him
than the others, I think it's just natural for him. I am
thinking I will have him voice. He really seems to understand
naturally that the sentence structure is different and
with out saying to do so speciffically I have heard him
interpret small ASL sentences into English. Pretty Cool!
So I think I'll have him voice.

What a coincidence....my son's name is P.J.

"The last time I was required to talk to anybody, I got married and had 7 kids"! That cracked me up big time!

Yeah Tousi, I bet you never thought a simple
homework assignment could have such a lasting
impact. I wish I could take my whole family to
see my Deaf instructor from 23 years ago! I saw
on the internet that he is now working at a college
in Washington, only about 5 hours from us. I'd
say, "See! this is your fault!" hahaha:giggle:

End of Day 4 CS face position 2

Walking around chanting to myself,
"Face are vowels, Hands are consonants."

Had to find a different "game" to play. I told
the kids we would pretend to all be robots and
after I drew the second green dot on their face,
(on the chin), I told them we all had to go around
randomly through out the day and "push each
others buttons" That way we had to remember
what vowel sounds went with each of the two
positions. I still had to peek at the end of the
day. The kids remembered though! I am going
to do this thing!:squint:

Perserverance, fredfam1!

Skipped Today Sort Of

Introduced hand shape 3 today, but daddy took all 3 little ones
to town with him today on errands. (Nearest town is McMinnville
about 35 miles away) Big library, lots of videos to check out.
I suspect there was some secret Christmas Shopping for me
by the giggles and snickers that were being thrown around.
(He goes back to work 2nd week of Jan and I will be able to
resume my home schooling schedual uninterupted. Reviewed hand shape 3
when they got home a few mins ago but will redo that shape
tomorrow and begin again.

On the flip side I got to watch two episodes of Star Trek
UNINTERUPTED! I didn't tape it for later viewing like I usually
do. Ahhhh! the simple pleasures in life.:giggle:

Sounds like all is a-bustle for the holidays in your house! My son will be arriving tomorrow evening for Christmas. I can't wait!

What a wonderful Christmas present! Enjoy the baby. Oh how I love to be with the little ones and see the magic of Christmas.

My daughter and I go home on the 26th. This is the busy time for my husband at work and he has to stay with the dog. So we have our nice little family Christmas time together.

Jillio enjoy your visit with your son. Have a great time.

Thank you, vallee. I'm sure it will be too short, but they do grow up, don't they? Merry Christmas!
