Five charged in attack on pregnant teen on Metro bus last month

phone won't work in subway

True enough, but these people were on the Seattle public bus. I never have my phone out like that....maybe it's cause 1. I have been mugged for my phone before (& my skirt....but that is another story LOL) & 2. I am a NYer LOL

just saw the video. what a bunch of animals

one of several reasons why I ride/drive to work.

The video has audio & at 00:32 into one of the 'girls' says "Hey, she stole my phone." very calmly to another girl. When the one with the multiple hoods gets on and take the phone the first girl says while laughing "You did say you were getting me an iphone."

Un-fucking-believable! I've rode transit buses in several cities before but I've never come across anything like this.

If ya don't want to have ya stuff stolen. Then don't flash it about. I am IN NO WAY saying that she deserved to have her iphone stolen or beaten up. but DAMN. People will take what they think they can get away with.

yea but in this case - she wasn't flashing it. she was just minding her own business, listening to music, and sitting with her bf. The black girl came up and saw it... took it and quickly gave it to her friend who was sitting at opposite side of white girl. and then the group put on lame victim/"buddy" show.

more detail about this animal attack
Jessica M. Redmon-Beckstead, 17, and her boyfriend, Jason Decoste, were riding Metro bus #358 during the evening rush hour.

The video shows five female suspects board the bus, and one of the teens takes an MP3 player from Redmon-Beckstead. When she approaches them to get it back, several of the teens attack her and her boyfriend.

Several punches and kicks were thrown, and Redmon-Beckstead was cut on the eye. She was not hit in the stomach and her baby was not injured. Decoste suffered bruises.

Police say during the attack, three of the suspects stole items from the boyfriend's pockets.

Passengers yelled to the bus driver to pull over, which he finally did.
"Frankly, I think people were just so shocked that it took them a while to process what was happening," said King County Sheriff Sue Rahr.

Rahr urged anyone who sees a disturbance on a bus to call 911 immediately.
The bus driver pulled over and alerted police. Officers arrested three of the girls within 30 minutes of the attack, and the remaining two suspects a few days later. Police say the girls have records with law enforcement.

Four of the girls were charged with second degree robbery. The oldest girl, Ayana Sharee Cain, 19, was charged with second degree assault.

"I was shocked at how vicious it was and how unprovoked it was," said Sheriff Rahr. "I don't think there's a single person who didn't register some level of shock because it was so vicious and it was so completely unnecessary."

Several passengers who regularly ride #358 told KING 5 News the beating doesn't surprise them, and they've seen it before.

"I was attacked on this route one time by a bunch of young kids," one person told KING 5 News.

An additional 250 cameras are being added to Metro's bus fleet. Police patrols are also being increased on route #358.

All the suspects had their school-issued bus passes taken away, and are banned from riding a Metro bus for one year.

ok when I saw the vid it looks like the mp3/iphone is in her hand between her and her bf. The girl with the yellow bag is the one on the vid audio saying that the victim 'stole her phone' in the beginning of the clip. Yeah I saw the exchange too. All 5 girls were together cause they are all laughing and joking together at the same time they are mugging the pregnant woman.

Wow. The other passengers should had gotten up and beat the crap out of these girls.

Ya right..I would have, but that is because I have been mugged before. I wouldn't want anyone to go through what I did. But most unfortunately won't do anything. I remember learning something like this in one of my psych classes. Where everyone is thinking "Isn't someone going to do something? Maybe I should do something." And nothing is done until it's over.

I doubt that would bode well with the public.

Grown-up men beating up teen girls... feels bad, man.

Still, no one should have to put up with that. I wouldn't hit a girl, but dude, it it was my wife they were trying to beat up, don't expect me to stand by and do nothing about it. Not to mention that the teenage girl was pregnant too as well. That's just not cool with me.

yea i know. the best you can do is restrain her but imagine you're beating up a teen girl in a crowded place. it's almost a guarantee that you'll get beat up by a mob. it's a lose-lose situation.

O___O I wonder what the hell drives someone to be so...savage :S What's always best is to give them a dosage of their own medicine...

I admire the guy's restraint, but he is pretty lucky one of those little thugs didn't slip a knife between his ribs.

I definitely agree that the other passengers should have stepped in and defended, especially if they heard the female victim say she was pregnant.

yea especially that big black guy on the left side. he should have stepped up like a real man and block them.

but no.... he cowered there like a wimp.

I've seen like this in DC, NYC, and Chicago. Nothing is new. It is happening everywhere, so best thing to put valuable things at home. Put your cellphone in your bra/underwear for men.

Why didn't bus driver call police right after he heard the chaos in the back of the bus? Here in SF, there was two people arguing, bus driver kept driving and at same time he called police to meet the bus at next station. Police is right there, problem solved.

i saw news on tv its so pathetic!! No laugh matter but almost lose one of teenager's baby..

i read article says teenager had history crime and lots of mores but i think teenager should get in jail ASAP if robbery,break-in,whatevers types what got they can reports to police ASAP than sorry!!

some teenager got banned from bus for one years for revoked of tickets must obey bus driver to says if near expire ticket can get another ticket than revoked..But you can't complain!! OR fines!!

mostly teenager have history during store stealing and got alarm and teenager says sh*t but mall security or police can arrest ASAP and can grounded for 6 weeks what parents says no fun weekend with friends till grounded over if teenager says parents out of town that bullsh*t story i wouldnt buy this story!! IF parents at home all times teenager must home till 10pm or 11pm no late night if use drugs or whatevers police can arrest ASAP!!
