For Hearing Educators

Why on earth do you think I want everyone to be hearing? Even if you assume the very worst of me (which isn't true, but for argument's sake) wouldn't I want more deaf children so that I could keep my job? I am actually in the business of putting myself out of business! The better my students do, the quicker they leave me. If they get great intervention in birth-3, and everything goes well, they never even enroll in our school.

Because you say that Deaf/HoH children all need HAs and CIs, and need to learn to "hear" and speak English. Last time I checked that's what makes you hearing. Therefore you want us all to be hearing not Deaf.

And Its a no wonder WHY the D/deaf have NO say in the matter when it comes to the hearing school SYSTEM. smh! Its time to put a stop to the hearing world of thinking what hearing people think is best for the disabled people who have a mind of their own. Its no wonder why privilege hearing folks think it's their way and their way that works. Last time I check, Father in heaven made us this way and for you to say to be given "provided services" to D/deaf families, that's like saying, being D/deaf is not an option. I know people like you... you are NO different! phony.
A 6 week old baby can't make this decision and their parents are the ones who do. Who do you think should decide for a deaf infant?

Absolutely not. I know families who choose no amplification and ASL as the language of their family. I know families who choose CIs and ASL as the language of their family. I know families who choose spoken language. All of those are amazing choices and can be successful.

Wait, are you claiming that people who use listening technology are no longer deaf? That is absurd.

We tried your world sweetheart, IT DOESN'T WORK!!! If that baby is deaf and learns speech and hears... but not 100% hearing, that child is going to be scarred for the rest of their life ALL BECAUSE THEY WERE FORCED TO BE SOMEONE THEY ARE NOT. I am sure most hearing folks play a HUGE part in that category when it comes to ... hearing aids /CI and speech being forced on them all because hearing folks like you think being D/deaf is a pity and that they need a device to to able to hear "better" or communicate in the hearing world. HAVE YOU HEARD OF other means of communications? I am sure you are aware of pen and paper or text or asl. Speech and hearing aids are not the only options. They may help a little... But they will never FIT IN YOUR HEARING WORLD. Take this from someone who KNOWS!

There are many people who are happy with listening and spoken language, but I am sorry that you were scarred. You deserved access to language.

you still dont get it do you???? you actually think a D/deaf parent would go with this very idea to put their D/deaf child in a spoken language when they are D/deaf too? You are laughable!!!! I have known many deaf families who are against that very idea!!! They embrace their ASL culture and language big time!
BTW I was not the only one scarred! There are thousands if not millions who can attest to what I say about this matter. But as long it's not you or someone you know, you are OK. is all smiles from here. I know your kind.
You ain't fooling me, lol! :D

I have two Deaf families who have children in our listening and spoken language school. One has bilateral CIs.

Why would they place their child in our program if they weren't? One family uses ASL at home and spoken language at school and the other family knows ASL but chooses to use spoken language at school and home.

Of course, they will use asl at home when they are comfortable at their home, spoken language at the school? hmm... that sounds like to me that they wont use ASL because maybe... their school does not have ASL use. And if a family knows asl but use spoken language at school and home.... they are not D/deaf but hoh or hearing.
Like I said..... YOU AIN'T FOOLING ME! LOL!! I am done here.

They have the option of sending their child to the school right down the road that uses ASL. We have one that is housed inside a mainstream school.

My grandparents were profoundly deaf. They attended a school for the deaf in Fulton MO. Both graduated with excellent reading and writing skills. In the late 1800's they traveled from Missouri in a covered wagon and homesteaded in Oklahoma Territory. They raised 4 hearing children who became successful and productive people. One of which, my mother, born in 1903, graduated college with honors. She taught in schools for the deaf. I don't remember specifics. She died in 1940. Though only 3 1/2, I had learned the basics of ASL from my grandparents and my mother. Their lives were remarkable. My stepmother was a Speech and Hearing professor at a noted Texas university. I well know the progression of teaching communication skills to deaf children. At one time it was *only* speech and lip reading. In time, educators realized their mistake and began to combine speech and lip reading with signs and finger spelling. Now, many years after my experience with ASL, my abilities have greatly diminished. Even with hearing aids I'm growing ever more limited and would very much like re-learn ASL. I've looked at sites and think Bill Vicars seems to be the most familiar. I find I'm recognizing many there. Back to my grandparents and my mother and her siblings - there's a story there, you may be sure! I'm a great grandmother x 4 now. Our younger generations are aware of their heritage, but I'm adding to it now. To those of you are learning, please do what is comfortable for you. Don't be intimidated by others. And if anyone here knows helpful sites other than Vicars please let me know. Although I do like that one. Also, if you'd like more information about ASL history from the 1800's well into the 1900's, maybe I can help.

Well what is so wrong with giving a COMPREHENSIVE approach with both speech and Sign so there's no bias?!?! Easy, simple. Be childcentered and offer EVERYTHING!

Do you not understand the hard in the hard of hearing?!?!? Are you just parroting the AG Bell line? Speech only will only ever offer PARTIAL access to the hearing world. People like you take the "I'm glad I can talk and hear" line and IGNORE or brush under the rug the social emoitional and fitting in/identity issues b/c you are so fixtated on a Chicken Soup for the Cute Wittle Deaf Kid's Soul mentality. Even the Clarke School Mainstream Conference focuses quite a bit on the severe social emoitional issues mainstreamed and oral kids STRUGGLE with!

Your advice is to ignore what the adults tell me and what they advocate for because one woman on the internet told me to?

What is your obsession with thinking that teachers teach because they think young children are cute? I teach because I am passionate about using research-based best practices to help students achieve age-appropriate speech, language, audition, cognitive, social-emotional and academic skills. It has nothing to do with young children being cute. Your attitude disrespects the entire profession of teaching. We are highly qualified professionals and you have no idea how much work, research and time goes into each lesson we teach. I spend hours planning, reflecting, researching and analyzing data and not one minute is spent on thinking about how adorable my students are (but you are right, they absolutely are and I love them, those with hearing loss and those without).

I don't know how many more times I can say this; it is not my choice. Your beef is with parents.

The 'adults?" Which ones? The ones who promote inspiration porn to manipulate the feelings of vulnarable parents into chosing an approach simply b/c it's presented as "more normal?" You cannot even RECONIZE the bias b/c you're so devoted to a particular approach!

The adults who teach in listening and spoken language schools. The adults with children in my program. The adults who become audiologists and choose to advocate for listening and spoken language. The adults who speak at Hands and Voices and A.G. Bell and at E.H.D.I. Those adults.

Have you watched the documentary film, "The Listening Project"?
